Holländer/Dutchman

[edit]

I think the role in English articles should be "Dutchman". The opera's article uses the English name. Jmar67 (talk) 09:04, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The title of the opera uses the English name. The article about Richard Wagner correctly uses the German name. We can do the same, as opera houses around the world do, recent example. (I heard it on radio.) Perhaps the opera would have a chance to be moved now, but I'm still licking my wounds from the last time I tried. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:18, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Even so, the descriptive role should be in English. Readers may not know what Holländer means. Or use Holländer in italics. Jmar67 (talk) 09:32, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For me, its a name like Duke Almaviva which I'd also not put in italics. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:55, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"Duke Almaviva" is English. "Holländer" isn't. Use English when you can. Jmar67 (talk) 19:04, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps I should have used "Pizarro" as a better example. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:06, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's a name (proper noun). Holländer is not. Jmar67 (talk) 19:11, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The title role in Der fliegende Holländer is the Holländer, but I give up. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:22, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I feel supported in this English book, which I met searching for a different singer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:26, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sang a role

[edit]

Don't agree with avoiding this just because singer may also have speaking lines or engage in acting. That's part of the opera. Jmar67 (talk) 09:24, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I use "appeared as" first, "performed the role of" second, only once that is established, "sang" also, to avoid repetition. But in the lead, it's a first. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:58, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"sang" was used to avoid repetition. It's better here. Jmar67 (talk) 18:59, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I tried it differently. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:23, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This, and the above, seems like a non productive, haggling over crumbs, thread to me. Ceoil (talk) 01:51, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not to me, always learning, - but really allergic to that Dutchman, and so happy that the author of Richard Wagner understood (and also for Rossini and his so-called Barber). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:23, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
