This appears to be the consensus from the discussions below.  — Amakuru (talk) 20:12, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

– Both of these players had a WP:COMMONNAME of "Ed Gallagher," both played American football, and both were Tackles. I can see three different ways to disambiguate these guys, so I'd like more input as to which one is "best." 1. Using year of birth to distinguish (which I dislike since no one would know their birthyear, but it's probably the cleanest). 2. One of the Ed Gallaghers seems to be more notable for his off the field work, so we could use author/motivational speaker/activist as his disambiguator and hatnote to the other one, who would use "American football" since he is soley known as a football player. 3. One of them was both an offensive tackle and defensive tackle, while the other one was solely an offensive tackle. We could use that difference to distinguish (eg: offensive lineman or offensive tackle vs. tackle). Thoughts? -- Tavix (talk) 16:18, 28 July 2016 (UTC) --Relisting for lack of participation — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 02:22, 11 August 2016 (UTC) --Relisting because there's nearly a consensus, but it's not quite there yet. • Disambiguate by year of birth. It's the least ambiguous of the above suggestions, particuarly as the two men are separated by about 50 years or so. PC78 (talk) 17:57, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose for now. Edward B. Gallagher is not known as Ed Gallagher and no source has been provided to establish that. (comment stricken by CookieMonster755 due to falsified statements against this move request) Right now, it is at natural disambiguation and the American footballer is at Ed Gallagher (American football) because there are other people who go by Ed Gallagher. If you are afraid that these two people will be confused, a hatnote should solve the problem. Ḉɱ̍ 2nd anniv. 17:41, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@CookieMonster755: Did you even look at the sources? All of them call him Ed Gallagher so your statement doesn't match the facts. Here they are for you in case you haven't actually looked yet: [2] [3] [4]. -- Tavix (talk) 17:47, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Tavix:, thanks for the links. However, my position still stands. Let's be WP:NATURAL and add a hatnote. Ḉɱ̍ 2nd anniv. 17:49, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@CookieMonster755: At the very least, you should strike your false statement: Edward B. Gallagher is not known as Ed Gallagher and no source has been provided to establish that is not true. -- Tavix (talk) 17:50, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Tavix:  Done Ḉɱ̍ 2nd anniv. 17:53, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@CookieMonster755: WP:NATURAL doesn't follow your argument here. It says: Using an alternative name that the subject is also commonly called in English reliable sources, albeit not as commonly as the preferred-but-ambiguous title. So for us to use this name, we would still need evidence that he is commonly called "Edward B. Gallagher" in sources. Could you provide evidence of this for me? -- Tavix (talk) 17:55, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Neutral see [5] & [6]. Ḉɱ̍ 2nd anniv. 17:58, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Both of those links are known mirrors of the article here. Kuru (talk) 18:46, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support my above suggestion to move the former to Edwin B. Gallagher and keep the other as-is, because I think this is the cleanest solution, otherwise disambiguate by year of birth as this is the least confusing of the proposed disambiguators. PC78 (talk) 10:51, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be fine with year of birth. -- Tavix (talk) 22:27, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate both by year of birth which is the standard Wikipedia practice in such cases. They were born 55 years apart, thus eliminating any confusion as to their era of notability. It is rare that a sports figure would be known to the public or referenced in sports pages by such ceremonious forms as "Edward B." or "Edwin B." All three sports reference sites appended to Edward B.'s entry (NFL.com, Pro-Football-Reference and Databasefootball.com) confirm that the commonly used form of his name was "Ed". Likewise for sports references concerning Edwin B. —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 17:31, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
