The Dukhan English School is an international school located in Dukhan, Qatar, following the British Curriculum. The school is owned and managed by Qatar Petroleum and serves about 1200 students aged 3 to 18, mostly the children of Qatar Petroleum employees.

History

[edit]

Dukhan English School is one of the oldest English medium schools in Qatar. It traces its origins back to the early 1950s when British Petroleum, the operators of the Dukhan Field at that time, established a school at what is now Dukhan Water Sports. Dukhan is a multinational town with up to 47 different nationalities residing there. The advancements and upgrades are going at a rapid pace and people gasp with interest to look at the same school just more than 20 years ago.

The school soon outgrew its early roots and was moved to a villa in the senior staff housing area. Many people remember with affection the work of Sheila Smith who was the schoolmistress in the 1960s. The 1960s also saw the establishment of the Dukhan Nursery, run by Alice Lishman. When Alice left Dukhan, the nursery was taken over by Qatar General Petroleum Corporation and amalgamated with the Primary School.

As the Dukhan oil operations grew, the school continued to expand and in September 1996 QGPC gave permission for Year 7 to be started. This was the beginning of the Secondary Section of Dukhan English School. A sixth form has also been created.

Today

[edit]

The secondary section has grown considerably since then and today offers English language, English literature, mathematics, physics, puberty, history, geography, design technology, art, business studies, development studies, economics, and Arabic.

Today, the school caters for the full age range of three to eighteen year olds. From September, the school will have over 1200 pupils and many teachers most of them coming from the United Kingdom. A sixth form has also been created. DES also offers Drama and Islamic studies.
