Eliminated sentence

[edit]

This sentence was in the article for weeks with a {{fact}} tag:

(Brian Lowe of Alameda also struck out Mauer in a high school all-star game){{citation needed}}.

I've taken this out, but kept it here in case someone can provide a reference. I doubt this is true, but if it is, let's get a source. --Akhilleus (talk) 03:42, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Who exactly accused Joe of using steroids? Do you have any evidence of this? Anyone other then a kid who knew a kid who's cousin once shook his hand and it hurt? Find some facts for this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.161.16.87 (talk) 04:37, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it.--E tac (talk) 18:45, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've never in my life, as a long-time Twins fan, ever heard of Mauer referred to by anyone as "The Gentelman."

Would someone please go to this website *[1] and upload the picture onto wikipedia? The reason is because the administrators don't want me uploading any more pictures unless I made them myself.--MP123 05:15, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review 4/3

[edit]

I’ve currently failed the article on the account that it has some major issues with at least two of Wikipedia’s Guidelines for GA-Status articles.

  • Well Written – Fail – First, the article’s lead should be merged together, as opposed to having one statement, explaining who he is, and then a background information. The high school career section is well written (with the exception of the last sentence of the first paragraph), but contains some patches of crude wording, ex:
Born ….., Mauer was a three-sport athlete, baseball, football, and basketball, for St. Paul's Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders. He was even good enough to make it into a Sports Illustrated issue as a "Face In The Crowd". – Consider reworking those two sentences, to say “he played baseball, football, and basketball for x school. His earlier career earned the attention of SI ect.

The professional career section should not be broken apart, consider merging the single sentence/ lines with the main body, ex ” Following his injury-shortened 2004….” or “After going 2-for-4 ….”. ect. Also consider integrating the Trivia section into the main body of the article. Very few GA/FA status articles have Trivia sections – also it will get rid of those redundant “Mauer this, or Mauer” that. Other than that, the article is very informative when it comes Mauer’s baseball life.

  • Factual Accuracy – Fail – While most of this article is well references, there are some parts that could use an additional references. Ex, the first three paragraphs of his professional career, and the last two sentences of the H/S career. Use the multi ref tags if needed. The 2006 season portion is almost bullet proof in terms of references. Not to be tedious, but make sure all the reference tags come directly after the period. Also, reference 19 should be like the others.
  • Broad – Fail - While the article goes into great detail about Mauer’s professional and early career, it lacks information about his personal life, or early life. Your Trivia section seems to have a good portion of information about that kind of thing – consider converting it into paragraphs and making it a personal life section. Consider expanding it if you can, perhaps add his personal interests, and any encyclopedic off-baseball activities.
  • NPOV – Pass – Neutral point of view for a majority of this article. If possible, consider adding some sourced criticism or praises from baseball critics. Though that’s not really needed though, it would make the article a little broader.
  • Stable – Pass – No signs of edit wars.
  • Images – Fail – The SI image lacks a fair use rationale and source information. Currently, Wikipedia’s Copyright Gurus have dubbed almost all SI covers as replaceable, unless they are extremely significant. Once that image is removed, the article should be solid in terms of images. Consider looking on Flickr for free fair use images.

Once you make these changes the article should be more than well-prepared for passing another GA review. If you have any questions, or need help please fell free to drop a message on my talk page. Once again, this article has a lot of potential; good work on the references. Good luck and thanks for the contribution --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  22:52, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The first sentence says he is a major catcher in major league baseball. That's a little redundant as well.Hsox05 16:15, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Minor League history

[edit]

I just copied the last line in "Minor league history (2001-2004)" and pasted it, but changed the year from 2004 to 2007. I also changed the headline for that section to (2001-2007), since Mauer played a little bit with the Red Wings again this year for rehab after his injury. 69.226.58.171 20:09, 13 June 2007 (UTC)Josh[reply]

I reverted back to the previous 2001-2004. This section is suppose to be a reflection of a majority of the time he played in the minor league system. If we start changing things like this, it will create a ton of work for other players that often get called back down and up throughout the season, as well as other players who get injured, such as Maudizzle. --Gephart 18:26, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Or better yet just remove the years from the header all together.--E tac 06:08, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That section is completely worthless. I couldn't find another good page with the same feature. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.224.166.159 (talk) 17:09, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia

[edit]

I tried to incorporate the trivia into the body of the article. Not sure if it is a adequate job so I left the banner up. 23:45, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Swing

[edit]

I edited the sentence about the quality of Mauer's swing. Crediting him with "one of the best swings possibly of alltime" is a bit subjective and hyperbolic for an encyclopedic article. Especially considering the source for that is Mauer's grandfather (what's next, his mother being credited for saying he smells really nice?). I did leave Molitor's quote in there as a compromise. Chancat74 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chancat74 (talkcontribs) 21:02, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

maybe he does smelln nice and his momma aont a lyin —Preceding unsigned comment added by E tac (talkcontribs) 05:42, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Broken reference

[edit]

Reference 7 is broken. Can someone fix it? I cannot see the links when I attempt to edit that section.

The link should be: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/01draft/2001-06-05-analysis.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by Royhandy (talkcontribs) 17:17, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I figured out how the reference was created and fixed the link. Royhandy 14:59, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Austrian descent

[edit]

The page lists Mauer as in the category "Austrian descent", but this is neither mentioned nor referenced in the text of the article. The article also does not say where he was born. --194.166.117.61 (talk) 20:38, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox position listing

[edit]

As per WP:RECENTISM, articles should adopt a historical perspective. Mauer was a catcher for the majority of his career. He also holds numerous career hitting records for catchers so, for that reason alone, he should be listed as a catcher in the Infobox.Orsoni (talk) 03:01, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
