Assertion that inhaling/eating feces causes boar taint unsupported

[edit]

There is a statement in this article "When pigs are raised on pasture in a rotational grazing system, similar to cattle, goats and sheep, the skatole based taint does not occur because the pigs are on fresh ground and not inhaling and eating their own feces 3"

The citation (Footnote 3) links to a web page for Sugar Mountain Farms. The page speaks to personal correspondence with a researcher (Douglas L Greger) on the causes of boar taint but doesn't indicate that it's caused by 'inhaling and eating their own feces'. That cause is suggested by someone in the comments section.

It seems this is an unsupported assertion. I have no doubt that conditions in a commercial pig farm are terrible but could find no evidence that research by Douglas L Greger indicates that it is due to the conditions in a commercial facility. In fact, Dr. Greger's research indicates the cause is genetic [1] and he has received a patent [2] for a substance to feed the pigs that will reduce boar taint.
