Use of the word ‘oblast’

[edit]

Articles on oblasts overuse this word which is not a natural English expression. It seems almost fetishistic. Just because this word is used in other languages doesn’t mean it has to be used throughout Wikipedia articles any more than we would slavishly call Chinese provinces 省 or shěng throughout an article. Where it helps avoid confusion it makes sense to use it, but not in every reference. --☸ Moilleadóir 03:13, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This was addressed on multiple occasions in the past. The word "oblast" is a loanword in English (something which "shěng" is not), so there is no real reason to avoid using it, especially considering that the big picture requires precision (comparable English counterparts like "province" or "region" are often too ambiguous) and that anyone interested in Russian divisions is going to encounter this term sooner rather than later outside of Wikipedia anyway. The term should, of course, be wikilinked on the first use.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); September 2, 2014; 12:59 (UTC)

Disruptive editing

[edit]

I've imposed protection on this article since there are numerous problems with the recent addition by an IP, and the IP seems more interested in accusing everyone of vandalism and reverting than in listening. If there are any productive comments to be made, please post them in this section.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); July 2, 2015; 17:37 (UTC)
