Killer

Ragarding this edit summary [1], taking someones life does make you a killer. It does not necessarily make you a murderer, but it does make you a killer. SpinningSpark 14:48, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Having caused a death, and having intentionally taken the life are not the same. Lana has never intentionally taken a life. The only time she has so called "caused the death" of someone, it was by accident. Otherwise, Clark would theoretically be a killer, because he has accidentally caused the death of several individuals.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 15:36, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Lana Lang (Smallville)/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

  1. Is it reasonably well written?
    A. Prose quality:
    B. MoS compliance:
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. References to sources:
"this is only the sixth time the character has been adapted to a live action television series." - This is in the lead, but I don't believe that it's in the article (correct me if I'm wrong). It should be expanded upon, and explained why the creators choose to use the character
First, it was wrong. It should have been "four" and not "six". If it was "six" I wouldn't have even mentioned it. Second, it was more or less just a tack on fact for the Shuster/Seigel info. I'd like to expand on it, but I haven't been able to find much for it. That being said, it is on my to-do list but this page is supposed to reflect a "broad" coverage, and not a "comprehensive" coverage. <span style="background:Maroon;color:Gold">  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 22:01, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
    B. Citation of reliable sources where necessary:
I see several citation needed tags in there. In the past, I've failed pages because of that, but this should be easily fixable.
"Jade Unterman and Louise Grant portrayed the character as a child and an elderly woman, respectively." <- Needs citation
The episode is the source, they're credited. Seemed unnecessary to place said source there because it isn't really a challengable item. The others are those awards. I've been having trouble finding any source (other than IMDB) that will verify the nominations (as most people don't report on nominations, just wins).  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 21:28, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
    C. No original research:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
    B. Focused:
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
  6. Does it contain images to illustrate the topic?
    A. Images are copyright tagged, and non-free images have fair use rationales:
    B. Images are provided where possible and appropriate, with suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
One thing I'm noticing is that there is no timeframe for a lot of these events. As someone who only realized that Smallville was about Superman by reading this article, I think it would be beneficial if you cited more episodes in the text and gave (season #, year) citations like what is done in Homer Simpson
It's insinuated that the character has left the show, but it's never really expanded upon. Has the character left the show? Why? What was the actress' reaction?
I'd like to see a reception section added about the reaction to the character. -- Scorpion0422 21:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
As soon as I get a chance I'll go back in and identify events (that's one thing I forgot to do on all of those character articles).I have taken care of identifying episodes/seasons for all the events that need them. See here. I don't recall Kreuk doing a lot of interviews discussing why she left the show, but I'll check out. "Reception" on these characters is scarce. I'll try and move some info around, as I think this page suffers the same as the Clark Kent page did, and that was any "reception"-like info was placed in more relevant sections: Characterization, Portrayal, etc.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 21:28, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
My last college paper is due tomorrow, so I should be able to devote my time after that to cleaning up the issues that you saw.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 22:01, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
I have absolutely no expertise on this topic; I'm just glancing at the article after seeing it listed as a GAC. But is six (or four) times really a notably low number for a character being adapted for a live-action TV series? I'm just questioning the "only" in that sentence. Propaniac (talk) 21:44, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
I don't know if 4 is low, like I said, it was merely a tack-on fact. I put it there because the character has been around as long as Superman, but has only been adapted to TV 4 times (and I think two of those times it was only for a one-shot episode).  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 22:20, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
I've just gone ahead and removed it pending the addition of further context.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 20:55, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
I put in some sources for Jade and Louise. As for the awards, I'm still working on it. I found one site that listed all of the nominations, but it was blacklisted because someone spammed the general weblink awhile back. I'm in the process of trying to get this specific web address whitelisted for use.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 15:28, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
I added some refs for the awards, they're probably reliable enough. Also, BuddyTV has a list of all her awards, including a few that aren't on the page. Since the website has its own page, I'm guessing it should be allowed. Corn.u.co.pia / Disc.us.sion 00:51, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
That BuddyTV info you linked to is user edited. If you register with BuddyTV you get access to edit those sections. So, no, we cannot use them.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 00:59, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

I removed a bunch of stuff not relating to this GA review. If you two want to debate about the article, do it on the talk page, not here. Have my concerns been addressed? -- Scorpion0422 16:21, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for removing that (and I apologize for getting caught up in that needless debate). As for your concerns, for the most part. I say that because, the "Reception" section isn't complete (what ever is), but it was started. We moved the awards down to that section, and we've got one review of Kreuk in the role so far. We're struggling to find reliable, professional reviews that actually discuss either the character or the actress. It's there, it's just not as nicely filled as the other sections.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 16:38, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Scorpion, I'm going out of town this whole week for the holiday, so I won't be able to work on the article during that time. If you think something needs improvement then please let me know so that I can address it when I return. If not...well, then you know what to do. Happy Holidays.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 14:00, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm happy with the page now, I'll promote. -- Scorpion0422 17:13, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Popularity

Hey, so tell me, how come the article doesn't mention anything about how Lana Lang is one of the most hated characters in a show since Wesley Crusher? I hear she's fairly notorious for it.--24.255.171.220 (talk) 21:37, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Got reliable sources?  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 23:52, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Does these Ksite (the #1 Smallville site) polls count?

http://www.ksitetv.com/forums/showthread.php?86119-What-went-wrong-with-Smallville (Lana not being killed voted as the show's biggest mistake) http://www.ksitetv.com/forums/showthread.php?31316-What-is-Your-Least-Favorite-Ship (The Clark and Lana (Clana) being voted the worst relationship in the series) The first link might perhaps be enough. I don't know if she's the most hated TV character, since Wesley, but there is no doubt that a majority of the show's fans hates her (and that's something that should be reflected in the article).--Coq87rouge (talk) 13:53, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

No, because Ksitetv is a fansite, and it's not a reliable poll. It's a poll of ksite viewers, which doesn't hold a lot of value.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me)

Okay, how about this interview with the creators: http://www.sundance.tv/series/the-writers-room/blog/2014/04/interview-with-smallville-creators-alfred-gough-and-miles-millar ? They admits regrets with dragging out the love story and that Lana come across as cold and unsympathetic to the viewers. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until the Lana hate becomes as well-documented as the hate of Wesley Crusher. --Coq87rouge (talk) 13:39, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

That is a direct interview, so that is ok. It doesn't require a section devoted to it. It would be included in the Characterization section.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 14:40, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

French-American

Since Lana's the descendant of a French witch (namely Isobel), would she count as a fictional French-American? The Mario Bros. are the bomb!, 11:45, 21 June 2009

I'd say no, only because that was a long time ago and not that immediate. It wasn't like her French side came over only a generation or so ago, but they have been here for a long time. If there was a category of "French descent", then yes. But, saying "French-American", to me at least, always insinuated that the family was in France until relatively recently.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 21:53, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Good point, especially since we don't actually know the ethnicity of Smallville's Lana. It's true that Kristin Kreuk is Eurasian (namely Chinese and Dutch), but that doesn't mean that Lana is too. The Mario Bros. are the bomb!, 8:21, 21 June 2009

Image

Can we go back to the old image of Lana that used to be in the infobox? I really don't care for the current one. She's way too cheerful. I can't remember her ever smiling like that (except in an alternate reality). Rreagan007 (talk) 15:14, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Being too cheerful isn't really a reason to change the image. As for the previous one, it was deleted by an admin for some stupid reason about non-free image of a living person - even though it was an image of the character from the official website. I really don't want to have to go through that fight again. This image is fine. It merely needs to depict the character, nothing more.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 15:40, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Well the person who deleted the image was clearly in error, and I'm not sure what would stop the deletion of this image on the same (incorrect) grounds. But aside from that, a character image should depict a character the way they usually appear in most episodes. She only appeared as this cheerful character in 1 episode. I'm not going to make a huge issue over this since it is relatively minor, and you've had to deal with enough minor (if not stupid) issues lately. But if you'd be ok with me changing it back to the old image, I'd keep an eye on it and I'd be willing to fight whatever objections come up over its use on this page. Rreagan007 (talk) 16:01, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
If you want to make the change go ahead. Just make sure you adjust the fair use rationale accordingly so that it reflects the promotional image over the screenshot.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 17:58, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I've updated the image and fair use rationale, and I'll keep an eye on it from now on to make sure it doesn't get incorrectly deleted again. Rreagan007 (talk) 18:45, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
The issue originally stemmed from some IP adding the image to Kristin Kreuk's page, as her primary image. Then I spent days trying to convince the admin that regardless of how the image was used by the IP, it was being correctly used on the fictional character's page - as it was supposed to be a representation of a fictional character. They deleted it anyway, so I found one that was from an episode (which was the best quality image she has on Google Image).  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 19:13, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't know why the new image wasn't showing up, but I've moved the image to another spot for now and removed the fair use rationale from the old image. That one should get automatically deleted and then we can upload the image back to the original spot cleanly. Rreagan007 (talk) 19:14, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Was it not showing up for you? I know that after I reuploaded it there wasn't a problem for me anymore.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 19:33, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
It still wasn't showing up for me properly even after you reuploaded it. The old one was still what was being displayed in the infobox. I don't have any idea what was causing the problem. Just one of those Wikipedia glitches I guess. Rreagan007 (talk) 03:26, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
That's weird. Usually, if I just refresh the page, the correct image will load (because the previous image was stored in the cookies). It didn't work so I reuploaded. Oh well, it works the way it is now.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 04:11, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Suit

Lana asked Dr Groll for the suit and he decided to give her it instead of Lex. Heck the man was trying to defend her when Mercer tried to kill her. And I trimmed the article, by the time I was done I added six lines. Six lines is too much. But the fact that you interpret what happened has Lana blackmailing Dr Groll, tell's me where your minds at. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Supergirlwoman (talkcontribs) 13:37, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

When she first meets Groll, she blackmails him into working for her instead of Lex in season 7. You are attributing a significance to a single episode of cooperative work when there is not. As for your "trimming", how do you trim 3 kbs of additional information that you added? That's not trimming, that's adding. What you added was also very extraneous details about events that were already covered. You also introduced inaccurate information. For just one example, Lana did not get 10 million from the divorce, she stole it from Lex. He even points that out to her. It was not until later when he said he would not press charges on her and that she could consider it the settlement. In reality, she stole it.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 17:36, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Character development / description too positive

Disclaimer: I am aware of the need for references as the basis of articles and the restrictions this brings on content. For lack of suitable references, the below is possibly best seen as an FYI.

My view of Lana's development and the description in this article stand far from each other. From my point of view, she started as a sweet and kind young woman with great potential, just to turn into a cold-hearted and superficial trophy wife. By no means would I consider the Lana of most seasons e.g. a strong woman. (On the contrary, her development indicates an underlying weakness to me.) Post-Lex she might have been doing things that qualify her as a "good guy" and which required a high level of competence, but she did these things for all the wrong reasons. (In Star Wars lingo, she fell victim to the dark side. "Darkseid" in light of Season 10...)

I would go as far as saying that her path downwards from the first several seasons is one of the greatest tragedies of the series. (She did not fall quite as deep as Lex, but his fall was pretty much pre-determined, unsurprising, and to a larger degree based on the negative influence of others/Lionel. Furthermore, he started from a worse season 1 position.)

Chloe forms a stark contrast as someone who started promising and grew stronger season for season. She would be a far better choice as e.g. a role-model for a teenage girl. 80.226.24.10 (talk) 21:29, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
