uitenhage has the oldest mosque in south africa called masjid al qudama

The spelling pronunciations and IPA were a complete mismatch. Can someone verify? kwami (talk) 22:53, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No idea, but [øjtənˈhɑːxə] was probably meant to be [œytənˈhɑːxə], given orthographic "ui". Lfh (talk) 21:30, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There are two commonly used pronunciations in South Africa for this town name, an Afrikaans pronunciation and an English one. Though each is more commonly use in their respective languages, both occasionally gets used when speaking Afrikaans or English. Unfortunately my knowledge of IPA is far to limited to provide examples. --NJR_ZA (talk) 22:34, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This YouTube movie contains the English version spoken by two different speakers --NJR_ZA (talk) 23:22, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link. The article does already have both English and Afrikaans pronunciations, and the English one is consistent with that video, so I'll remove the "dubious" tag. Lfh (talk) 12:47, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Re. Afrikaans - the Afrikaans article gives [a] for orthographic "a". But that would just be guessing on my part, which is why I didn't remove the tag initially. Let's trust the article and change it to that. Lfh (talk) 13:02, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at IPA chart for English dialects and keeping in mind my lack of IPA knowledge, I think it is more like [a:] than [a] in Afrikaans. Actually, it is like the "aa" in Afrikaans. The "a" is a longer sound and the "e" at then end is silent. Will see if I can possibly get an online link--NJR_ZA (talk) 13:38, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Official renaming to Kariega

[edit]

In terms of WP:OFFICIAL and WP:COMMONNAME, the name should not be changed until it is consistently reflected in WP:RS. Wikipedia should not be used to promote a new place name, but to reflect its existing usage. It isn't a place for advocacy, or to establish "facts on the ground" WP:SOAP.
