Official Title

[edit]

I see a potential repeat of Talk:My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU#Official Title if we don't settle this now. I'm all for using Official English titles to replace romaji wherever they are available.

In this case, the only available Titles are

  • "Preferential Measure Organization Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C3" as listed on [Anime News Network]; being mentioned as the "The official English title.."
  • "Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C3" being the title of the anime
  • "Tokurei Sochi Dantai Stella Jo-Gakuin Kōtō-ka C3-Bu", the current romaji
  • "C3-Bu" as the short form

My take is that the page should be redirected to "Preferential Measure Organization Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C3" but lets see what everyone thinks about this first. I've done a bit of light web searches but unless I missed it, no English company has as yet licensed it. Citing something from - Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Anime- and manga-related articles states Use the most commonly known English titles for article names. If it is translated, this is usually the official English translation. If there are multiple official titles, use the one that is best known and that has contributed most to the work's becoming known in the broader English-speaking world. <KirtZJ>Talk 14:59, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some clarifications:
  • The manga English title, as stated in the ANN article, is present on the tanks' covers, as you can see in the cited page: here.
  • The anime English title (which is just the accordingly trimmed version of the manga title) is present in the first PV: here.
  • No idea whether the original web manga has an official English title. A cursory look around didn't reveal anything.
There has already been some concern whether something like this can be considered a "title". (See this dead-end discussion.)
Personally I would like to wait until an English licensor (either streaming or otherwise) shows up, and to keep the romaji title for the time being. ー HigherFive | 16:14, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I usually only move pages when they are licensed, but the bit about the "official English title" on ANN confused me. It is definitely a good idea to wait. <KirtZJ>Talk 16:31, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Crunchyroll stream announced: [1]. Will move and edit accordingly. ー HigherFive | 21:27, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have made some changes as I see fit, but have some concerns.

  • The lead does not need to start with the article's title, (see WP:BEGIN) although many anime/manga articles do, some going as far as to say "<anime title> is a manga series...", when the manga isn't known by that title. Something like "<anime title> is an adaptation of the <manga title> series should be avoided per MOS:ANIME#Content. On that note, should the article be rewritten with the web manga being the original material in mind?
  • I have set the infobox header's name parameter to the manga title, but neither MOS:ANIME, nor Template:Infobox animanga are clear on its usage. That is, whether it should match the article title (although it does if omitted), or the original material's title (in which case, I guess it should be changed to the web manga's).

Any input is greatly appreciated. ー HigherFive | 22:04, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are quite a few examples of articles where the series original medium isn't licensed, such as light novels, but the article and header is referred to by its most commonly referred English names from other mediums that are licensed (examples being A Certain Magical Index, Is This a Zombie? and Haganai). I think since the anime has an official English title, which would most likely be adapted by the manga if it were to be adapted. Plus starting off an article with Tokurei whatchamacallit when there's a perfectly good English title available just leaves an awkward taste and doesn't make for pleasant Wikiing.Wonchop (talk) 22:55, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've been thinking about this as well and we can't avoid coming across grey areas such as these on Wikipedia from time to time. Since I tend to favor Titles that have been officially licensed, I have to agree with Wonchop. If the Manga is ever licensed under a different name, we could always change the title and simply tell them apart using the infobox parameters, but we probably won't need to as the bold quote from Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Anime- and manga-related articles aforementioned above is already self explanatory. <KirtZJ>Talk 23:17, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not against the English. The sauce of my beef is that the manga and anime's titles do not match (as is the case with the franchises you pointed out), albeit barely. I propose using "Preferential Measure Organization Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C3" to refer to the manga in the first sentence. Actually, adhering to WP:COMMONNAME, either the romanized title or "Special Measures Unit: Stella Girls' Academy High School's C3 Club" would be more correct, as these two are used in English-language reliable sources. HigherFive | 00:57, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, I guess I don't mind the current lead. ー HigherFive | 01:01, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is relevant to this topic, but the translation of "Shīkyūbu" as "C3-Bu" seems incorrect to me. "bu" at the end of "Shīkyūbu" is the end of the word "cubed" ("C Cubed") rather than the suffix for "club", isn't it? If it were "C3-Bu", it would be "Shīkyūbu-bu", wouldn't it? Alex T Snow (talk) 01:49, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We're not discussing actual translations, only the titles used by reputable sources especially Crunchyroll. C³ seems to be the preferred stylization now though and doesnt change the meaning of the title when taken from that respect. —KirtZMessage 02:03, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, okay. I was correct about the translations though, right? "Shīkyūbu" is "C3", not "C3-bu". Using the most common translation would be really silly if it's usually mistranslated. Edit: I just found that in the manga Karila specifically says that the "bu" at the end is a play on words, that's why it's not "Shīkyūbu-bu"; it simultaneously is the end of "cubed" while also being the "bu" suffix. Alex T Snow (talk) 03:59, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the current 4Koma manga is just titled "C3-bu", nothing else to it. It also doesn't seem to be mentioned on the article at all either. Alex T Snow (talk) 07:37, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it is "4-koma Shīkyūbu" (4コマ しーきゅーぶ). I have added it to the article. HigherFive | 03:13, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The 4-koma's second tank

[edit]

It seems like the second volume of the 4-koma manga was cancelled, but I can't find a reliable source stating so. Any help will be greatly appreciated. HigherFive | 11:40, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
