This should be a disambiguation page

[edit]

This page should not be an outright redirect to 2024 Summer Olympics, per WP:RECENTISM. Rather, it should be a disambiguation page in the same vein as Los Angeles Olympics, Salt Lake City Olympics, Lake Placid Olympics, Beijing Olympics, and Innsbruck Olympics, to name a few other examples where cities have hosted (or will soon host) multiple Olympic games.

Given that the 2024 Summer Olympics are presently ongoing, though, I don't currently feel strongly that this warrants a "speedy" resolution prior to the conclusion of these Olympics in ~2 weeks. The following factors, though, should be monitored to ensure their balance doesn't worsen in the meantime. At time of writing:

  • In the positive, the redirect is helping route ~1,500 pageviews/day which are undoubtedly seeking information on the ongoing games, but
  • In the negative, there are already 20 articles in the main namespace which link directly here that will ultimately need to be disambiguated.

I converted this to a redirect. When I did so, I looked at many of the incoming links and did not find a single one that intended to link to this page, but the target was the current Olympic Games. Schwede66 15:35, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Now that the Games are over, I reviewed the metrics presented above:

  • Pageviews are substantially down; an initial spike around the Opening Ceremony subsided within less than a week, and there was only a modest bump around the Closing Ceremony.
  • Inbound links are currently only at 27, up from 20 near the start of the Games.

In anticipation that this page will soon become a disambiguation page, per strong precedent and further consensus currently forming at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2024 August 11#Paris Olympics, I'll begin work on disambiguating those inbound links, as I expect most intend to target 2024 Summer Olympics specifically.

Just a note that I disambiguated all incoming links when I converted this to a redirect, but I see that list has grown again. Schwede66 15:38, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, I don't observe such contributions around that time (24 July 2024 ~00:00 UTC), but the important thing is that, between our efforts, it's currently handled. Talk on London Olympics has recently resulted in its conversion to a WP:DAB; I expect this will shortly follow, per ongoing RfD consensus and strong precedent. --Tim Parenti (talk) 20:45, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bold

[edit]

imo this conversion to disambiguation is not controversial and there is clear precedent, it's one of the best ways to make a bad redirect good, I suggest following wp:bold 172.56.179.211 (talk) 16:09, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

While I agree in principle, since someone started a discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2024 August 11#Paris Olympics, we should now defer to that for the specifics. There are many possible ways to go about restoring a proper disambiguation here; it seems the easiest may be to simply restore a previous version that once existed here but has since been moved. --Tim Parenti (talk) 18:28, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
