Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on May 2, 2016.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that Catatonia had intended to include an anti-Warner Bros. Records song on their triple-platinum selling album International Velvet?

Just extracted this from the article, needs fixing, but I am not sure how kylet 10:30, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ignore that, seems to be working fine now, I put it back. Appeared as the code with if statements and all sorts of gubbins. How odd. kylet 10:33, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:EqualCurse.jpg

[edit]

Image:EqualCurse.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:17, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Collaborations

[edit]
  • "The Ballad of Tom Jones" - Space with Cerys of Catatonia - 1998 - #4
  • "Baby, It's Cold Outside" - Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews - 1999 - #17
  • "Cyclops Rock" - They Might Be Giants featuring Cerys Matthews - featured on the album 'Mink Car' 2001 (album track)

This section (moved from the article) seems to be more about Cerys Matthews than the band. --Northernhenge (talk) 22:20, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

POV

[edit]

The article currently contains the following, clearly biased comments: Catatonia deliberately tried to make their songs accessible to a broad audience, while at the same time not shying away from original, experimental, or even potentially abrasive sounds. The result was a mix of hooky pop and underground indie rock. Their songs are characterized by clever lyrics and Matthews' enticing, raspy, prominently Welsh accented vocals, which made her something of a sex symbol.

I suggest this needs either referencing or removing.

Dead from the waist down

A reference to A Grammarian's Funeral by Robert Browning?

Properly based Oun
Gave us the doctrine of the enclitic De,
Dead from the waist down." [1]

Lede
  • " The band formed in 1992 after Mark Roberts met Cerys Matthews; the duo went on to have a relationship during the band's initial work, breaking up as they worked on their second studio album. " -seems a bit trivial for the lede. I'd trim it.
  • "The first major lineup featured Dafydd Ieuan on drums, Clancy Pegg on keyboard, Owen Powell on guitar and Paul Jones on bass. This line-up recorded two EPs, For Tinkerbell and Hooked." -you can avoid repeating "this line-up" and replace with "They"
  • "This new line-up remained for the rest of the lifetime of the band. The single "You've Got a Lot to Answer For" received radio airplay and became the band's first top 40 single in the UK Singles Chart." -when?
  • "Their breakout success came with the International Velvet album and the release of the single "Mulder and Scully". The album went to number one in the album chart, and sold more than 900,000 copies being certified triple platinum by British Phonographic Industry, while the single reached number 3 in the singles chart, the highest any Catatonia single would chart." -again dates would be good
  • "The follow-up release, "Road Rage", reached number 5, and was nominated for best song at the Brit Awards and the Ivor Novello Awards, winning at the Q Awards. The titular track from the album International Velvet received additional attention, and the band performed it at the opening of the opening ceremony of the 1999 Rugby World Cup in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. While in Catatonia, Matthews collaborated with Space on "The Ballad of Tom Jones" and with Tom Jones on a cover of "Baby, It's Cold Outside". Their final top ten single came with "Dead from the Waist Down" off the following album, Equally Cursed and Blessed. " -and again
  • "The tour to support Paper Scissors Stone was cancelled, and shortly after the band dismissed the break-up rumours. However, a month later, the band announced that they were breaking up." -superfluous, try "The tour to support Paper Scissors Stone was cancelled, and a month later, the band announced that they were breaking up".
  • "the supergroup The Stand " -what makes them a "supergroup"?
  • " The writing duties were shared across the band, and dismissed the label of an indie band, with Powell saying they had only ever sought to write pop music." -doesn't make sense,. New sentence "They disagreed with being labelled an indie band.."
History
  • "They hit it off", encyclopedic?
The Crai
  • On wiki I believe we don't add the "th" on 19th and 20th Februsry
  • Link " Cnapan Festival"?
  • Added a redlink for now - I double checked and the modern title is Cnapan Music Festival. Although in doing so I found out that Cnapan is a type of medieval Welsh football, which I didn't know before. Miyagawa (talk) 14:05, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Equally cursed
  • "In April, they played their largest Welsh based gigs outdoors at the Llangollen International Pavilion in front of 6,000 people on two successive days. This was a warm up to their largest concert so far, held at Margam Country Park near Port Talbot. " -confusing, which was their largest concert? Can you reword for clarity?
  • "Catatonia supported R.E.M. on two European dates around the same time as the single "Londinium" was released; t" -when was this?

This is a considerable effort overall, really informative, though I do think the prose needs some work to avoid sounding like a magazine in places. It's good enough for GA, but might benefit from a further vigorous copyedit. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:25, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for reviewing. This was one of those articles I'd always intended to get around to working on but if it wasn't for Awaken the Dragon, I have no idea when that might have happened. Miyagawa (talk) 14:05, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Post-Britpop

[edit]

I strongly believe Catatonia are part of the post-Britpop era and not the Britpop era. Britpop came to an end in 1997. Catatonia came to prominence in 1998, when Britpop died, and post-Britpop began, much like with Embrace. Therefore, they should be listed as a post-Britpop act, and not a Britpop act. Dean12065 (talk) 18:43, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The only thing that really matters is whether or not your addition of post-britpop is reliably sourced. Robvanvee 18:56, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hence my reverting several of your other edits! Robvanvee 19:14, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
