[edit]The Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) is one of the eight institutes of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), a leading research organization in Greece. It is located in Rethymno, Crete, and focuses on the study of Mediterranean history, culture, and archaeology.
History
[edit]The IMS was established in 1985[1] as a center for advanced research in the humanities and social sciences, with an emphasis on the Mediterranean region. Since its inception, it has grown to become a highly respected institute both in Greece and internationally. It is distinguished for its research in history and culture and is the only research or university institution in the country to have been awarded nine ERC Grants (2016, 2017[2][3], 2018[4], 2019[5], 2023[6][7], 2024[8][9]) ever awarded to the humanities in Greece.
Mission
[edit]The mission of the IMS is to promote research in the humanities, social sciences, as well as the application of science and technology on cultural heritage and the environment.
Research Areas
[edit]To date, its research focuses on three research axes, 1) Mediterranean History, 2) Mediterranean culture, 3) Geoinformatics technology for Culture and Environment, and is undertaken by eleven teams of researchers based in the Institution’s research sections, centers, and labs.
Research Projects
[edit]The Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas is the only Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in Greece with 9 ERC funded projects.
Collaborations
[edit]The Institute of Mediterranean Studies has concluded Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with foreign and Greek Universities in programs and activities that promote science through collaborations.
These collaborations include:
- Collaboration on ongoing or new research and academic programs.
- Cooperation between the research teams and laboratories of the Institutions. Development of joint research activities, transfer of know-how.
- Exchange / mutual visits university members and research community (faculty and researchers of all levels, postdoctoral researchers as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students) in order to promote scientific research and teaching.
- Joint organization of scientific or research activities (e.g. conferences, workshops, lectures, summer school events, etc.)
- Joint publications / announcements and submission of research proposals.

Publications
[edit]The institute produces a range of publications including monographs, conference proceedings, and articles in major academic journals. It also supports open-access platforms for the dissemination of its research findings.
Facilities
[edit]The IMS is located in a historic building in the Old Town of Rethymno, Crete. The institute has modern facilities, including specialized libraries, archives, and laboratories.
Leadership
[edit]The current director of the IMS is Professor Gelina Harlaftis[10][11], professor of maritime history at the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete.
