What was Sousa Mendes' Punishment ?

Sousa Mendes punishment was a penalty of one year of inactivity with the right to one half of his rank's pay, being obliged subsequently to be retired. However he ended up never being force to retire and received a full salary until the his death in 1954.

The fact is that Sousa Mendes always lived spending more money than he could and after he married his french mistress, Andrée Cibial's her spending habits aggravated the situation.

It has also been said in some newspapers that Sousa Mendes was not allowed to practice law, because he was blacklisted, but that is not true. Records of the The Portuguese Bar Association (or Portuguese Lawyer's Bar) show that Mendes applied twice to the Bar and he was admitted both times. In fact Mendes acted as lawyer in a case against the Portuguese state and he won it.

Sousa Mendes was listed in the Portuguese Consular and Diplomatic Yearbook until 1954.[1][2] After the one year punishment with half-pay, he received a monthly payment of 1,593 Portuguese escudos per month.[3][4][5] According to Rui Afonso, "although it was not a salary of a prince, one should not forget that at that time, in Portugal, the monthly salary of a school teacher was only 500 Escudos".[3] When he died, in 1954 he was receiving a monthly salary of 2,300 escudos.[3][6]

Sousa Mendes ended up being abandoned by his brothers and by his children because they never accepted that while at Bordeaux he got into an extramarital affair with french singer Andrée Cibial, that he got her pregnant, and that after his wife's death in 1948 Mendes ended up marrying Andrée Cibial. Andrée was a spender and soon clashed with Mendes' familly. (See Rui Afonso's biography on this. It is cristal clear)

If Sousa Mendes died loaded with debts it was not because he was punished it was because he was a spender.J Pratas (talk) 15:22, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Pushing A Point of View

I'd note that the description of Aristides de Sousa Mendes on the User Talk Page of JPratas suggests a rather less than neutral viewpoint might have been introduced in his editing of the piece. "A man who his credited for saving thousands of lives but whose worshipers, carried away by the ides of writing an hagiography, twisted his life story denigrating other people."Irish Melkite (talk) 08:37, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Children

The list of children in the infobox fails to include Marie-Rose Faure, his daughter with Cibial. I've added her name. Irish Melkite (talk) 08:44, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
