Don't go

[edit]

If it is a wikibreak, no deserved it better than your good self. If it is retiring from here, you'll really make me feel like Padmini here. The website will be a bit, nay a lot, less bright and interesting to work on.  — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 00:54, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Ssven2 is right. The Infobox dispute has forced some really good editors to bid adieu. I cannot force you to stay back if you are retiring, but can surely ask you to reconsider your decision. As always, its yours say. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 02:38, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
I'm not going, don't worry haha. Just need a break for a week or two! But running these contests is really very time consuming so I'm spending more time on here daily than I would in off months. Though all of the contestants are great, after a longish period on here witnessing so much trouble elsewhere on the site who just don't know how to interact and put issues aside in favour of building an encyclopedia it can get pretty exasperating. There is some big time bullying going on on here every day and a lot of socially inept people. A lot of people here react differently to most people I know in real life, who would rather make the effort to patch things up instead of being hostile if there's a problem. I'm the same, I'd rather be on good terms with people and move forward constructively instead of dwelling on things. The only way I can deal with wikipedia and remain healthy/positive nowadays is to take regular breaks as it's really a toxic environment to work in. So many are really missing the point of this. Fortunately all my contestants and contributors to the 10,000 challenge have their heads screwed on and are here to build an encyclopedia and have some focus on what matters. I think the next contest will be more a two week one, do them in two week bursts and take regular breaks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:27, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Some of the Indian cinema editors have been quiet of late. At one time there was old movies up for GAN every week! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:19, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Happy to know that. But, i would certainly miss the "Blofeld" image with a piranha tank for admins, the archives box, and "Less active than previously" notice. And, coming to GANs, here was one for the August 2016 backlog elimination drive, nominated by me. If i can write anything else for the B&W era, i hope you would not be rejecting the request. After all, We mostly made offers you could not refuse! ;-) Pavanjandhyala (talk) 14:39, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Take the time you need to do good for yourself! The question of how to address the toxicity is a legitimate and long-term problem that crosses many areas of Wikipedia. I've found that there are several quite toxic cesspools on WP and even the nice "neighborhoods" of WP can suffer spills from time to time. I sometimes wonder if world events to some extent also taint the atmosphere in many places-- and if so, WP is not immune (I'm noticing some of my colleagues in RL seem less prone to reasonableness lately too, and often over silly nonsense). Montanabw(talk) 19:17, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

I think a shortish break every two weeks is roughly needed nowadays! My break will commence on the 5th after the contest closes!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:29, 2 September 2016 (UTC) @Ssven2: and @Pavanjandhyala:, would either of you be interested in an Indian cinema contest and an overall 10,000 Challenge for India? If so comments at Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics, goes for other Indian editors who see this too. You could have state contests and one for Indian cinema to all go towards it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:50, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Interesting idea. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 13:08, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, fixing up this page looks like a MAJOR undertaking which I'm not prepared to take on right now. I've never visited the city, either. I prefer doing short projects like the nightclubs we've been doing. Did you see my new pages that came up as topics in the course of my research, Kentucky Avenue Renaissance Festival and Wash's Restaurant? Yoninah (talk) 21:08, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Understood. Yeah it would need a lot of work. I just thought it would be better to overhaul it than add a great section and leave the rest utter crap! Hadn't seen those articles!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:42, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Percentage tube

[edit]

I noticed your request at VPT and realised that there doesn't seem to be a vertical progress bar - like the "thermometer" that fundraisers use. I've made a basic one for you if you need one in the future at Template:Thermometer - it can be customised easily if needed. Keep well and don't let things get you down. You can pick things up anytime you feel refreshed and want to get back into editing. All the best --RexxS (talk) 21:26, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, I think the large one I made for Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge fits well horizontally across the top though! A vertical one might work better during one of the contests with reaching a target towards the bottom or something.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:41, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Doc, I'm posting this here in the event that you or your page stalkers can help. Beatrice Isabel Jones is pretty fascinating, clearly an important early nurse in England. Bonhams sold several of her medals and though I was able to track 3 in The London Gazette, I found no mention of her British War Medal and Victory Medals there. Where else would one look? I was also intrigued by two of the memorials made to her after her death. One was for being first matron at the All Saints Royal Garrison Church Hospital. The church Royal Garrison Church, Aldershot has an article, but the hospital does not. I find no mention of her service at such a hospital either, only the plaque. The other is a special memorial made by Queen Alexandra to Jones for being the first matron of the Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital. Again, no other reference to her service there was found. I'm curious if documents exist on your side of the pond? SusunW (talk) 17:04, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Haha, in a lot of cases access to some sources is as bad as in Mexico, the US is always better on google! Perhaps We hope could help?♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:08, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Will have to pick this up later. Tomorrow's a holiday here (Labor Day) and some places won't be open then but are open today. Need to take care of some things in RL first. :-) We hope (talk) 17:17, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
I would also love a picture, but paging through individual pages on the British Journal of Nursing [link] is tedious. Only found a few volumes in Wayback archives which could actually be searched, so I went page by page through several years. That's how I found her obit. Google was zero help on this one. SusunW (talk) 17:26, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
@SusunW: does this image help? Her medals. Yoninah (talk) 15:02, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
Yoninah How would I load it? Photos are not my area of expertise. I'd love to use the photos of her medals, but can we do that? Would it be fair use? Also the memorial plaque would be great, but again, under what licensing? Glad to hear from you, hope all is well. SusunW (talk) 15:08, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
@SusunW: ask We hope, who's really knowledgeable about these things. Best, Yoninah (talk) 17:38, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld, this Good Article reassessment—of an article that Nvvchar originally developed with you back in 2010—was recently resumed after 15 months of inaction. Nvvchar had done an initial round of edits to address the issues raised, but has unfortunately retired in the interim.

As best I can determine, there are still broadness issues inherent in the article's contents and structure. (I'm dubious about the new addition of weather data from a town 33 km distant and twice the elevation of Deogarh, and there is still no information about areas typical to such articles, such as education.)

It may be that the article will not ever have such information, which would militate against it being a true GA—indeed, you said as much in the original GA review, Talk:Deogarh, Uttar Pradesh/GA1, when you posted, A good article about a settlement as opposed to an archaeologicial site or temple is supposed to be well balanced with a comprehensive overivew of all the main topics, and added that you would probably not have nominated the article.

Do you have any advice? Or would you be able to address the still-outstanding issues? I could post to the various WikiProjects as well, if you think the article has potential to meet the GA criteria. Thanks for any thoughts you may have, or assistance you can give. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:01, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi. I think if there's still a lot of issues it would be best to delist. Just a quick look at it it doesn't seem GA quality to me. I will miss Nvv dearly but he 's always known my opinion on a lot of the Hindu architectural content he's written. It's often difficult to read or understand.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:05, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your advice. I have closed the reassessment and delisted the article. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:32, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Eleonore Büning

[edit]

On 11 September 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Eleonore Büning, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Eleonore Büning wrote in the FAZ that Patrice Chéreau's staging of the Jahrhundertring revolutionised the understanding of Wagner in Germany? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Eleonore Büning. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Eleonore Büning), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. I understand your issues with "Grant da gay", but the problem was your approach and thinking there should be no mention whatsoever of the accusations in the article. Because there was a massive amount of coverage that makes it legitimiate to at least report that he was accused. But it does have to be carefully worded and structured, which the original article and this new editor's additions are not.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:08, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

Ikiru

[edit]

Finally watched the film. Now, i too wish to sit on a swing in a park nearby my house and hum some old songs. Sadly, there is no such place. Having said that, Ikiru is a brilliant film. Films with concepts of self-explorations (like Anbe Sivam and The Intouchables) tend to go too drab sometimes, and i really wonder why Ikiru isn't like that despite featuring a lead who awaits his death and ignored by his people. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 05:20, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

Glad you liked it Pavan, but it was a film you should have seen long ago haha!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:32, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

My friend received DVDs of Ikiru, Rashomon, and Seven Samurai as gifts from a Kurosawa fan. He recently told about that, and i borrowed it. Really pleasant experience. Should watch it again before returning it. :) Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:38, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
Pleasant experience?.. I long for them on here, all of the time. Sometimes I just want to give people a big hug and just pull a funny face at somebody to make them smile and tell them everything is cool, but it never happens like that ;-). Glad you enjoyed them, they're superb films. Floating Weeds is another "good egg" as Ssven would call it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:43, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
Watching Ikiru again; it was pleasant, wasn't it. I agree that films with death and self-exploration turn too heavy to handle, like Anbe Sivam (Kamal Haasan was consistent throughout, however). But this one; it too starts tragically (like the old pair's situation in Tokyo Story) and slowly turns into a beautiful saga. Simpler scenes and very normal things appear to be very enchanting. Floating Weeds and Make Way for Tomorrow up next. Should complete them soon. And yes, Wikipedia needs something pleasant, but hugging may not be possible virtually ;-p Pavanjandhyala (talk) 13:59, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

MarnetteD thinks very highly of Make Way for Tomorrow, not just me, the last half hour in particular are wonderful and quite similar to Ikiru in theme.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:05, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

I remember Ssven2 praising the film recently. I have asked my sister to rent its DVD as she too was eager to watch it. So, in all likelihood, i may end up watching Make Way for Tomorrow first. I also recommend you to watch Shah Rukh Khan's recent outing, Fan. I and Ssven2 find Fan a really good film, and i hope you too would like its meta-portions. Or, you can try Baazigar. Somewhat louder and dramatic, but SRK's cold-blooded anti-heroic act is just unbeatable, even today. Its here with subs for free. Make a choice and let me know. Cheers! @Nedim Ardoğa:, haha 20 is too much, check out Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge we're currently at 1906 and still not archived, when we hit 2000! ;-) Up to you, if happier listing on a subpage go for it, but I thinki some people like having a list on the main page itself and increases the likelihood of people seeing it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:15, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Quality by subject matter

[edit]

Please see User:Smallbones/core prelims. This is pretty rough, but I think all that is really needed. I only got the scores for the first 303 of the 1000 article random sample that I've been using. The lowest average weighed sum ORES scores are in the areas of

  • Biology Medicine and Health (BHM) - all those species
  • Eastern Hemisphere geography
    • But note that Western Hemisphere geography is almost the top!
  • And Women's bios in general

I'll attribute the poor scores on Women's bios to a lack of source material. The BHM problem is definitely all those species - but we do have to ask "is this really a problem?" or one that we can do anything about? The geography problem is more interesting and something we can do something about. I believe it is really a difference between native English speaking countries' geo articles, and non-native English speaking countries. The US, UK, Canada, etc. geo articles all have somebody interested in the articles, small updates happen all the time, so the articles gradually get better. It's probably the same in France, Germany, etc. but the articles get better on FR-Wiki, DE-Wiki, etc., not on EN-Wiki. There's definitely a project waiting in that set of "facts". Smallbones(smalltalk) 20:28, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Looks good Smallbones! But a key would help, what's SOC and CA? Culture and Arts I guess, SOC? How is the quality score calculated? It's potentially very useful if you could run that on every article and subject and come up with a top 100 list or something of subjects with the lowest average quality needing the most work. You can then propose contests to start developing them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:35, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

What do you think ...

... about this FAC, - closed soon if nobody volunteers? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:54, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

It's Henga's responsibility, not mine or anybody else's. I wouldn't dream of taking over on an article I've not even slightly contributed to.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:14, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

I took over many articles of users who left, especially Kafka, but would not dream to take over a FAC on a topic I don't know well enough. I took over Emma Ayres from GFHandel (quite a success on the German Main page), - see now. Can we say "he was born" when the babies mother thought she was born. Seems not historical to me, see talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:19, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
I see that "was born" was adapted, but still "he graduated" while a girl graduated, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:22, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Well Ian has archived now anyway so too late.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:23, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Just saw that. How about the other, - are you familiar with bios of that kind? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:27, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
I am happy about content recognition of an unusual kind, resulting in an article in German. I knew the subject, on a respectful last-name-level. No contact in recent years, then the unprepared message of his death which prompted my first article of 2016 which appeared on DYK for the 15th Wikipedia anniversary. I love the way my singing idea for a memorial was accepted. - Thank you for all you do for content! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:57, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
Can't thank you enough for your excellent and thorough review of Portsmouth! It got just what it needed, and without your productivity and patience it could never have been promoted in the end. It only took me six years. Thank you! JAGUAR  19:48, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

You've put in an enormous amount of work on it, which deserves respect. It's certainly much improved! It still needs a fair bit of work in places to improve the flow. There's still a valid point on the "bittiness", but I overall you cover what needs to be covered for GA. I will try to help work on the prose when I can.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:59, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks! I'd like to get it to FA as I have to make good use of the books, but I couldn't have got it to GA without them. The good thing is that all of the sources check out now. I'll probably submit a peer review once it's copyedited by myself and/or others before taking it to FA. JAGUAR  11:54, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

An award for you!

The Reviewer Barnstar
For the patience and perseverance you have shown while reviewing Portsmouth for almost a month. Definitely not an easier task. Its contributor has just been awarded by me. It would be incomplete if someone like you are left unaddressed when such a difficult task is accomplished. Yours Truly, Pavanjandhyala (talk) 05:38, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

Thankyou friend. Articles are there to be improved. Jaguar has put in a huge effort to improve the Portsmouth article and the article overall is a great improvement on the original. If there are still issues with it which need ironing out let's move forward and resolve them and try to see it at FA level by the end of the year.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:02, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

Reviewer

[edit]

Hello

I have been wondering whether you would have 1 or 2 people to suggest to review the articles related to Nigeria contest (not you since you wrote some of those :)). Perhaps from former reviewers of previous contests ? Thanks Anthere (talk)

Hello Anthere. Do you mean for Good Article status like I'm currently reviewing for Geography of Somerset, or do you mean to help judge the contest? I certainly have a few people who could check over work, yes, but let me know what you want exactly. Still intend to do a few more articles on Nigerian, I was hoping yto get Joke Silva up to GA status but got stalled as I couldn't find much more!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:36, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

I meant help to judge the contest. Much easier than reviewing an article to get to GA ! Anthere (talk)

I see, I dunno. I'm not sure exactly what they're looking for to judge the contest, I gather it's quality and consistency they value the most, but it is always tricky to judge a contest where there's not a criteria defined. If it was a bit clearer what contestants would have to do to win then I think it would be easier to get some more people to help judge it. This is why I tend to either use a points system or article/GA count system as it can be very difficult to judge things as writing contests on wikipedia and decide who the best editor is, as people can do different types of important work, from decent basic starts on important missing articles, to cleaning up core entries etc. And in cases like Fisayo Ajisola, where the end result is a collaboration between me and Pastorflex, it's not easy to see who has done what, it's the product which matters the most! Perhaps Casliber or Jmilburn could offer some help, but I think they would also want something a bit more rigid to be able to assess entries!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:24, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

When I was running the Wikipedia:Stub Contest, it was mainly about expansion. As long as the expanded article was not a copyvio, sourced and faithful to sources, it was ok - I was not classing it as a quality contest like the Wikipedia:The Core Contest. I am happy to judge if no-one else volunteers. I'd actually like to enter but might not get round to it (like all the Wales and UK articles I was gonna write..) Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 14:21, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
The only thing that is a bit tricky is the "body of work/quality" prize, but that is not a huge problem. I'd be thinking of judging it like core contest. so not hard. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 14:56, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Re: Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon

[edit]

My dear Evil Doctor, I knew this project, & considered contributing to it, however demands on my time prevent me from doing more than what I've taken on at the moment. One of the greatest threats to keeping long-term Wikipedians active is small children: until they reach the age of five, their demands for attention will suck an amazing amount of their parent's free time. Maybe in three years I will be able to contribute more than the feeble efforts I am managing now. But I appreciate that you remember my efforts in this area, & maybe some day I will return to Ethiopian articles. (There are many ancient churches in that country worthy of coverage.) Until then, I will content myself with working on one article about unfashionable dead white men; perhaps I may even be able to push it to FA status. But until our next exchange, be good & take care. -- llywrch (talk) 07:09, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi Dr. Blofeld do spaces count as Characters when referring to a stub? Also can we only sign up for one country or region when doing it? Thanks. Inter&anthro (talk) 02:44, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

@Inter&anthro: Hi, thanks for your interest. Not sure on the space, try something you've written and paste the prose into that tool and you'll see what the reading will be. I tend to think more in kb size rather than char count but it's the same. Yes of course, the exciting thing about this is that you can enter articles for any of the 55 countries and potentially win the max $1100 ;-), and then there's all the bonus prizes for doing certain ones!.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:43, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

I didn't call anybody names, I'm trying to ignore what is going on and not get involved because I'm wonderfully polite and civil, right Richard? ;-). But when you turn up and ignore consensus and that start a thread on "let's add an infobox", given the history of this sort of thing on wikipedia it's just looking for trouble and comes across as pure trolling as you must know what has gone on before on multiple articles. It's time arb woke up to this sort of thing and made it a blockable offense to go around trying to force infoboxes on FAs/GAs where the editors clearly have formed a consensus not to have one.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:20, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

Watchlist Message

[edit]
Yes, am watching!!

Hey Dr. B - I just had the thought that it might be a good idea to get the Africa Destub Contest listed at the top of people's Watchlists. This can be requested here: MediaWiki talk:Watchlist-details - I know that we had a bumper year when we did it in the WikiCup back when I was a judge. I think with the mention of cash prizes, it might get even more people to sign up (although there's a really pleasing number of sign ups already!). Miyagawa (talk) 13:16, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

@Miyagawa: Yes, can you or Casliber see to it that that is sorted? WMUK have approved the geography/wildlife prize but it would be good to mention that anybody contributing could potentially win over $1500 in Amazon vouchers for competing in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. But we can't really do that until WM has approved it themselves!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:39, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

I'll get it sorted. Miyagawa (talk) 16:43, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
@Dr. B: Super glad that others and you started this initiative. Our Africa space stubs / articles are truly in bad shape, and this may help. Thanks @Miyagawa for placing this on the top of watchlist. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 21:09, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
No problem at all. It's a very worthy cause, and after Dr. B sparked an interest in Welsh history for me during one of the previous contents, I'm hopeful that others will have the same experience with the new contest. Miyagawa (talk) 09:59, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks Ms Sarah Welch, sign up in the participants in Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon if interested! Even if prizes aren't your thing people can contribute to it as an editathon or potentially donate anything they might win to people who want books to write articles on Africa! I definitely think it's one of the most desperately needed things on wikipedia right now, something which targets those countries too like Togo and Liberia etc which barely have anybody editing them. Please invite others to participate too and spread the word! Oh BTW, I recently created Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge, needs contributors to work. Would love to have you on board and putting your lovely Indian articles up!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:14, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Somewhat related question: I've got a fair amount of info on various colonial administrators in Africa. Would they count for the contest?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 22:22, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes, they all count, as that's part of Africa's history, even if in many cases we wish it wasn't that way. I was hoping actually that a few would be interested in working on African history as I want to see all subjects improved really.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:36, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
@Dr. B: No prizes for me, but since you ask, I will try to contribute. For every 5 Africa articles you de-stub in this period, I will de-stub at least 1 Africa-related article. Not fair, some may say. Perhaps they know not the quality of your output. :-), Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 00:59, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Haha, that doesn't sound fair! Most of my time is going to be spent vetting it, but I'll try to contribute what I can! I'll make it a goal to destub one article minimum for each country anyway, so I'll try at least to aim for 55 articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:36, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Thank goodness Dr. B. Moments after making that promise, I wondered what have I gotten myself into?!! What if Dr. B de-stubs 5,000 articles!! Did I just promise to destub 1,000+ articles, then? 55 : 11+. Manageable. I will begin collecting reliable sources on Africa, and pile them on my desk. Lovely continent, wonderful people, from my experiences in the 20+ African countries I have been to. Thanks for the Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge lead, I wasn't aware. I will look into it too. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 12:40, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Pinging @Johnbod: and @Sainsf: Please note this initiative. Given your superb contributions to arts/history/African wildlife articles in the past, I hope your schedule will allow you to contribute a bit to Africa-related topics. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 17:22, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
@Dr. B: Yay! I just de-stubbed Flic-en-Flac. I am safe till you reach 5 Africa de-stubs. More seriously though, would you or your talk page stalkers know an easy way to find a list of stub articles in Africa article space that are related to native religions, rituals, deities, ethnic groups, artworks and related history topics? Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:23, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Tagishsimon may have answered that a few days back but I think he's spent on all things Africa right now LOL. He's put in a lot of work last week. or so.. Flic en Flac is great, please enter it into the contest. If not I'll add it to the bottom list on the main page of the contest at least :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:26, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Dr. B: Go ahead, please add it somewhere. I will watch where you list the Flic-en-Flac article, then add there my future Africa de-stubs to lessen your future administrative work. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:32, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

At the bottom of Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. People who don't want to enter the contest or follow the rules on that can just add anything to that! It all counts! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:46, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

I'm afraid I have defected from Africa to Women in Red (and being lazy, ODNB Women in Red, few if any of whom qualify for Africa). As for Ms Sarah Welch's question, petscan is a good place to start ... (doesn't work with Mac/Firefox ... I have to use Safari) ... it finds articles which are members of two or more categories (which for stubs will usefully be category:All stub articles. The trick is to find a useful second category. With category:Religion in Africa I found only Africa (goddess) (though that seems a good place to start.) The petscan example I linked to finds African dolls - not a stub but probably worthy of attention. If you can think of categories in which articles of interest might lie, then that's a route; but it is limited by the state of article categories, often not so good. (In other news, Dr. B, I'm not convinced using search is the way to go to find wildlife for those countries against which we have listed none ... not least, it's not clear if the articles found are stubs or not. And, I'd really like to get on with the backlog of women articles :) --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:52, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Don't worry, people aren't having any trouble finding those wildlife stubs! Enjoy your Africa hiatus ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:55, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

@Tagishsimon: Thanks for the guidance. It helps. Just so you know that your efforts triggered something, the Africa (goddess) article is no longer a stub. Whether your trigger led to a positive improvement to another Africa-space article, or I made it worse, that is for Dr. B to evaluate. Thanks again, Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 22:15, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
I !vote you won the competetion with those judicious edits, and expect Blowers to cough up, pronto. Petscan is v.useful, but probably not a good solution for your present needs, MSW. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:43, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge

[edit]

I'm glad someone came up with this. I thought it would be a good idea to inform every WikiProject of Asian countries to get more participants. I need help on what could be a good invitation message to be posted on their talk pages. Pratyush (talk) 17:19, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

@PratyushSinha101:, yeah I intend asking Ser Amantio di Nicolao to take care of alerting and inviting all Asian country projects and members but I've been overworking the poor chap on African invitations of late so wasn't going to ask him yet!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:32, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld:, I have informed some of the WikiProjects like Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject India and Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject South Asia. I intend to inform all the Asian country projects. Please tell if the Talk page invitations require any modifications. Pratyush (talk) 18:21, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

@PratyushSinha101: Thanks. On the invites though, please let Ser Amantio deal with that as he'll be able to do it much quicker. It'll be done soon enough. India is quite welcome to have its own Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic) type sub challenge feeding into it, and you could probably run a few state contests for states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala to feed it. But we need stronger support and entries coming in consistently like the current Africa one to make that worthwhile. Sign up if interested anyway and we'll have a general Asia focus to start with.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:57, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: I have a question. I've listed the three most recent articles that I've expanded, but should I go ahead and list all of the articles about Asia that I've expanded in the past and brought to either GA or FA status? I almost feel like that would be cheating...because most of those were before 2011 (before I joined the Peace Corps and travelled abroad). Pericles of AthensTalk 22:27, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

While I don't want to distract you from the review of Inès de Bourgoing, could you or a page watcher more familiar with British peerage put eyes on this? The titles are confusing to me, but I used Lady Cecil after her marriage because that is how most texts referred to her. I am also quite puzzled about the note in the German article which says she died of breast cancer. I found no reference to same and could not access the Times to see if there was an obit for her. SusunW (talk) 00:10, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

@SusunW: Brownhairedgirl might be a good one to ask on that. The article looks great, close to GA level I think with a bit of work. Will review Bourgoing today!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:19, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks doc. I thought she was close too, but figured she needed input from others before nominating her. And pictures. She needs pictures. SusunW (talk) 13:40, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

HA Schult

[edit]

You may remember my problems with one specific user concerning the article on Julius von Schlosser. See also this edit from your talk page. I did not contribute to Wikipedia for several months. Now I added some information to the article on HA Schult, and one or two hours later my old opponent User:Rhode Island Red has reappeared on the scene, removing content from the said article, falsely claiming that major exhibition catalogs and other publications are not reliable sources and such things (see, for instance, [1]) and now saying that the Washington Post article does not contain the removed information, although he himself included it in the main text of the article some years ago (see [2]). He even changed the wording of some parts of the text, thereby changing the original meaning supported by the given sources (see [3]). He also questions the notabilty of art historian Wolf Tegethoff (see [4]), presumably because I have created this article, and he continues questioning the notablity of articles on other art historians I have created (see [5]). I think it is high time to block the activities of this user. Wikiwiserick (talk) 00:05, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Can't remember it for some reason!Very busy at the moment.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:37, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

DYK and Africa de-stubbing initiative?

[edit]

@Dr. B: Any interest in DYK with the Africa initiative? Just did the 4th de-stub, with Hinduism in Uganda. It may qualify for DYK, once you review it and expand it / sprinkle your magic. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 15:34, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

I don't contribute to DYK these days sorry. My count was only so high because of Nvvchar and Rosie! Without them I doubt I'd be over 400!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:36, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

You okay if I decide to post it on DYK, with a mention of the "Africa de-stubbathon" initiative. I would not have worked on that article without this on-going Africa initiative of others and you. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 21:45, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
Ms Sarah Welch If I can butt in here, I think it would be great if you are able to contribute destubbed African articles to DYK. It will help to spread news of the initiative and will also give more encouragement for people to write or improve articles about Africa.--Ipigott (talk) 07:18, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

That's a lovely thing to say Ms Sarah Welch. I'm glad that I inspire people to create!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:30, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

@Ipigott:, @Dr. B: Will do. DYK may indeed spread the news about this initiative, plus bring more visibility to Africa through wikipedia's main page. That brings me to the another puzzle. The more useful de-stubs may be of those articles which see "relatively higher traffic" and are "stubs". That may mean viewers are looking for information, see a stub wiki instead, and we could help by improving those articles. Would you two know a way to easily rank or identify Africa-space articles that are stubs and see an average of say 100 views or more per day, from the 45,000+ Africa stubs we have? @@Tagishsimon:, others: any help would be appreciated. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 13:11, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

A list could be created, but I don't want to ask for any more lists if I can help it because I'm worried that I might start to irk off a few people!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:13, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

I don't know a way of reporting against page-view stats, sadly, so that's a non-runner for me right now. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:53, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

10,000 challenge for

[edit]

Hi, will there be a 10,000 challenge for South America and Oceania?

Yes, for Latin America and hopefully North America and one for the whole of Europe too. Each continent should have its own destubathon. But it's going to take time to fully set up and get people on board but we'll get there eventually I hope.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:06, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

Lists

[edit]

It's fine. Sometimes biogs seem a good idea. Sometimes whizzy lists seema good idea. Don't shy away from asking, your initiatives are well worth supporting. I see some good work being done in Africa, articles significantly improved. --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:20, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi. I destubbed Languages of Benin, which is a core stub. Should I remove it from the core stub list? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 16:27, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Nice one Editorofthewiki. yes, though "A unique variety of French called français d'Afrique has developed in the streets and markets of Cotonou. Grammatical structures are typically borrowed from the speaker's first language. It is especially the conjugation rules that have been changed the most, especially the less common forms like the literary style. It has an almost argotic character." needs sourcing and a few of the refs need filling out with publisher info but nearly there! Place it under Benin in the entries page.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:43, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

oh, must've missed the ref for that. I wasn't aware all the publishing info had to be filled out. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 22:36, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

The ones I checked didn't have many edits to them and some of them as old as February. I don't mind if it's a mix of older ones but it was all on the same subject over many months. Let's just start afresh on the Asia one and go from there I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:42, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Shanghai Yinji Aluminium requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. One de-stub = Many de-stubs

[edit]

@Dr. B: The Banda people article was listed as a stub under four African countries. So, technically I may have de-stubbed 4 out of 50,000 Africa-related stubs. In one shot!!! Yay!! Completed the 10th de-stub then. Just technically, I know. 7th, non-technically. Africa is interesting. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 02:20, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

Awesome :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:26, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

@Ipigott: I have nominated two of the seven articles I have so far de-stubbed, here and here to DYK, with credits to the Africa Destubathon initiative. I invite you (and talk page stalkers) to crosscheck / further improve the articles or review the DYK, if your schedule allows. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 16:18, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

I finally got around to signing up for this one too. I am wondering how best we can combine initiatives. Women in Red participants are being encouraged to contribute to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month which is running from 1 to 30 November. You will see we're now including it in our November activities. Perhaps somehow WiR contributions and any other EN Wiki contributions on Asia can be included in your Asian challenge too. But it would be good to avoid unnecessary duplication. I see Rosiestep is one of the three WAM organizers. Any ideas?--Ipigott (talk) 10:49, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Percentage bar

[edit]

Hi, I see, you've raised the percentage in Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey) to 6.7% . Well there are 67 entries to be exact. But it so happens that one (35th to be exact) is a deleted article. In the future there may be even more. Do the percentage bar include the deleted items ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 10:22, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

@Nedim Ardoğa:, if articles get deleted remove them from the list and don't count them. It's unfortunate that it got deleted as I don't agree with our notability requirement for sportspeople. notability should be dictated by sources, and CeeGee started a perfectly acceptable article in my eyes.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:42, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

It shouldn't be deleted. I perfectly agree. But this doesn't answer my question. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 10:48, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
If articles get deleted, remove them from the list. I said that. So the percentage bar doesn't include deleted entries, as unfortunate as it is. I'm sure people who have articles deleted don't want to frequently be reminded of it anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:08, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Alekos K. Damtsas Museum

[edit]

The article Alekos K. Damtsas Museum has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This museum fails the notability guidelines, as tagged since August 2008.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Nomination of Alekos K. Damtsas Museum for deletion

An idea for the sub-European challenge

[edit]

Hey Dr. Blofeld! While looking at the European 1,000 article challenge, I saw Spain being potential. In my opinion, since there are 1,000 challenges like Nordic countries, how about the challenge being called the 1,000 Iberian Peninsula Challenge to include Portugal and Andorra? Erick (talk) 21:02, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

@Magiciandude: Great idea!! Yup, that would attract more people and give a place like Andorra some attention too. I'll tweak that for Iberian then. Welcome aboard!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:09, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

@Magiciandude: Can you invite a few more potential people on that one? Offhand I can think of Cattus and that wikimedia guy from Catalan wiki, whatever his name is!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:12, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

I only know very few myself, but sure! Glad to see it was an idea worth taking! =D Erick (talk) 21:15, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Really Africa !!

[edit]

@Dr. B: I got pleasantly distracted from the noble Destubathon project. Instead focussed on clean up of almost entirely unsourced OR-loaded non-stub articles on Kongo people, Luba people etc. The OR there has been oared away. The articles are now sourced to multiple scholarly WP:RS. All this is still Africa related, so in the spirit and intentions behind the Africa Destubathon initiative by you and wonderful others behind all this. I will try to destub a few more in next few weeks. If there is a particular topic/region within WP:TAD that I can help, please let me know. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 04:57, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
