GA review comments

[edit]
  • bowling left arm orthodox spin in addition to his batting." - can't pin-point but something is amiss in the statement. Also, would be good if you could clarify the batting as lower-order batting during his debut
  • "regarded as one of the finest stylists in cricket history." - sentence needs copyedits and this phrase require reference
    • Trumper comment is referenced when it is expanded upon in the main text and it isn't necesary to re-reference everything in the lead.Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:45, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • agreed. I thought of striking the comment off but forgot.
  • "finest batmsman in cricket history" - spell correction for batsman
  • "concealed faser ball" - spell correction for faster
  • "17 five wicket innings hauls in his career" - FC career or test career? that needs to be cleared
  • Major comment: The article does not provide details on his post-cricketing career. Needs to be added.<br>Kalyan 12:55, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found the later years stuff. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:52, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Revised GA comments

[edit]
  • When i look at other cricket articles, playing style comes after the cricket career section. I am not aware if that is a rule (style after career), but if it is, please changes else ignore this comment.
  • Lots of small paras in the career section. i think they can be combined to make larger paragraphs
  • "in December 1921, and thereafter described himself as a civil servant. " - but he played cricket till mid/late 1930s. the reference to civil servant needs clarification
  • "Childless, he was predeceased by his wife," - when? what was her ailment?
    • Unfortunately, this comes from the ADB link. The ADB was based on some cricket books (from when he was playing) and one source which was a newspaper obituary. So I presume the family stuff about his wife would have come after the cricket books and would have come in the obituary. Since the obit would be about 1 page long, I don't think it could give more detailed information about his wife dying specifically. The ADB also did not seem to use a biography, so there likely wasn't one, so I don't think I could get any more family info easily. 05:11, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
  • the lead section should have atleast a line on his post-playing career
  • Images - are there no images of Charles Macartney? I don't think the lack of images will stop it from GA but i am guessing since it is a long time back, we can lay our hands on some snaps.

Fair enough. But let's keep the review comments open so that others can come in and add these to the article to improve it. Moving the article to GA. Kalyan 17:30, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Review

[edit]

Unrelated to GA. I don't have any problems with the GA status. Tintin 15:29, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • He selected the heaviest bat from the batch that his teammates brought out and then stated “Now I’m going to have a hit”

Need to cross-check. The version that I am familiar with is the one told later in the article, where this quote is associated with the 345.

I just left in ambiguously as a century....since it is not clear. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • On sticky wickets, he was often incisive, taking 17 five wicket innings hauls in his career.

This implies that many or most of the 17 were taken on stickies. Unless the sources mention this, they should not be associated

Yes, I've detached it a little. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Trumper was regarded as the “crown prince of the golden age of cricket”, the finest and most stylish batsman of his era, and etc

The same things about Trumper have been repeated twice or thrice.

Well, I removed them so that it is in the lead as necessary and expanded in the style paragraph about their relationship. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • In the same season, he made his first class debut against Queensland, making 56 in the first innings and taking three wickets in the second.

The 'same season' is out of context and is preceded by something else.

Done, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • amassing 7648 runs at 547.
Obvious typo! Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • but Wisden regarded the 99 in a drawn match Test at Lord's to be his finest of the tour.[2]

I read somewhere that he was out trying hit Frank Foster into the St. John's Wood Road. If you could find a citation, that would be a good example of his batting style.

I need to run to the library. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Macartney retired from Tests after the tour.
  • Just make sure that he did not play any further Test also means that he "retired" (and that he was not dropped despite being available).
  • Neville Cardus wrote that “there was always chivalry in his cricket, a prancing sort of heroism. The dauntlessness of his play, the brave beauty and the original skill bring tears to my eyes yet.”

A bit out of context in the place where it is used.

  • In 1935-36 Macartney was the vice-captain of Frank Tarrant’s side

Tarrant organized it but the Ryder was the captain. Tintin 15:29, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changed accordingly. Thankyou Tintin! Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tidier

[edit]

Just tidied it up a little: Changed "On the occasions when he fell attempted further long hits" to: "On the occasions when he fell attempting further long hits" Also: "his well concealed faster ball which often guard batsmen off guard" to: "his well concealed faster ball which often caught batsmen off guard" Regards, Baxter de Wahl

Importance

[edit]

I'm surprised that no-one has commented on the WP Cricket importance rating. A rating of "low" seems ridiculous to me. If the article were truly of low importance, there would have been little point in expending so much effort to raise it to GA status. I think it should be "high", and am about to amend it accordingly. JH (talk page) 20:51, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

That rating was nowt to do with me. He is definitely a high. I suspect he was low because he played more than 18 years ago. I have an issue about the name. Why Charles when he was universally called Charlie? Unless someone proves otherwise I am changing that. --BlackJack | talk page 21:07, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have done it anyway. All verifiable sources in my possession are clear that he was always known as Charlie. The Don himself called him Charlie. --BlackJack | talk page 09:04, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dweller's comments

[edit]
  • Lead could be 2-3 parags
  • Style section has a gigantic opening parag
  • Pre-war section seems to beg a Post-war corrolary
  • Graph seems more logically placed in the performance section
  • "take 17 five wicket innings" know what you mean, but English isn't right. Try "take five wickets in an innings on 17 occasions" or "take 17 five wicket hauls".
  • amusing sentence "At this stage in his career, he was known for his copybook technique and defensive style, something he was to reverse during his long career" I'm sure he didn't reverse his style, unless he started batting left handed
  • not essential, but the illustration is sparse. We have some pix of some of his contemporaries and views of some grounds when he was playing, etc.
  • I've added a couple of CN tags. They're probably already cited, but please clarify, if necessary using multiple citings for ease of use.
  • The maths in the table is incorrect.

Hope that's useful. --Dweller 13:03, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What kind of hat is that?

[edit]

I'm not sure if this is cool or not, because it doesn't technically pertain to the article, but what kind of hat is Macartney wearing in the pictures? It looks a little different from a poorboy/newsboy. Like, the top part isn't ruffled or anything, but rather very simple. I like it. I also really like the design on the front. If anyone has any information on that hat or others like it, please respond to this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.44.116.20 (talk) 02:44, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's a Baggy green, the Australia national team's version of the cricket cap and spoken of in revered terms by antipodeans. --Dweller (talk) 07:21, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answering! I didn't think anyone would even know, let alone answer! Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.44.122.242 (talk) 02:03, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
