Hereditary Princes of Monaco after 1949 (Rainier III accession)

[edit]
  • from 1949 to 1957 we are under the old pre-2002 rules so only the direct descendants of the reigning prince can inherit the throne. During this period, Rainier has no child, so there is no legitimate Hereditary Prince... If Rainier had died during this period, the Crown Council would have had to select a new reigning prince(ss)... logical choice would have been either Princess Antoinette or Princess Charlotte, you can only speculate about what would have happened.
  • 1957: birth of Caroline, only child, she is the Hereditary Princess of Monaco
  • 1958: birth of Albert, he is younger, but male and therefore becomes Hereditary Prince instead of his sister
  • 2005: Accession of Albert, Caroline is again, for the second time, Hereditary Princess of Monaco

If Caroline is now Hereditary Princess and heiress presumptive, why was Antoinette not Hereditary Princess and heiress presumptive between 1949 and 1957 ? 86.42.27.135 18:46, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Because the succession rules have changed in 2002. Before 2002 only direct descendants of the Prince could be heir. Not brothers or sisters. Hektor 08:27, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
