Composer

[edit]

We have two refs for the composer of this song. AllMusic says it was composed by Dave Grusin.[1] Discogs says it was composed by Dave Grusin, John Kay, Goldy McJohn, E.Ray, and R.Jackson.[2] I don't know which is correct, but it seems wrong to say it was composed by John Kay alone, because that's not supported by either ref. I agree. There are additional sources (lyric postings) that refer to Kay as the (only) composer. I went with the allmusic credits which include Grusin and McJohn. I have no idea who the other people are. McJohn makes sense because he is also in the band, Grusin was composing the Candy soundtrack and was mixing in Roger McGuinn content for the rest of his score. Steppenwolf was the core of the soundtrack so composing the song certainly makes sense as well. The copyright office file would be the confirming source, but I can't find a lookup. @Kendall-K1: @Trackinfo: BMI Database says John Kay only, so that's clearly the right answer. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 02:37, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I get an error when I click on that link. Since this song has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial published works it shouldn't be too hard to find one that says who wrote it. Kendall-K1 (talk) 02:40, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Link works just fine for me. If that doesn't work, the album cover on the discogs link also credits only John Kay. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 02:44, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am surprised copyrightencyclopedia.com can find my own copyrights, but not this song. John Kay does show a few results there under his real name, Joachim Fritz Krauledat, but again not this song. Trackinfo (talk) 05:14, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Trackinfo: Does the BMI link work for you? I get redirected to [3], which says "Please re-enter your search text". Kendall-K1 (talk) 10:36, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
When you get there, use the BMI number 1261048 and you will see what he is seeing. A valid source. We have multiple conflicting valid sources. The question we need to answer is if Kay is the exclusive composer. Trackinfo (talk) 17:50, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Allmusic and discogs aren't reliable sources, and since both BMI and the 45 label say it's exclusively Kay, I'm happy to go with that. Kendall-K1 (talk) 19:18, 12 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
