University of Maryland userbox replacement

[edit]

The former userbox having a photo of "Testudo" at McKeldin Library has been replaced with this one, for several reasons:

  • "Testudo" sculpture photo usage is subject to Speedy Delete as a copyvio.
  • the oversized userbox didn't fit standard Wikipedia userbox dimensions
  • this userbox is more generic of the entire Univ-Md. system, not just the College Park campus
  • the University of Md.'s official logo features a stylized version of the Maryland state flag – by using only the public domain state flag in this new userbox, we have a symbolic representation of the university without any copyright infringement.  –  JGHowes 16:51, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Category and template don't completely jive

[edit]

I can certainly appreciate the spirit of making the userbox applicable to the entire system, but the category it feeds into specifies just UMCP. Consistency should probably be maintained, and I would argue that since the individual parts of the system usually refer to themselves as separate, it would make more sense for those schools to get individual userboxes and make this one just for College Park. --fuzzy510 16:58, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

UMD discussion copied from Education/United States

[edit]
  • Fuzzy510 has changed this Userbox as a "Disambiguation" (see "Current userbox", above left), contrary to the discussion here. I've invited him to join this talk here, so that the right hand knows what the left is doing. I object to Fuzzy510's change. JGHowes talk - 17:04, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like his changes have been reverted. --NThurston 17:58, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So I see. In a comment he made at Template talk:user UMD, he said that the "Category and template don't completely jive" because "the category it feeds into specifies just UMCP". I don't see that or know what it means, nor how to fix it - do you? JGHowes talk - 22:55, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is another similar issue with CUNY. That solution would be to create a category for University of Maryland, then each school UMCP, UMB, UMBC, etc. could have their own categories as sub-cats. As for the userbox, I am ok with one box for UMD, and another for each of the specific schools, including UMCP. You guys are welcome to go ahead and fix it. --NThurston 20:55, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
