This article needs pictures. I could provide one, but I don't know how to convert my files to a format accepted by Wikipedia. ReverendG 02:23, 1 July 2006 (UTC) uhh...nevermind. ReverendG 04:57, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

added a link to a picture of a rastafarian colored chillum, you say you need more pictures so there is one!

I think that it would also be useful to name the various parts and exactly how to use one. I am going to put in the that the stone is called a gitthuck and the cloth a saath.

Required etiquette

[edit]

"The required etiquette can become quite complex and the average Westerner has little or no chance of meeting the ritual standards of a sadhu." Is this statement not a bit pointed? Wouldn't it be just as effective to say something like "The required etiquette for the sadhu ritual is quite complex." Also, this statement seems to belong more at the beginning of the paragraph.

"Conical"?-- and other health issues

[edit]

Perhaps the descriptive term "conical" (at the beginning of the article) refers to the outer shape of the chillum, but it leaves open a question whether the crater (bowl) is conical too. Cylindrical is arguably better from a health standpoint, because if the crater is cylindrical, a pre-shaped metal screen can be nested snugly in it permitting the use of sifted (even-particle-size) herb which, if the user sucks slowly, burns at a lower temperature, protecting the THC or other valued herbal ingredient while reducing smoking-related health issues.

Hot burning overdose illustration in article as of July, 2009

[edit]

The illustration presently in the article shows a chillum with a crater easily 1/2-inch = 12-mm. in diameter. Readers should be informed that a narrower crater diameter (such as 1/4"=6-mm.) makes it easier to use any herb (cannabis, tobacco or other) more safely and less wastefully due to a lower burning temperature. Attaching a long (20"/50cm.) drawtube to the exit end of the chillum allows safer lighting, a better view of how combustion is going, and additional distance for smoke to travel, cooling down, before reaching the user's trachea. User should have ready a one-liter paper or plastic sack (Breath-moisture-bonnet) to breathe in and out of several times immediately after each single serving.

Proposed technical illustration

[edit]

Technical improvements in chillum manufacturing, or the conversion of existing chillums to a small-caliber crater format, can arguably protect health in connection with herbal use without disguising the original traditional shape of the device.
