Hey, Just to let you know I've created User:The JPS/FUR because I'm tired of explaining what it is. The idea is to keep this basic and brief enough so that people are more likely to read it. If this doesn't work, I might create a specific one for TV. The JPStalk to me 00:03, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Infobox Book

[edit]

As you appear to be a lead contributor to the "Books" WikiProject I though I should draw your attention a change proposed and trial actioned on this template. That is the addition of a separate "image_caption" field. No new information required just laid out more clearly. "Novels" has had a few questions about the provision of such a field. And it seemed reasonable. Implemented as a optional field, and appears only when an image is included and caption text is included. For example, trial usage see The Pirate Saint Regards :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:47, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Fiction references

[edit]

Hi again. You appear to have set up some new links to "fiction" related items, such as "Fiction Article". Would an idea be to link that straight through to the "Novels/ArticleTemplate" or is that not the kind of think you had in mind. Just think as the twow projects are logically very related we should co-ordinate our efforts not duplicating effort or pulling in two directions etc. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:34, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

I see what you mean, I had been thinking for some time that the function of guide and pattern template (ie. cut and paste) were uncomfortable bedfellows. Perhaps we should be looking at a guide article and a seperate wikipedia template that could be "included" (not "transcluded") into each new document using the {{subst:xxxarticle}} idea. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:58, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Portal:Books

[edit]

I have just had a look - the work of two people who have done maybe half a job between them. One make a comment that this was requested. Where, I can't find it. My immediate reaction (by persuadable) is the the Literature portal should get any effort we can give it. That is, from both Books and Novels WikiProjects people, it already doesn't get enough attention, surely we will just dilute effort. Oh another Portal is my sigh! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:09, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Portal Literature

[edit]

Hi, I don't think I understand you fully. About a month ago I realized that the "Did you know" section hadn't been updated in a year, so I replaced the old questions with new ones, asked a question on the talk page and never got an answer (see Portal_talk:Literature#Portal:Literature.2FDid_you_know). I've been updating that part on a more or less regular basis every three or four days or so ever since, all the time (and still) hoping that someone else will join in. I'd say three to four days is about the right interval, and I don't think that all the sections have to be changed at the same time. Rather, it might be more interesting for the casual browser to see new bits and pieces here and there.

That's of course just my opinion. Any other decision / procedure would be fine with me as well.

Does this answer your question? All the best, <KF> 14:09, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Oh I see, what I didn't get at all was that you wanted the page to change automatically. Well done. I've uploaded all the things I had in store, so that gives those who want to join in a few weeks to think of new questions. What happens if the article for the following week / month remains a red link? Does the old one stay until someone has written something? Best wishes, <KF> 19:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
The only other thing I noticed is that it's rather difficult to edit, say, Week 25 from Portal:Literature/Did you know once it has been filled in (unless you add /Week 25 in your browser, but some people may not have that option). Would it be possible to add an "edit" link? <KF> 20:18, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
I couldn't do that myself. I'd use edit, but there surely is a better way. <KF> 20:24, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, the link to Talk:The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time — thanks for it anyway — didn't help at all to convince me that reproducing that list here at Wikipedia is a copyright infringement. But as I have neither compiled the list nor added the article containing it I don't mind if it is deleted.

The discussion about such lists, however, is moving in ridiculous circles rather than progressing and shows, as far as I'm concerned, classic symptoms of what has been aptly named copyright mania: The moment you can, and do, quote the source it's a copyright infringement? The moment we mention it has been compiled by Mr & Mrs So-and-So it's no longer NPOV? Why do we have an article on that stupid term "axis of evil"? Is that NPOV?

No, it isn't because we explain in the article when, how, and by whom it has been used, which makes the article (but not the term itself) NPOV. Similarly, we explain (or rather explained) in 100 Best Characters in Fiction Since 1900 who said so when and where.

If we copied whole passages from the article where individual members of the panel describe their reasons for voting for, say, Huckleberry Finn, that might be a copyright violation. But if Professor John Smith of Anywhere University hands out a reading list to his students and we say so and reproduce it?

Anyway, it is an interesting list because of its blatant U.S. bias, and we should rather magnanimously overlook potential, and in any case minor, copyright problems and focus on l'esprit des lois to serve users by showing them what various authorities consider great works of literature. <KF> 15:21, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]

Hello, I just want to ask if I can upload images that were scanned from a book. Though there is copyright on the book, does it apply to the photos of paintings, engravings, etc. that are considered to be in the public domain worldwide due to the date of death of its author, or due to its date of publication? Can reproductions that were created in the UK and Italy be freely used here on Wikipedia? Thanks in advance, ErikaG 11:13, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Info box

[edit]

I have failed to manipulte the university info box, it would be the ideal location for some of the information e.g campus = urban setting, land area = 180 hectares, rector should be changed to vice chancellor, chancellor must be added = Robert Mugabe - who happens to be the head of state and has a wikipedia article.

Your interest, skills and help will be greatly appreciated. Perhaps having a look at other university info boxes will articulate more clearly - a picture is a thousand words. Thank you!!

I have added the language of instruction = English. I suspect that this can also go into the university info box. Thank you in advance. Regards. Article = University of Zimbabwe.

It's my own artwork so it's not copyright infringing and it brightens up the page as it has no images.

I just thought it was a good header for the page as there are no images on it and it looks a bit dull. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ellectrika (talkcontribs)
Well encyclopedias are information sources not picture books - to put it blunt. If the image doesn't give additional info about the subject, then it is kinda redundant. P.S. Sign your comments on talk pages by adding four tildes (~~~~). Best, feydey 21:49, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Yep, sure I can! Give me a valid e-mail and I'll send it to you. If you don't speak portuguese you can ask a reliable source (such as a portuguese speaker administrator) to translate it. Regards! —Lesfer (talk/@) 21:55, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

But the website is brazilian. How am I supposed to send them a request in english? The e-mails are obviously in portuguese. I'll send you the e-mails, you ask a reliable source to translate them and this is it. If I translate by myself and add them to the image pages, people may still doubt the veracity of the license. —Lesfer (talk/@) 22:07, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I am the person who has written most of the article about Alice de Janze. May I ask why were the pictures deleted? They perfectly qualify for fair use, since they are newspaper covers. In case you doubt about the source, I can very easily e-mail you with two pdf files of the scanned newspaper pages to prove you that they indeed come from newspapers. -- Xanthi22 23:25, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

On images

[edit]

Sorry to bother you again. On the Newspapercover tagging it says that it is fair use 1) either if the publication name can be seen on the image itself or 2) if it is mentioned in the image description (which I did in both images). So I think they are ok as they are, they are still fair use. -- Xanthi22 00:24, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I will mention the exact source and article name (both are from articles). Do I have to scan the entire surrounding article or just the picture naming all the necessary information? -- Xanthi22 00:47, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]

Hi, you sent me a message regarding my uploading of a photo [1].

It's my first major wikipedia edit (I'm a huge fan of the band, thought they deserved a bit more), so I apologise if I screwed it up. I think I've got the right copyright and I sourced the photo in the summary. I can't figure out exactly where to put my rationale for fair use on the image page (it says the discussion page but I don't quite see it), I think the rationale is pretty obvious given the source and my choice for copyright tag, but I could be wrong. Let me know if there's more I need to do.

Tendulkar and Ganguly Image

[edit]

Feydey

Thanks for givig information about the copyright issue. I am confused abt the copy right whenever i upload any image. You can help me in that. The files Image:S ganguly.jpg and Image:S tendulkar.jpg havent been directly downloaded from internet and uploaded .

I have images of Tendulkar and Ganguly and using Photoshop ,I made those pictures with BCCI logo in the background.I dont think any ones holds the copy right for Tendulkar and Ganguly images (unless they are associated with some company or product ) and so for BCCI logo.

If this is right help me in putting the right tag and License. But if uploading the images was infringing the right of copy holder, I am sorry for that.

Sorry mate

Question

[edit]

Hello, I want to ask you something. Pictures of works of art (not taken by me) are copyrighted and unlicensed, as I pressume? However, I've read somewhere that perhaps if this work of art is a very well known of the artist, it still can be used on a fair use rationale (for instance, Guernica for Picasso). I want to upload a picture of Li by H. R. Giger. How should I tag it? -- Xanthi22 00:25, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]

Hi, I was thinking about converting the logo from .jpg to .gif. That would reduce the size of the file from about 64kb to about 17kb. That would increase uploading time. Cheers part 10:52, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

WP:NOVELS project can also help WP:BOOKS

[edit]

Please have a look at the list generated on Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/NovelsInCompleteInfobox. When this list was made, part of the criteria was to have only novel articles in the list. It is a simple matter to make a list to have only "non-novel" articles in it (WP:BOOKS thing :). Re:Image:Nazrul10

[edit]

Hi Feydey - I don't understand, since I've linked the website from where I obtained the source for this image. Additionally, this picture can be dated as easily prior to January 1, 1946 (see Kazi Nazrul Islam - the baby in the picture died in 1929), which makes it inherently public domain by Indian copyright law. Image tagging

[edit]

Hi Feydey, all of those images are purchased by me and belong to my collection of photos. I usually buy them from "Eye of Georgia" and "getimages." I don’t need the source because those photos are under my release. I already made a source by stating that that photo is from my collection. If any questions let me know. Thanks.Ldingley 17:57, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I buy their copyrights. Those image companies sometimes don’t provide the identity of author which is according to them protected by their company. I will explain the content as time will allow. But don’t delete something which is copyrighted to me and I am willing to share them with Wiki. I paid a fortune for some of them. Thanks. Ldingley 18:12, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

On the matter of images of Bangor Pier, there are four identical except for size and/or name. I am having a problem. Although I made these images and edited the article, I cannot see them in the Bangor Pier picture gallery that contains four pictures. I can see first and third not second (mine) nor fourth. I have same problem with other sites containing galleries. I am simply trying to find out why? So far, nothing I have done helps. Please see Talk:Ffestiniog Railway re Gallery for more info. I was experimenting on Bangor (out of despiration) simply because one of the pics was mine and I had noticed that the two that showed were smaller sizes. NoelWalley 20:34, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Image rules

[edit]

Hi Feydey,

Thanks for the image guidelines. I read up on the rules a bit after I tried to upload my first image, so I think I have a better handle on in now. For the time being, though, I'm going to steer clear of images until I have some more Wikipedia experience under my belt! S myrick 22:45, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

What template?

Hi, is this a template edit? If so, which one? Stifle (talk) 23:07, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Eurovision Photos

[edit]

The photos I upload a low resolution photos I had taken from the official eurovision website (www.eurovision.tv) as I have sourced on all the photos. These photos are smaller versions and free-use posted on the eurovision website in a media browser. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Evilperson 20 (talkcontribs)

I took the photo of the Stratocruiser at World Head Quarters. I've worked for United for over 9 years. Yes, I still have a job after ~45,000 cuts worldwide. ;)

There was this huge display near the Glen Tilton's office. It's a big model airplane. Very cool, isn't it? The additional description is from the plack near the display. I have a photo of it, too, but I thought I'd just type the contents out.

I'm Middle Management "currently" at World Head Quarters. The name will be changing to Operations Center sometime in the near future. I'm an avid fan of UA and AIRPLANES. I have a photo of the "Swallow" (UA's first claim to airspace), but I accidently cut off the good part for the photo. Grrrrrr.

Oh, I'm Candygram (model of stratocruiser) - real name Candy Stair. You can email me at candy.stair@att.net or candy.stair@united.com. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Candygram (talkcontribs)

Duplicate images

[edit]

You can just delete duplicates as an admin... Best, feydey 00:54, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

As an admin You knew that of course :P feydey 01:06, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I remembered that I'm an admin halfway through :P Stifle (talk) 09:34, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks ...

[edit]

... for your note. Yes, I had a nice time island hopping in Greece. If you've already got your own "Did you know" questions for the Portal Literature please feel free to move my questions to some later week. If not, I seem to have arrived back home just in time. All the best, <KF> 06:48, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

satellite imaging

o ok i'll check

Hey. What are your thoughts on Image:Alex kelly.jpg. Matthew Fenton keeps removing my 'disputed' tag. It was first tagged as promophoto. Now it has the blanket fair use tag, with a dodgy rationale. The source is an unofficial site and shows as a blank screen in my browser. The JPStalk to me 14:02, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

It looks OK now. feydey 09:51, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
