Intro

[edit]

He was one of the greatest players of spin bowling, but was less at home against express pace.

I added this line a long time back and it now has made it to the intro. The first half of the line came from Robertson-Glasgow's article on Bradman in Wisden 1949, but am feeling a little uneasy about the 'less at home against express pace' part. I can't remember where I got that from - possibly it was based on the troubles that he had with Larwood in 1928-29. It would be better if we could get a proper citation, or modify it to something that we are certain about. Tintin (talk) 14:25, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am deleting that second half. It may also be better to pull this line to the middle of the text rather than leave it in the intro. Tintin (talk) 03:22, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed; it shouldn't have found its way into the intro - sorry! However, the assertion is certainly warranted: his Cricinfo profile says Against high pace he was less secure, and when facing left-armers like Voce and Quinn, the South African, he at times showed a tendency to move too far across his wicket.. --RobertGtalk 08:41, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for finding a citation. I don't feel guilty now :-) Tintin (talk) 08:47, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"mainly due to Tate's posthumous swing" what does this mean? I could guess, but thats not the point of an encyclopaedia Johnnybriggs (talk) 08:41, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aha ! I am changing it to "late", guessing that it is what the writer meant. Tintin 08:53, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Despite being heavily built, Ponsford was quick on his feet" sounds a little like a casual remark that a commentator might make, it really makes an assumption that heavily built people (whatever that means) are slow on their feet. There is another reference to this in the "Style and personality" section. Ponsford was a thickset man, weighing in at around 13 stone (83 kg) during his playing career. Despite this, he was known for his quick footwork, we again are given the impression that despite his frame he succeeded.

Otherwise it is an extremely comprehensive article.
