Wikiproject Prisons

[edit]

If anyone's interested, I've proposed a new wikiproject for the creation of articles regarding specific prisons here. --Cdogsimmons (talk) 01:53, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plumstead

[edit]

I had added Plumstead railway station purely because Thamesmead is a big place and this is the nearest station.Eugene-elgato (talk) 21:15, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the addition, but wikipedia is not a directory, and shouldn't give 'directions' to the locations of places. This article is well linked to the Prison's website which does give directions. None of the London or UK prison articles give specific directions. Bleaney (talk) 22:22, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, yeah I agree now.Eugene-elgato (talk) 23:57, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

– ... and all other prison articles in the UK. Prisons in the UK are commonly referred to as "HMP XXX" and not "HM Prison XXX". See these BBC articles, for example: 1, 2 and 3. As far as I can tell, there is very little / no use of the "HM Prison XXX" format outside Wikipedia. ElshadK (talk) 18:47, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Rather to my surprise, the photographs I found of prison nameboards use "H.M. Prison ..."[1][2] and Ordnance Survey maps use "HM Prison ...".[3] So I think the present naming is fine. In fact it seems that, for example, "Belmarsh Prison" is more common in general writing if Ngrams is to be believed[4] and this is waht the Department of Justice uses.[5] However, I wouldn't bother changing to this either since it would be an unnecessary disturbance. Anyway "Prison" scores highly in recognisability. Thincat (talk) 10:29, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Fine as it is. While HMP is commonly used, so is HM Prison, and that's less confusing for those not in the know. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:55, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
