John Francis' TED talk and UN Peace Ambassador

[edit]

John gave a TED talk. One of the better ones, imo. His attitude is something everyone might benefit from. A real everyman. http://www.ted.com/talks/john_francis_walks_the_earth Benvhoff (talk) 14:07, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

note on citations needed

[edit]

Many of the biographical claims about John Francis are made by him in his presentation in Monterey, California for Ted Talks. [1] The Guardian also has an interview with him. [2] And from his organization, planetwalk. According to http://planetwalk.org/about-john/ "he founded Planetwalk a non-profit environmental awareness organization" [3]

NPR also states planetwalk is his organization and provides redundant information [4]

I believe I have provided enough references/citations to prove the claims regarding his own life. I don't know about the details of the oil spill and whether or not that is all accurate. I noticed that currently the article states "On January 17, 1971, two oil tankers owned by Standard Oil Company, the Arizona Standard and Oregon Standard, collided in San Francisco Bay, creating an enormous oil spill of 840,000 gallons." but the wiki article on the oil spill says it happened on January 19th. It seems well cited. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_San_Francisco_Bay_oil_spill

I will check back on this in a while to see if there is consensus on the subject.

Work while silent

[edit]

The article says he got three degrees and gave classes while silent. How? Was it using some form of sign language? Did he present his thesis with text only? More details would be welcome. Mateussf (talk) 12:49, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

looking at the dates in the article, it says he ended his vow of silence in April 1990, and defended his Ph.D. thesis by phone in 1991.
So more accurately he got two degrees while silent, and apparently the third was completed afterwards.
It also says his teaching was remote. Since this was pre-internet, it's not clear how this was done-- presumably it's explained in his book (which I don't have a copy of.)

Birthdate?

[edit]

His vow of silence started on his birthday in 1973 but when he was born isn't listed. ColonialComputer (talk) 14:34, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
