While Worldman's Engineering Alloys[1] does list Chromel-R as a 80/20 Ni/Cr alloy, there are multiple other sources [2][3][4] that list Chromel-R as a more complex composition. There appears to be some variation in how the various alloys are described (Chromel-A appears to have small amounts (1% or less) of Si and Fe in detailed composition information, and in Worldman's[1], but not in most descriptions) but most source show Chromel-R to have large differences from 80/20, usually including Aluminium (>2%) and Copper (>2%). Unfortunately not all sources agree. I've seen both 75% Nickel (Ni), 18-20% Chromium (Cr), 2.5% Aluminium (Al), 2.2% Manganese(Mn), 1.7% Copper (Cu), and 0.60% Silicon (Si)[3] and 75% Ni, 20% Cr, 2.5% Al, 2.5% Cu [2][4].

From this, I think Worldman's[1] is either wrong or oversimplifying the composition of Chromel-R and the correct composition should probably be stated something like this:

Chromel-R has a composition of Ni 75%, Cr 18-20%, Al 2.5%, Cu 1.7-2.0%, and Mn 0.0-2.5%

This disregards the trace amount of Si from the one source but shows that there is some variation in composition. Thoughts? Ryojin314159 (talk) 16:41, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistency

[edit]

First paragraph mentions 90 percent nickel composition. Subsequent paragraphs only mention 80 or 60 composition.
