Bosom Buddies?

How come there is no mention of his TV start on Bosom Buddies? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.184.177.136 (talk) 02:55, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

5'10?

I think the source about him being 5'10 is inaccurate. I generally see sources creditting him at 6'1, and he appears to be quite tall onscreen.

Here' a picture of him next to 6'0 Leonardo DiCaprio

http://entimg.msn.com/i/gal/TomHanks/wood0388506210_400.jpg

I think Leo is shorter than 6'. There aren't many 5' 10" actors, but there are many 6' actors. Tom really is 6 or maybe 6' 1". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.60.68.6 (talk) 02:42, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Highest Grossing Actor of all time?

According to this site, Samuel L Jackson is the higher than Tom Hanks. 84.66.72.88 14:38, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

According to the sidebar on this CNN page, Harrison Ford's grosses "are the second-highest of any actor in Hollywood history, after Tom Hanks." (emphasis mine; note: no mention of Samuel Jackson). Furthermore, according to Box Office Mojo, Samuel Jackson ranks 8th on the list. That's two distinct, co-supporting, reputable sources that agree on at least the top two names on the list (and neither of them are Samuel Jackson! ;). 216.240.7.149 03:33, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Here's the problem as I see it. Box Office Mojo doesn't count most minor roles - so a few of Jackson's bit parts in films that grossed a lot of money aren't counted. Thus the discreprancy. Mad Jack O'Lantern 03:37, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
CNN also references Hanks and Ford as #1 and #2 respectively (which mirrors Box Office Mojo's data) and, although they don't cite their source, I would take the "word" of two concurring, reputable sources over one that cites only the actor himself as the source[1]: "Jackson says he recently passed Harrison Ford". Although that article does cite IMDB as saying he's #2, it doesn't actually link to any information to support that statement.216.240.7.149 03:59, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Well we should probably put up both accounts, and note the contradiction, if both sources are reliable. Mad Jack O'Lantern 05:25, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Samel L. Jackson is not the highest grosing actor of all time, it is Hanks. Gross credit for films they starred in (had a major role) and should not include films with 4 minite cameos. 205.188.116.8 13:13, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

If you indeed only count for films where someone has a major role, then it is really between tom hanks and harrison ford...however if you count all films one has appeared in...still samuel jackson may be one of the top contenders but my money will be on Christopher Lee...he has appeared in star wars, lord of the rings, james bond and numerous other films....---Khernitz 05:04, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Allright, i'm going to point some things out now:

  • A. According to the site we have as our source, Eddie Murphy is the highest grossing actor of all time (Ya right!)
  • B. According to that same site, Leonardo DiCaprio isn't even on the list of top 50 actors which drop total lifetime gross down to 1.3 billion dollars, despite the fact that his one movie Titanic would put him in the number 19 spot, and then if you added all the other films he's been in he'd be boosted even higher to at least the top 5.
  • C. According to the last piece of information we had here about him, it said he had the highest gross of all time at 2.6 billion dollars

There's not much you can do about the image without finding one someone is willing to give up the rights to in writing. The 'paparazzi' sell images for hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands. Maybe Tom will grant us with a picture? He's probably the only actor I can think of that has lead his life with the greatest of integrity and done wonderful things for this world with his entertaining films. I would love to see an image that reflects him a bit better than this one for sure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.60.68.6 (talk) 02:45, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

At this page the years of all Oscars and nominations is one year later and it may be correct because then would be the same years than golden globes.

If you clic on the year at this page then it shows the nominations and winners. I think that the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Actor is bad because the years are the years of the films and not the years of the Oscar celebrations, for example the last year is 2006 althought it should be 2007

Who the HELL is Joshua Adamson?

I met the name Joshua Adamson in the bio, and also two other bios, Stephen Hawking and John Donne. Well, who the hell is that vampire, who was the life-long friend of men both in the 17. and in the 20. century, and about whom they wrote with the same sentence in each article?

I suggest it is a media hack. There is a Joshua Adamson, he edits the Urban Dictionary.com site. Also there is a science student Joshua, etc. Or maybe there is a bored teenager Joshua. Don't you think it is a very stupid way to advertise a name?

Prop 8 section (Political views)

This section seems quite haphazardly written. It lists amounts of money raised by both the pro- and anti- Prop 8 campaigns, yet does nothing to link this directly to Tom Hanks. The cited source links to a LA Times article that simply shows that Prop 8 passed and which counties passed it.

Until there is some reference-able source for Mr. Hanks' contributions to the campaign against Prop 8 there is no reason to include this information. It is enough to state his opposition to the legislation (preferably with a source...), and to describe his later actions re: the LDS church.

In addition, one of the references pertaining to the LDS controversy is a link to a blog. While the blog appears to have a fairly large readership, the article reads as an opinion piece, and I am unsure of its usefulness as a verifiable source. It would be much better to find an actual news article for this piece of information.

This edit was intended to clear up this section, but it seems to have been reverted: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tom_Hanks&oldid=348913127 Josejuan05 (talk) 07:39, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Indeed it was. Did you even bother to look at what you left? You blatantly cut content that was sourced to the Los Angeles Times and included information about Hanks re: Prop 8, cut something tagged for a source (that isn't a given action), cut content that was sourced also to Fox News, and there is no requirement that we present how much money Hanks himself gave. That he verbally supported the opposition is all that is necessary. Your cuts were excessive and pointy. Wildhartlivie (talk) 19:58, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
The previous edit was very brief. But the content that was cut was nothing particularly tied to Hanks.
→Hanks didn't raise $44 million against Prop 8, nor did he raise $38 million for it, nor did the Times source verify those amounts.
→The Prop 8 article describes Prop 8, including its fundraising and passage. I would suggest that the Times-sourced information is not particularly relevant to this page (that is, Tom Hanks), and that its inclusion is unnecessary, but that could be debated. Since the source doesn't mention Hanks, it may as well be shortened and generalized to "Hanks raised money for the campaign."
→The Fox News source was actually retained, and the content that could be associated with it was retained. The original page suggested that Hanks was in the habit of badmouthing the Mormon church, when the truth and the sourced article indicated that he simply said this disparaging phrase once in public.
→The reverted form truly does have bad grammar Thegeniusboy05 20:35, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Personal life

Shouldn't we have a little 'personal life' section which states when he met his wife, got married, had children, etc? That seems to be the norm in most articles about people. I'm not looking for salacious details about his private life, but the article could do with his family having a mention, especially as they are in the film industry too.... 79.69.54.132 (talk) 22:19, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

In "Real Genius"

Part of the article says, "Hanks also appears for a moment as an uncredited extra in the movie Real Genius (1985), when the lead character, Mitch, bumps into him in a crowd."

LDS Faith

Doctrine taught by any church shouldn't change because of public opinion. God knew from the beginning of time that there would be the movements that are occurring today. He knew that proposition 8 would happen, and bring the controversy it would.

You know a church is wrong, if they change eternal doctrine, so satisfy public opinion. Done--Bbb23 (talk) 00:59, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Under the 1996 to Present section the following: "Hanks' next endeavor, released on May 15, 2009, was a film adaptation of Angels & Demons, Dan Brown's prequel to The Da Vinci Code" should be edited to "Hanks' next endeavor, released on May 15, 2009, was a film adaptation of Angels & Demons, also written by Dan Brown."

The reason for the change is because it is factual erroneous to call Angels and Demons the prequel, because it was written before The DaVinci Code(Angels and Demons was released in 2001 whereas The DaVinci Code was released in 2003), making The DaVinci code a sequel (a prequel implies it was written after, but the story takes place before). While the movie Angels and Demons may have been a prequel because The DaVinci Code movie was released first, in the above quotation, the article is referring to the books, which makes the information incorrect. If Angels and Demons is going to be referred to as a prequel, it should be made clear the article is referencing the movie franchise, not the books. 24.234.191.181 (talk) 17:27, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Saving Private Ryan

Done--Bbb23 (talk) 23:28, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

A small edit for a not-so-small inaccuracy. The article states that:

"For Saving Private Ryan he teamed up with Steven Spielberg to make a film about D-Day, the landing at Omaha Beach, and a quest through war-torn France to bring back a soldier who has a ticket home."

Though the movie does open on D-Day at Omaha Beach, the movie is not about D-Day, nor about Omaha Beach--it is about the search for the soldier. To write that the movie is about D-Day (or Omaha Beach, for that matter) suggests that the movie focuses on that set of events. While the movie does depict D-Day, it does so only to contextualize the story that follows. The movie isn't even "set" on D-Day or at Omaha Beach--the first few minutes occur there, but the rest of the action occurs for the most part in various parts of France.

Hopefully someone with editorial powers can correct the misleading statement! Thank you... Grammech (talk) 23:03, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Removal of "minor" awards

An editor has removed what s/he believes to be "minor" awards in the Hanks filmography. I've never seen anyone do this before and wonder what the basis is for doing so, let alone how one decides which awards are minor and which are not. I haven't reverted the change, but I'd like to hear from others about it.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:18, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

for an actor like this who has received numerous nominations and has won numerous major awards, we only list the major ones. This has been accepted on many biographies as the way to go. Monkeymanman (talk) 12:19, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
That isn't particularly helpful. It's just a matter of fact statement with little support. Putting that aside, are you making a distinction between awards and nominations? In other words, if Hanks is nominated for a SAG award, you would remove it, but if he won a SAG award, you would leave it in? If so, that's even more editorial judgment that's open to question as to the reputation of the group that's giving the award intersecting with nomination vs. win. Also, you say "for an actor like this", which implies that it's okay to have more "minor" awards with less notable actors. Where do we draw the line on that one?--Bbb23 (talk) 15:47, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
are you making a distinction between awards and nominations No.
Also, you say "for an actor like this", which implies that it's okay to have more "minor" awards with less notable actors. I mean for an actor who has won and been nominated for numerous major awards, i.e. he has been nominated 5 times for academy awards. Monkeymanman (talk) 16:12, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your direct answers. I still see this as an inherently difficult framework to apply. You have to decide which awards are important and you have to decide how many awards an actor has to get before he qualifies for removal of so-called minor awards. My inclination is to revert your changes (seems to me that you have to justify the removal of sourced material that is relevant to the subject) until at least a consensus has been reached as to Hanks (I have little hope that a global consenus can be reached), but I'm going to wait a bit to see if anyone besides you and me engage in this dialog and also to ponder the ramifications a bit more.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:33, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
I dont believe that minor awards should be included on any biography, if you do include them then where do you end. None of the awards were sourced to begin with and none of the awards are sourced at present, so i removed no sourced material from the article. I have recently discussed this very subject with 2 other editors on Nicole Kidman. Monkeymanman (talk) 17:39, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
I dont believe that minor awards should be included on any biography, if you do include them then where do you end. Even assuming consensus in support of our position could be reached, you'd still be left with having to decide what's "minor".
None of the awards were sourced to begin with Generally speaking, awards are sourced by pointing to the articles that list all of the awards. Now, it's true that Wikipedia article are normally not acceptable sources, but in my experience, this is a common practice with respect to awards because, practically speaking, the extra work is significant and, generally, unneeded. Even assuming, though, that Wikipedia articles are unacceptable sources in this context, you could have left the awards in and put in citation needed templates.
I have recently discussed this very subject with 2 other editors on Nicole Kidman Thanks for the pointer, but it's a very tiny discussion with very little real analysis of the issues.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:53, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Abraham Lincoln

The reference for this claim of relation to Abraham Lincoln is dubious. It seems genealogy as it relates to Abraham Lincoln past 2 generations isn't particularly clear; the closest information I can find regarded this shared heritage is http://www.genealogy.com/famousfolks/tomh/index.htm which makes a claim then doesn't actually provide a tree linking the two people (despite trees provided relevant to them independently). Another tree is presented in Steve Martin's speech at the ceremony for Tom Hank's AFI Lifetime Achievement in 2002 ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3KiSJqK2VA 2:41 in), and though this largely lines up with the previous link, it just seems odd considering the shallow depth of genealogy surrounding the 16th President of the United States. Yes, they both have a family name in common during a certain period, but can anyone show how they were related families? 58.96.89.110 (talk) 19:16, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

'In & Out' inspiration

Hi, There is a "citation needed" about whether Tom Hanks' acceptance speech directly inspired the film In & Out starring Kevin Kline.

"During his acceptance speech he revealed that his high school drama teacher Rawley Farnsworth and former classmate John Gilkerson, two people with whom he was close, were gay.[9] The revelation inspired the 1997 film In & Out, starring Kevin Kline as an English Literature teacher who is outed by a former student in a similar way.[citation needed]"

This Entertainment Weekly article, where one of the film's producers, Scott Rudin, describes coming up with the idea for the movie, should be a good citation:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,289642,00.html -Wgglass (talk) 22:47, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

It's an interesting cite, and the author of the article makes the connection, but it doesn't say that Hanks's speech actually affected the making of the movie. The assertion in the article still strikes me as WP:OR.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:26, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Saturday Night Live

I noticed that in the Television credits, Hanks is only cited once. This is a blatant error considering the fact that Hanks has hosted the show 10 times and is the first person to introduce the concept of the Five Timers Club (look it up!) Could someone please update this to give Mr. Hanks the proper credit? I don't think my Wiki skills are quite good enough yet. Thanks! Comeoncloser (talk) 04:46, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Within Perfect World's MMORPG Forsaken World Tom Hanks is featured. He, Lt. Dan, and various other characters from Hanks' movies are NPCs within a certain daily quest named "Run Boy Run", which is similar to the game's other quest named "Run Girl Run", but with a reference to Forrest Gump. Within the quest you are to follow him around for 30 legs, each of which are 40 meters long. I believe that this reference is worthy of being mentioned within a trivia section on Hanks' page. Proof: http://vendetta-fw.forumotion.com/t215-the-identity-of-hank and Google should suffice. 65.25.60.235 (talk) 22:27, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Personal life section and sources

I just deadlinked the reference to E Magazine in this section. I also looked at the first two sources (Guardian and US Weekly), and they conflict as to the years of his marriages. The Guardian says that he divorced Lewes and married Wilson in 1985, whereas US Weekly says he divorced Lewes in 1987 and married Wilson in 1988. Our article goes with the second source. This should be cleaned up.

I also see no sources in support of the second sentence of the first paragraph (how he and Wilson met).

I removed some unsourced (and not terribly important) information, including Lewes's maiden name and the sentence about her death. We can add back ini the maiden name with a source. I don't see how Lewes's death many years after the divorce is relevant to the Hanks article, even if it were sourced.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:57, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

wtf???

Hanks is one of several celebrities who frequently participates in planned comedy bits on Conan O'Brien's talk shows, including Late Night, The Tonight Show, and Conan while a guest. On one visit, Hanks asked O'Brien to join his run for president on the "Bad Haircut Party" ticket, with confetti and balloons and a hand held sign with the slogan "You'd be stupid to vote for us". On another episode, O'Brien, noting that Hanks was missing Christmas on his promotional tour, brought the season to him, including a gift (the skeleton of Hooch), and a mass of snow burying them both. On yet another episode, O'Brien gave Hanks a painting he had commissioned reflecting two of his interests: Astronauts landing on the beach at Normandy.[citation needed]

Subjective content

"Hanks then suffered a pile of box-office failures: The 'Burbs (1989)"

The Burbs was not an actual box-office failure by many globally accepted definitions of it, including our own wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_box_office_bombs, thus making the context here completely subjective. The box office took in 21 million more than the budget; hardly a box-office failure. Perhaps a better choice of words? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hiddukel1 (talkcontribs) 05:01, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Agreed. I've edited this to: "Hanks then suffered a run of box-office under-performers:..."
Which still isn't perfect by any means, but feels a bit less emotive. I'm afraid that I'm not about to go off and research each of those movies' takings to quantify their 'flops' status. Wayne 16:09, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry ... what were you trying to say?

There are two sections that I found confusing.

The first is under the heading "Progression into dramatic roles". In the first paragraph we read:

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hanks noted his "modern era of moviemaking ... because enough self-discovery has gone on.... My work has become less pretentiously fake and over the top". This "modern era" began in 1993 for Hanks ...

I have no idea what happened in that quote. Is that the whole quote? Maybe I'm missing something.

The second is the last two 'paragraphs' under the heading: "1996–present: Directing, producing and acting", where we find out:

He is ranked as the highest all time box office star with over $3.639 billion total box office gross, an average of $107 million per film.[50] He has been involved with seventeen films that grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office, the highest grossing of which was 2010's Toy Story 3.[51]
As of 2012, Hanks' films have grossed over $4.2 billion at the United States box office alone, and over $8.5 billion worldwide[2] making him the highest all time box office star.

Are those two sets of figures at odds with each other? I thought maybe the '2012' figures were an update on the earlier figures, but I'm not sure enough to make any changes.

On a different matter, while I was doing some copy-edits, I noticed that there were two usages of possesive apostrophes going on ... 6 uses of Hanks's and 15 of Hanks'. MOSS:POSS suggests that either can be used, but should be consistent. So I changed it to all Hanks'. (I did not change the usage in the references as for all I know the other usage may be in the source material.)

See also my addendum to the Post above titled "Subjective Content".

Typewriters

Per WP:NOTNEWS, I have re-removed the trivia about typewriters that Snuggums also removed today as trivia. Not everything that is covered by media is encyclopedic or worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia. -- WV 04:45, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm restoring a long standing paragraph that TonyTheTiger also tried to reinsert. NOTNEWS doesn't apply in this case at all. I suggest you read that page again if you think it does. Nor is it trivia, or else the NY Times wouldn't have covered this hobby. Edit: For those who are wondering, this is the content in question, which was added in March 2014. Calidum T|C 06:14, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
It absolutely does apply ("not all verifiable events are suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia"). That his collection of typewriters was part of a NYT article (Tony's reasoning that you claimed to agree with) is not reason enough to include it here. It's trivia, something out of Ripley's Believe It Or Not, and certainly not encyclopedic. I notice you are choosing to edit war over it and place bogus warnings on my talk page rather than discussing and waiting for consensus. I know of some IP and throw-away accounts/socks that do/have done the same. Who would have guessed you'd have that in common with those low-lifes? -- WV 06:29, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
  • I dropped in to read the article and improved the wording a bit. I'm puzzled by the intense opposition to the paragraph about Hanks' interest in typewriters, as covered by the NYT. I think it adds to the article, find it notable, and add my voice to support of it. Attempts to argue against inclusion appear strained and fail to convince me. Jusdafax 06:42, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
Coverage by a single article in a single publication doesn't make something notable. Bop or Tiger Beat (I'm not a 13-year-old anymore, so these references may be out of date) publish articles identifying what Nick Carter's or Ricky Martin's (ditto) favorite color or sportball team or TV show is, but that generally isn't considered encyclopedic information. We all have hobbies; Tom Hanks' are no more noteworthy than mine or yours. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 01:49, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
To me, that's precisely what the typewriter content has always appeared to be comparable to: something out of a fan magazine or found at a fan site, JasonAQuest. I believe Snuggums was correct in removing it back in July. -- WV 02:15, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
It's more than just one article in the NY Times. Hanks has released an app about typewriters and is working on a book featuring short stories involving his collection. This has been covered by numerous reliable sources, including: The Telegraph Chicago Sun-Times Time magazine CNN NPR CBS BBC The New Yorker The Independent Variety International Business Times and The Guardian, for starters. Calidum T|C 04:45, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
  • Given the wealth of sources provided by Calidum, and the depth of Hanks' interest in this topic, I suggest we restore and expand the original mention per the weight supporters have demonstrated. Jusdafax 05:14, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
I'd say it warrants a mention as context for that upcoming book. (See? Citing sources is much more effective at establishing notability than posting "IS SO!" comments on a Talk page.) -Jason A. Quest (talk) 13:42, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
As well, Citing sources is the best way to convince others, rather than saying "Is so!" and edit warring to WP:WIN. Why the sources weren't provided previously is beyond me. -- WV 16:32, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
  • Seeing that we all agree it should be included, I added a new paragraph to the "other activities" section and removed the typewriter mention from personal life. Calidum T|C 03:37, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

I will start the review today. I'm likely to be slow with this review. If you think I'm too slow, please let me know as soon as possible. I'm an extremely slow reviewer but my aim is always to pass rather than fail; I would rather push to improve an article than simply fail the review. I will normally help with minor improvement rather than listing them here. Anything more significant than minor improvements, I will raise here. I see the reviewer's role as collaborative and collegiate, so I welcome discussion regarding interpretation of the GA criteria. Wikigyt@lk to M£ 20:03, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

General comments

I think a good article under a subject like this should have a filmography table. The table should follow the format; Year - Title - Role - Note - Source. Where "Year" is the year of the film's release date. Please see MOS:YEAR. "Title" is the title of the work. "Role" is the role played by Tom as it is written and presented in the credits of the work. Both "Note" and "Source" sections are optional. The "Note" section may include additional information such as medium, episode titles, or awards while the "source" section should be used when the role or the work itself may be obscure or difficult to verify. See Kate Beckinsale. Wikigyt@lk to M£ 15:22, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Affair

I hesitate to bring it up, and I won't put it in until it has been discussed, but why does the article not acknowledge that he cheated on his first wife (Lewes) with Wilson? They began their affair in 1985, Hanks didn't divorce Lewes until 1987. As far as sources, in the June 2006 Esquire he stated,

"Rita and I just looked at each other and - kaboing - that was that.

"I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn't be denied."

Commenting on the affair, he adds, "Well, yeah, I did happen to be married at the time. And there's nothing to celebrate about that."

The divorce was rather nasty for it's day, and Hanks had his first two children with Lewes as well. I realize people want to think that Hanks is perfect, and don't get me wrong, he's far and away my favorite actor and one of the greatest guys in Hollywood hands down, but that doesn't mean his mistakes should be overlooked. Vyselink (talk) 22:36, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Is the reason for the divorce relevant to the article? The BLP says 'Biographies of living persons ("BLPs") must be written conservatively and with regard for the subject's privacy. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not Wikipedia's job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives; the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment.' Could it be perceived as sensationalism? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.191.184.219 (talk) 03:43, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Tom Hanks is the Chair of the Hidden Heroes Campaign, launched by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. This campaign is to bring awareness and support to the 5.5 million spouses, mothers, fathers, siblings and other loved ones across America are facing enormous challenges every day caring for members of the military and gravely injured veterans.  Not done. This seems subjective and the source you gave is a primary one that only seems self serving. First Lord of Downing Street 18:09, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

It isn't self serving though and feel free to verify directly with Mr. Hanks about his participation and work.

Listing Tom Hanks children

The article currently states Hanks has four kids "including Colin Hanks." Despite the fact that Colin is famous, shouldn't we either name all the Hanks children or just list the total number of 4, like Sam Walton, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. or even Mitt Romney? I'm just asking about consistency. X4n6 (talk) 06:14, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Under the section "Other Activities" add that Tom Hanks has frequently crashed weddings. In 2016, Hanks crashed Elizabeth and Ryan's wedding in Central Park in New York City, USA. In 1993, Hanks crashed a wedding while filming Forest Gump. Hanks also became an ordained minister to officiate actress Allison Williams' wedding in 2015.

Films in lede

I reduced the number of films he is "known for" in the lede, leaving 11, which I think is sufficient. He is not best known for the three recent films, and certainly not for Sully, which only opened a month ago. He is known for the films that have been around for several years and which have gained a great deal of respect and recognition. Let's restrain the urge to add our favorite Hanks film to the lede. ---The Old JacobiteThe '45 14:21, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Minor grammatical edit

Career section > International recognition (2000-2009) > 5th paragraph

“In the comedy-drama film The Great Buck Howard (2008), Hanks played the on-screen father of a young man (played by Hanks' real-life son, Colin) who chooses to work as road manager for a fading mentalist (John Malkovich).”

Recommend adding “the”, changing “who chooses to work as road manager” to “who chooses to work as the road manager”. Minor point, but grammatically correct I believe.

Minor grammatical edit

Personal life > 5th paragraph

“Hanks is a descendant of former president Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. Hanks is the third cousin, four times removed of former president and his link comes through the president’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln (1784 – 1818).”

Recommend adding “the”, and changing "of" to "from", thus changing “four times removed of former president” to “four times removed from the former president”. Minor point, but grammatically correct I believe.

Hello, Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors so I think it's great that you chose to review an article about him. It is a great article already so i just suggest that you add maybe more information about his personal life, or in other parts that don't have much information. you can also summarize points that weren't mentioned in the articles lead. Hope everything goes well.

Education

The infobox as it stands strongly implies that Hanks has a degree in fine arts; the article states that he dropped out before completing his degree.

My thought is that the two colleges currently listed in the "alma mater" parameter should be moved to "education", and the reference to the degree removed (which should be added to the body); this should make it look less like he completed the degree.

The doc for {{Infobox person}} suggests that when there's no actual degree granted, it's "usually not relevant to include either parameter", but also suggests "article talk page consensus may conclude otherwise", so here I am. Should they stay or should they go?--NapoliRoma (talk) 21:03, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

His "filmmaker" occupation should be changed from "filmmaker" to "director, producer and screenwriter" and in the first sentence of the article too, from "is an American actor and filmmaker" to "is an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter". Because it would be more helpful for readers to understand what else he does for filmmaking in movies instead of just having "filmmaker" as an occupation. 50.78.30.101 (talk) 20:47, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Tom Hanks is not a comedian, his comedian occupation needs to be removed and fixed back to “actor and filmmaker” again. Because another user added that in his occupation and in the short description section above the article a while back, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tom_Hanks&diff=prev&oldid=998513033. His career section says nothing about him doing comedy or stand-up comedy throughout his career, therefore it needs to be removed right away. Thin lead

If you take out the puff (accolades) and his works (film, television, theatre) what remains of the lead is exactly this:

Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born 1956) is an American actor and filmmaker.

This is hardly a satisfying lead in my books, and fails to summarize anything at all from the rest of the article concerning his personal life, his training, his politics, his financial situation, or his activities apart from acting. — MaxEnt 21:04, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

COVID-19 section

I don't think the COVID-19 section is WP:LASTING. The exception is the last line, regarding their donation of antibodies. There isn't really a better place in the article for that statement, however, nor is there much more information about those donations. I have been trying to add to the caption of Hanks' photo where he was when it was taken (The 2019 Toronto International Film Festival) but this continually gets taken down. I believe that it is necessary information as people may not want to click on the photo to find out where he is.
