King, Queen, Knave (Russian: Король, дама, валет) is a novel by Russian expatriate author Vladimir Nabokov. The first Russian edition was published in 1928. The first English translation, prepared by the author and his son Dmitri Nabokov, was published in 1968.

Plot

Franz Bubendorf, a German provincial in his early twenties, departs his home to work for his uncle in Berlin. Disgusted by the monstrous appearance of a fellow third-class passenger, Franz commits the first of many extravagances in upgrading his ticket to second-class, where he shares a car with a couple. He eavesdrops on them while fantasizing about the woman. This couple is Kurt and Martha Dreyer, who are in fact Franz's uncle and aunt. This is the first of many coincidences that shape the theme of the novel as well as it plot. In their conversation, Dreyer is revealed as a mischievous and perhaps somewhat irresponsible man (though he is very wealthy), while Martha is rather cold and enjoys frustrating the more playful instincts of her husband. The reader is also exposed to one of Franz's most important characteristics: he is fastidious, squeamish even, to the point of weakness. Franz and the Dreyers all complete the trip back to Berlin without learning that they are, in fact, related.

Franz settles into a hotel, anticipating an evening of exploration in the great city. It is not to be, for he breaks his glasses while washing up and is rendered nearly blind. Thus, he must make the all-important visit to the Dreyers' nearly blind. By this turn of events, he
