Dazed and confused

[edit]

Dazed and confused is a Jake Holmes song and not a Led Zeppelin song You cannot cover a cover — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shiningstar2 (talkcontribs) 19:55, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Dazed and Confused", as credited to Jimmy Page (correctly or incorrectly) is to be treated as an original song here.--L1A1 FAL (talk) 20:22, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, see Dazed and confused song page

I pulled the song credit from the liner notes of their 1st album (I make no claim as to the accuracy of their claim). In any case, seeing as the song, whether it is truly an original or not, is one of their more notable works, and covers of Zepplin's version specifically have been done, it's staying here. --L1A1 FAL (talk) 20:55, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

August 2017 addition of songs credited to other artists

[edit]

@BeatlesLedTV: The criteria for inclusion on the list specifically states: "it does not include songs recorded or performed by Led Zeppelin that are officially credited (fully or partially) to other songwriters." Several songs have been added that are officially now partially or fully credited to other artists (see 2014 remastered LZ albums for more up-to-date credits). So far, the following songs do not meet the criteria and should be removed:

  • Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
  • Bring It On Home
  • Dazed and Confused
  • The Lemon Song
  • When the Levee Breaks
  • Whole Lotta Love

I noticed that after I started adding refs thanks for doing that. Did you move them to cover versions sections of their respective pages or just remove them completely? BeatlesLedTV (talk) 20:18, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Most were unreferenced or had other problems, so they were not added to the song articles. Good work on adding the refs. This is actually starting to look like an encyclopedia article! —Ojorojo (talk) 13:40, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I saw this had zero references so I knew something had to be done. Would it be possible to up this to a good article? BeatlesLedTV (talk) 16:06, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly moving in that direction, although I think you mean a featured list (a somewhat higher standard – there is no GA equivalent). There are several "List of cover versions of X songs", "List of artists who have covered X songs", etc., but I didn't notice any FLs. Maybe a close review of the WP:Featured list criteria, WP:Stand-alone lists, and MOS:LIST would be beneficial. One thing I notice is the short song intros are sometimes repetitious and awkward – "track" (and position), "released", are overused – and the tense goes back and forth (is/was). Maybe think about this. —Ojorojo (talk) 17:47, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah once I get done with all the refs I'm gonna make the summary of every song consistent with one another. BeatlesLedTV (talk) 20:35, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Since this is about cover versions, I wonder how much extra info (if any) is really needed. Identifying the album track number, etc. doesn't add to understanding the cover versions. Links to the song and album should be sufficient if readers want more info on the original. —Ojorojo (talk) 15:08, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah if anything I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to sort everything once I get a source for everything. BeatlesLedTV (talk) 17:49, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
To make a list sortable (if that's what you mean), first it has to be formatted into a table. It's a lot of work and more useful for lists of songs by artist, such as List of songs recorded by Led Zeppelin. For covers, the most important value is the name of the song, followed by the artist. To see covers by the year they were recorded or on which album seems to have limited value (the refs would go into a unsortable column). The List of cover versions of Beach Boys songs uses a sortable table – see what you think. —Ojorojo (talk) 19:59, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to put everything into sortable tables soon, I just want to figure out how I'm going to arrange everything, meaning am I gonna base the article on artists' names, song titles', the albums they were originally on, etc. I'm mainly trying to figure out how I'm going to do that, if you know what I mean. BeatlesLedTV (talk) 19:34, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Because this article is based on songs only credited to each of the 4 members & not songs they recorded credited to other artists, should we have who each song is credited to? BeatlesLedTV (talk) 19:37, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A quick review of other sortable "List of cover versions" (Category:Lists of songs) shows the most common format is: Artist, Song, Year, Release (usually album or single), and Note (usually citation). None included the songwriter(s) and since LZ songs are usually credited to two or more of the group, I don't think it would be helpful. (Zeppelin has been criticized a lot for plagiarism, so it is better to avoid including songs actually credited to others as "Led Zeppelin songs". It would forestall the kind of arguments seen in the sections above, e.g., "How can you cover a cover?").
Since this list is about songs, a better format might be (with additional sort, scope, etc.):
Song Artist Year Release Note(s)
Achilles Last Stand Dream Theater 1995 A Change of Seasons EP medley [1]
Achilles Last Stand Jason Bonham Band 1996 In the Name of My Father – The Zepset – Live from Electric Ladyland medley [2]
Achilles Last Stand Vitamin String Quartet 2006 The String Quartet Tribute to Led Zeppelin bonus DVD edition [3]
Ojorojo (talk) 14:58, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that looks great I think I'll try that. Thanks very much. BeatlesLedTV (talk) 17:57, 18 August 2017 (UTC) And I definitely agree with you many associate "Dazed and Confused" and When the Levee Breaks" with Zeppelin, meaning many artists who cover those tracks usually cover Zeppelin's version. But yes Zeppelin's versions are still covers so you can't cover a cover. BeatlesLedTV (talk) 18:49, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
FYI only: FLC reviews may require WP:ACCESS for row and col scopes (see MOS:DTT). This came up during a review for the Elmore James discography. —Ojorojo (talk) 14:49, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sampling Zeppelin songs

[edit]

I noticed that the section on sampling doesn't list the Beastie Boys' use of When the Levee Breaks (in Rhymin' and Stealin'). Now I know WtLB is a Zeppelin take on a classic blues number and wouldn't be included in the list of cover versions so as to forestall discussions about songwriting credits. But the Beasties were literally sampling the Zeppelin performance. The issue of songwriting credits doesn't arise, and I don't think the section is complete without including this and other cases like it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.30.84.215 (talk) 03:08, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Orbison

[edit]

"For the Roy Orbison song, see Cry Softly Lonely One." is confusing to readers as it refers to an album rather than a song.

A search for "Cry Softly Lonely One" would bring up the song called "Cry Softly Lonely One" with no reference to O's song 'Communication Breakdown'.

Perhaps it could read "For Roy Orbison's Communication Breakdown see the album "Cry Softly Lonely One".

Mind you; We could just ignore this and cause a communication breakdown.

NewCity Rockers "Black Dog"

[edit]

This band charted with its commercially-released single in 1987. Their entry on Billboard's website confirms this (at the time all Hot 100 entries were required to be commercial releases) but does not list songwriting info. The charts themselves (six weeks in April and May, peaking the week ending May 2 at number 80) do list songwriting info with familiar names along with label information, but this may border on WP:SYNTH since they do not explicitly state that it's a cover. The album info is more dubious; the web results are fairly consistent regarding album title and track listing, but are from sources of questionable credibility, and one (Discogs) has been rejected on WP:RSP because of user-generated content. Hopefully this info can lead to other, more straight-ahead sources. Also note that there is at least one instance of the band's name as a red link on WP so that, in addition to them being distributed by a major label, may be enough to consider them notable enough to be included in the list. Stairway to Heaven

[edit]

Is there any reason the Rolf Harris version hasn't been included on the list?

SONGCOVER

[edit]

Toddst1: Hello. I haven't seen WP:SONGCOVER applied to stand-alone lists. It includes "Only cover versions/renditions important enough to have gained attention in their own right should be added to song articles." [emphasis added] Is there some precedent for applying it to lists of covers? A quick check of a few "Lists of cover versions ..."[1] doesn't show that SONGCOVER is followed. —Ojorojo (talk) 15:11, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody's Fault but Mine

[edit]

Nobody's Fault but Mine is a song by Blind Willie Johnson. As written in a topic above, the list "does not include songs recorded or performed by Led Zeppelin that are officially credited (fully or partially) to other songwriters". Hence, it must be removed. 2804:5C:51E1:8D00:6C6F:7796:B3ED:3B3B (talk) 05:05, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
