Goal Trace JAZZ to Roots.

It was 1951 when my father Mike Canterino first fell in love with Jazz music. He joined the Navy at 18 & his Ship was stationed down in Jacksonville Florida. There were many Jazz clubs/venues down south and he spent a lot of time hanging out in them. Mike met many musicians in the club scene and became friends with quite a few.

They would always let him know about the gigs going on in town.

He couldn't get enough of it.

Mikes mother & father had a family run bar called Frank & Jean's back in Manhattan on Hudson & spring street that served the best meatball sandwiches in town(that people still talk about today) and he thought that when he got out of the navy that he would ask his parent's if he could turn the place into a Jazz club. They said yes and the rest is history. The Half Note was born ! It took some time, but soon it became one of the hippest jazz clubs in the city. We had tasty Italian food with liive jazz music. My grandparents were almost always in the kitchen and they made everything from scratch. Musicians always came back to the kitchen to say hello & taste the homemade gravy 😋 My Father, uncle sonny & aunt Rosemarie were running around doing everything else. Being a small family run place, Musicians loved to play there because they loved the vibe and were treated like family. A lot of the musicians not only became friends

With our family but made friends with many of the customers throughout the years.

My Father met his future wife (Judimarie) in 1958 when she came down to hear Lenny Tristano ( her music teacher at the time) & his band play. Mike & Judy married in 1960. (A love story in itself)❤ The club had a good run from 1957 - 1972 On Hudson & spring. They made a change & took a chance to Move uptown to 54st in 1975 the club closed its doors. The dream still lives as there are a number of Jazz Clubs that carried on the name. The most famous is in Athens Greece.

THE ORIGIN OF JAZZ MUSIC Nowadays, there аrе a lot of people who enjoy excellent jazz music. Almost every home has one or more people who love to listen and dance to its cool rhythm and moving beat of jazz music. However, jazz music did not easily come along since it all started in America. In fact, based on its African American origin, this type of music genre or style had its share of low times patronage before it hit the present popularity spot. While many people around the world are now enjoying Jazz, there was a time when it was not accepted as a style of music as it is today. Thus, most people believe that Jazz music was first heard during the period known as the "Jazz Age" of the 1920s. But then, Jazz music was born in the late 18th century as a result of black people slavery and political oppression in America. Black people resistance against the racist and oppressive political system was manifested in the way of black Americans to play their style of music. In addition to political oppression, history also recorded that racial discrimination is what precisely gave birth to the music of resistance, such as the Spiritual, gospel and blues. Thus, this process could be interpreted as a cultural resistance of black people to Westernization which is as a result of their distinctive African culture with which they strong held onto even after they were brought to America. The first set of instruments that was used to play this new music style were commonly part of military marching bands. The African Americans took up woodwind, percussion, brass, and string instruments. Without formal training, the new musicians were free to interpret and play in their own style. Thus, the new music lacked formal structure, organization and that’s why collaborative improvisation became a vital feature of the unique sound. Hence the combination of improvised African rhythms with American tunes, European instruments form what is now known as Jazz and it developed, long improvised solo performances have also become part of many musical pieces. The first style оf music tо bе сlаѕѕеd аѕ Jаzz wаѕ іnіtіаllу саllеd Dіxіеlаnd, and іt wаѕ performed frоm аrоund the turn of thе century іn thе Southern States of America. New Orleans wоuld bесоmе thе first home of this new sound. History has also recorded that Dixieland itself had its roots in the Ragtime music played at the end of the nineteenth century as several Dixieland orchestras, musicians and bands wоuld іnсludе Ragtime music in their repertoire. However, in recent years Jazz has become a form of music that gives musicians the freedom to express and experiment with sounds. New rhythms and harmonies could be added to music on the fly, adding originality to each performance. Hence, this style of music can be described as "music from the heart." As time goes on, each instrument and performer were adding their brilliance to the collective performance. Putting all together is what was transformed into the style of Classicism, which is now called Jazz!
