Maitland Armstrong

[edit]

Maitland Armstrong

Created by Philafrenzy (talk), Edwardx (talk). Nominated by Edwardx (talk) at 19:54, 7 July 2014 (UTC).

  • Alt1 ... that the grandfathers of Maitland Armstrong (pictured) and his wife both fought at the Battle of Yorktown, but on opposite sides? Philafrenzy (talk) 20:01, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
His wife fought against his grandfathers? Go, girl! I think to make it clear you'd need to spell it out more.
Belle, this was really funny. EEng (talk) 03:58, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Alt2 ... that the grandfather of Maitland Armstrong (pictured) and the grandfather of his wife fought on opposite sides at the Battle of Yorktown?
Alt3 ... that Maitland Armstrong's (pictured) grandfather fought against his wife's grandfather at the Battle of Yorktown?
Alt3 is only true in the general "sides" sense (not the hand-to-hand sense) and has the unfortunate possessive 's before (pictured) but I think if the picture was lost this would be the more hooky of the hooks. Belle (talk) 14:18, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Alt4 ... that Maitland Armstrong (pictured) and his wife each had a grandfather who fought at Battle of Yorktown, though on opposite sides? EEng (talk) 23:06, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

@EEng: Date, size, refs, hook are all ok. I do wonder if a more interesting ALT couldn't be proposed - something about the subject's life, rather then his grandparents? Something about 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle or his stained glass works would probably be more catching. If you could propose an ALT hook, ping me and I'll check it out. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:33, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Actually, I kind of like the Montague-Capulet aspect of the grandfathers, but here's another

ALT6 that as Director of American Fine Arts at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris, stained-glass artist Maitland Armstrong (pictured) showed former US President Ulysses S. Grant around the Exposition?

I'm guessing that Exposition Universelle goes in italics, and that "Paris" isn't part of the actual name, but perhaps others know better. EEng (talk) 14:52, 25 July 2014 (UTC) ping!

It's like 1964 New York World's Fair (so it doesn't look like he is mumbling to himself about something unconnected to the suggestion, I should say that I've changed EEng's hook). I like the family feud aspect too; I don't like this latest hook as it repeats Exposition and and mentions Armstrong's crystalline composition which is cruel as all he really wants is to be a real flesh-and-blood boy. Belle (talk) 15:57, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
First of all, Belle, with your froggish name I'd think you understand that Exposition Universelle goes in italics (at least, I think it does) because it's an expression étrangère. And glass isn't a crystal, it's a non-crystalline amorphous solid, so there! :P EEng (talk) 16:23, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
D'abord, c'est un titre, comme Champs-Élysées ou "Je t'aime". Secondly, obviously I know glass is a nun chrysalis time amphora solid, but how was I to know you would? Belle (talk) 17:09, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
Belle, by "nun chrysalis" I guess you mean this. It's interesting to note, by the way, that that wiktionary entry has both nun and entomology sections!! EEng (talk) 19:11, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
Why was my Alt5 removed? Here it is again:
Alt5 "... that Maitland Armstrong (pictured) showed U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant around the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle and was awarded the Légion d'honneur for his work there?" Philafrenzy (talk) 21:24, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
Apparently my fault -- not intentional. EEng (talk) 22:58, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
ALT5 is better than ALT6. (that's a bit concise for me, I'd better add some pointless aside in parentheses) Belle (talk) 09:55, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm fine with ALT5. EEng (talk) 14:37, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Piotrus, check out ALT5 (all the best people say it is fine, don't get left behind with the uncool kids) Belle (talk) 14:49, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

I agree ALT5 is the best. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:56, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
