Jack Welch?

[edit]

Why is he on this list?

Obviously, this Jack Welch is not an illustrator, but there was an illustrator called Jack Welch (see this link). I'll work up a stub for a new article at Jack Welch (illustrator) (I've already changed the link in the list). --Nicknack009 16:10, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability criteria?

[edit]

I believe we should have some sort of notability criteria for inclusion on this list. A criterion I've argued and seen successfully implemented on other such lists, is that someone should have a Wikipedia article about them to be listed. Then we push the problem of deciding who to list and who not to down to the poor souls following AFD, and we also give more incentives for articles about notable illustrators to be written, not just listed with a name. Right now I expect many of the entries currently listed with a red link to be the names of less notable illustrators, and maybe even some listed for vanity reasons. Comments? If they don't satisfy WP:BIO they shouldn't be on the list. The 'have they got an article' test seems reasonable to me. CiaranG 12:24, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can Alain be deleted ?? Teapotgeorge 22:01, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's an odd one - it actually links to Emile Auguste Chartier which is equally odd. There's some discussion there, which I've looked at before and couldn't decide what to do. CiaranG 22:28, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've tagged the article. By all means propose for deletion - I'll probably do so sooner or later if nobody attempts to provide any further evidence of notability. CiaranG 22:26, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed - removed the above 5. You could remove these yourself if you've checked them out. Don't forget WP:BOLD CiaranG 22:38, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tagged this article for speedy deletion - there's no real assertion of notability. I'd suggest it should remain here as long as the article remains. CiaranG 22:46, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Ciarang I deleted a few more obvious ones too... looking a bit tidier.Teapotgeorge 22:55, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was a very messy list wasn't it. I've had a few more hacks like this at it before today as well - thanks for getting involved. On top of that, there is the issue of all the notable illustrators NOT on the list. It might also be nice if each entry had a very brief (i.e. less than one line) description, but that's definitely a job for another day! CiaranG 22:59, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Purpose of the list

[edit]

As it stands, this is merely a list of article names. That is better handled by using [[Category:Illustrators]] since it will automatically add each article to the list and alphabetize them. For this page to be something other than a hand-made redundancy of the category, each entry should contain at least one sentence about the illustrator - which the categories don't have. -- Kainaw(what?) 17:36, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As a list also it is not that useful because it is too BROAD and GENERAL. If we are going to have lists rather than categories, I want to separate a List of children's book illustrators for example. Alex (talk) 06:03, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Five years later:

The way I got into editing this list today, was that I was looking for a children's illustrator whose name I couldn't remember. I found it sad to see that Wikipedia had jumbled every genre of illustration into one category heading. To make this easy, first I would take all the children's book illustrators out and make that a list. From there, I can be of help on the balance, but know children's illustration much better.03:30, 19 February 2014 (UTC)Mrs-piggle-wiggle (talk)

List of children's literature writers covers work--nominally children's literature-- that range from (the texts of) children's picture books to classics that have been consigned to the nursery, such as Gulliver's Travels.
Regarding both writing and illustration, this is unhelpful for many purposes. And it's an issue distinct from Lists or Categories?
We do have Category:Children's book illustrators now --although not yet much sub-classed by nationality, having only Canadian, French, and Indian specifications.
