Trump is impeached (2019)?

[edit]

Currently, the section for 2019 says, "The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is impeached". I'm not American, but I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened yet. 183.83.227.242 (talk) 16:58, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Impeachment is the process by which a legislative body levels charges against a government official. Impeachment does not in itself remove the official definitively from office; it is similar to an indictment in criminal law, and thus it is essentially the statement of charges against the official." He was indicted in the house and then acquitted in the senate, the indictment doesn't go away. Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:08, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Deaths of" sections

[edit]

Someone without a long in is adding many "Deaths of" people to each year. I think this is the type of thing that can quickly get out of hand. I think it either needs criteria or needs to be dropped all together. Same with Timeline of the 21st century. tahc chat 16:56, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that there are too many on this page and they're too American-centric. Same for the previous century. M.Clay1 (talk) 08:20, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure if they warrant their own page but split it is better than leaving them here as they are (namely, without criteria for inclusion), so I will split it out. tahc chat 20:09, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure that page is needed (almost every person famous today will die in the 21st century), but it's certainly good to not have that information on this page. power~enwiki (π, ν) 20:38, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Currently there is (more) discussion on this at Talk:Deaths of the 20th century. Please talk there. tahc chat 04:03, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

seriously guys?

[edit]

I know this is somewhat petty to mention but a 13-year-old listing his own birthday as one of the pivotal events of the 21st century took 4 days to revert? Serendipodous (talk) 18:06, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of deaths

[edit]

The 'deaths of,' ignoring the obvious bias has flip flop requirements. Is Anthony Quinn's death as notable as Dale Earnhardt's? (random example) And what should be the requirement? A major award (hall of fame, oscar) in their field? A membership in a limited order such as an OBE or FRS? Dat GuyTalkContribs 19:05, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'd get rid of them, personally, except perhaps for the deaths that have their own pages. Serendipodous 18:09, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What's with all the Philippines stuff?

[edit]

Filipino news seems to be given an unjustifiable focus in this list.

The Philippines have just reached enough internet penetration to become a presence on this site, and they've figured out that if they just keep adding material after it's deleted, they can add whatever they want. Serendipodous 07:23, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request for comment re: Filipino additions

[edit]

Recently a number of additions on the topic of the Philippines have been added, but I am not in a position to judge the notability or lack thereof of contemoporary Filipino history. I would like a second opinion regarding which entries meet notability and which do not. Serendipodous 17:28, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Procedural comment - Serendipodous, I would suggest rewording this RfC statement to be a bit more neutral, and to make it clearer what the content at issue is. The explanation about Filipino IPs and the rising profile of Filipino internet users is unnecessary, whereas a clearer explanation of what content is being proposed for inclusion/exclusion (perhaps in the form of diffs) would be appreciated. signed, Rosguill talk 18:25, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Serendipodous 18:52, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rosguill: I removed some of the Filipino events and merged a few others. The events that I removed were not at all notable relative to the others (Example: An annual Philippines beauty pageant included on the same year that the European migrant crisis started). The IP adding this has also added an extremely excessive amount of content to 2020 in the Philippines (and other year in Philippines pages, see the histories of those pages). I'm not sure if this is possible to do for IP's but I think a warning might be necessary. Dan the Animator 19:44, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dantheanimator: I already warned him. I've reported him on the edit warring noticeboard. To absolutely zero interest, apparently. Serendipodous 20:57, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of group resource

[edit]

I would like to invite any interested editors here to join the task force for Contemporary History. One of our core goals is to highlight and promote the coverage of contemporary history as its own distinct area here at Wikipedia.

We differ from a simple effort to cover current events, in that we seek to provide the editing community with resources that would allow it to provide broad and comprehensive coverage of articles on contemporary history as a broad topical field, rather than simply on individual current events as they may occur.

to that end, we have set up articles such as 2020s in political history, which allow the whole editing community to adopt a broad scope in keeping wikipedia updated with broad historical trends, topics and events, as they occur, but also as they become relevant to the field of history overall. I hope that sounds helpful and worthwhile to you. you are welcome to join us in any way, or to offer any input or ideas that you may wish. we welcome your input. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 14:48, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is this list a joke?

[edit]

I tried to clean some, but how can tons of local news be in a timeline of the century? Like Juanito Jose Diaz Remulla III, the son of Philippine Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla is arrested for a parcel allegedly containing ₱1.3 million worth of marijuana. Or registration of sim cards in Phillipines? Or death of a local star? This should either be cleaned or complete purged, but now it _is_ a joke. Artem.G (talk) 16:20, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

People keep unprotecting this page, and as soon as they do, the Filipino guy shows up again. Serendipodous 18:29, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not only the Filipino guy, mass shootings in the US are so common there is no sense to include each one here. And new movies released or some team wins NBA... But I agree, it's mostly the Filipino local news that make the list ridiculously long and irrelevant. Artem.G (talk) 19:50, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And for example, the sandy hook school shooting that isn't at all political in nature is listed, not killing that much. 2603:8001:8400:DC34:58FB:142B:B558:3297 (talk) 03:39, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
and October 14: Skydiver Felix Baumgartner becomes the first person to break the sound barrier without a vehicle. sounds trivial, but it should be kept due to the scientific significance, also February 9: Bong Joon-ho's Parasite becomes the first South Korean film to receive Academy Award recognitions at the 92nd Academy Awards. is trivial 2603:8001:8400:DC34:58FB:142B:B558:3297 (talk) 03:44, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

remove two points at the bottom of 2022 and 2021, about K-pop and P-pop respectively because it is not real history and has no relevance. (or at least fix the grammar) Leangucoo (talk) 07:10, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How "important" does a country need to be for the election of its head of state to be mentioned?

[edit]

Can we establish an objective criterion? Perhaps a member of the G20? Serendipodous 16:56, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

even this is not sufficient - in previous year UK got three PMs. Is it that important who became a PM/President in a democratic country after non-controversial elections? Artem.G (talk) 17:08, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Artem.G: Are you saying we should remove all uncontroversial transfers of power? Serendipodous 14:12, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
why not? There is no strict rules here, but I don't see how it's a defining event of a year if there is nothing prominent about it. First democratic elections in a new democracy is important, second one is very important, but 52 is just local news. Artem.G (talk) 14:17, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the elections, keeping the "firsts". The only election I kept was Kim Jong Un's, since that "election" was really a monarchical succession. I've also removed the Olympics, again excluding "firsts". Serendipodous 12:37, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

POINT OF ORDER: Many countries, including the UK, the first one mentioned here, don't elect their head of state. HiLo48 (talk) 00:17, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

fair, but should uncontroversial transfers of power be mentioned? And the head of the ruling party is elected by party members (in UK), though of course I agree that it's not general elections. Artem.G (talk) 07:38, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding is that head of state in the UK (and in many other countries) is the monarch, i.e. Not elected at all. HiLo48 (talk) 22:42, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the UK, you elect your head of government. Serendipodous 00:44, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Indirectly, yes, but this thread isn't about the head of government. It's about the head of state. They are not the same thing. HiLo48 (talk) 04:00, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Remove repeated event

2018 section has a repeated event.

I think the second point should be deleted unless it is somehow intentional. SirSailfish9 (talk) 16:55, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rules, rules, rules

[edit]

This section is such a hodgepodge work. I suggest the following guide:

  1. The list should contain major political, economic, cultural, scientific, technological and natural events.
  2. The events should be consequential, if not on a global scale, then at least on a local scale.
  3. If not consequential, then having a major transient impact

Positive examples:

- wars, coups, major floods (an example of a transient impact), elections of leaders in USA, China, Russia, megaprojects like satellite constellations, major space telescopes and reusable rockets, AI and the Moon programs (both the Chinese and the American). Examples of major local political events are the election of Bukele in El Salvador and the "Wagner" mutiny in Russia.

Negative examples:

The release of GTA 5, airplane crashes, minor terrorist attacks, Apple's MacBooks, launches of crews to ISS... These all are currently listed items. There some that are outright wrong, like "National Ignition Facility achieves first fusion ignition" - what was CLAIMED to be achieved is energy breakeven. 91.139.166.157 (talk) 14:47, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
