Mestreet Tilvin Silva (Sinhala: ටිල්වින් සිල්වා, Tamil: டில்வின் சில்வா; born 27 November 1962) is a Sri Lankan politician who is the General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)[1] and NPP founding member.[2] Silva has played a significant role in shaping the JVP's policies and strategies, particularly focusing on social justice, anti-corruption, and economic reforms.[3] Silva has been described as one the closet allies of the president Anura Kumara Dissanayake.[4]

Early life

[edit]

Tilvin Silva was born as the eldest of a family of five with three brothers and one sister on 27 November 1962 in Mullapitiya, Beruwala, Kalutara District. His father was a woodworker near the town of Beruwala. In 1981, Silva started working at a tourist hotel in Moragalla before the start of the Sri Lanka Civil War.[5]

He was educated at Kande Vihara Vidyalaya, Beruwala Mangala Privena and Aluthgama Maha Vidyalaya.[6]

Political career

[edit]

Silva joined JVP in 1979 at age 17. Silva's political career is marked by his involvement in the JVP's transition from a revolutionary movement to a mainstream political party. The JVP, initially known for its armed uprisings in 1987-1989,[7] has since embraced democratic politics. In 1987, Silva served as a member of the JVP student group that attacked J. R. Jayawardana's regime; he received a 20-year prison sentence and spent seven years in prison as a result.[8] After Rohana Wijeweera's assassination, Tillvin Silva became the leader of the JVP Youth on November 28, 1989. After release from prison, Silva became the new General Secretary of JVP in 1995.[9] Under Silva's leadership, the party has focused on advocating for socialist policies, anti-imperialism, and left-wing nationalism.[10]
