John Dote', born June 7, 1955 in the Bronx, New York, stays worlds ahead of the curve and is a dynamic American record producer, recording engineer, songwriter, drummer, keyboardist, vocalist and radio promoter who's image of gold chains, leather, fur boots and Rolls Royce landed him on the cover of many newspaper, magazine, radio and television shows. He has produced artists who have performed in front of a world wide audience on American Idol, America's Got Talent and Soul Train.
Early life and music career
[edit]Dote' has promoted Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Carlos Santana, Britney Spears and many others. In addition, he was the drummer of such monumental television themes as Hawaii Five-0, Charlies Angels, Dynasty, Dallas, Barnaby Jones and many more from the classic album Hooked On Themes on the Penthouse Records label. He brought in world re-noun record producer Joe Saraceno, producer for The Ventures as well as heavy hitter session players from the hit groups Steely Dan and Malo to assist him on the productions. The album debut with James Gabbard of K101 Radio, San Francisco in 1982 and was broadcasted as far away to Japan.
His mother Dianne, a fashion designer bought him his first drum set at the tender age of 4 to keep him from roaming the dangerous streets of NYC. But that was tough to avoid being he had uncles in the mafia and would take him to their gatherings in the projects. In other terms "The Ghetto". His mother (who designed the wardrobe for Sly & The Family Stone ) and father, a car salesman to the New York Yankees were going through difficult times and were forced to put John and his brother Ron in a foster home in New Jersey for an entire year leaving their sons devastated at such a young age. They were two lost souls and John suffered a beating much like an inmate and was left to bleed before help could arrive. He was stabbed in the hand by another angry child. Unfortunately, his parents could only visit one hour every Sunday and there was nothing anyone could do including them. This was a kids jail for children who had never committed a crime.
The only thing they were guilty of was that they were never asked to be born. His mother relocated John and his brother to San Francisco in 1966 and they lived under cover from the father changing their last names several times. In 1969, Dote' left a party at Huddart Park in Northern California and was picked up hitch hiking by a drunken driver and on a winding road drove off a cliff at 60 miles an hour hitting the only tree in sight head on in a 59 Volvo which had no seat belts. Upon impact, Dote's entire head went through the windshield and then pulled back his body cutting his face into a bloody mess. Had it not been for the tree, the car would have spiraled into flips several miles down the cliff causing major death to both he and the driver.
Dote' withdrew from high school in the tenth grade to pursue his musical career in the San Francisco Bay area. A close teenage friend of his by the name of John Salani had ties and associated with well known music industry figures that were well connected with radio and record labels which he introduced Dote' to. As a result, Dote' signed his first publishing contract with Max Weiss, founder of Fantasy Records in Berkeley, Ca. and manager of Creedence Clearwater Revival led by John Fogerty at the age of 21. But his career really advanced in 1976, when record executive and promoter for Warner Bros. Records, Pete Marino signed him to Penthouse Records to write the theme for the hit television show "This Is San Francisco" which was seen around the globe titled "May I Have This Dance?" It became a huge hit at studio 54 in New York where Madonna also broke out of years later and was also used as the theme for the grand opening of the largest Tower Records in New York. Marino signed him because he thought that Dote' could have been the "fifth Beatle" with his brilliant song writing ability. Dote' took "Disco" music to a new level even with the limitations of the technology back then and invented his own style of "European Disco " which radio disc jockeys claimed was better than the theme from Rocky.
By the year 1981, Dote' was producing albums featuring Liberace and his "live" performance "The Exodus" in San Carlos, Ca. to a sold out crowd along with Tony Bennett "I Left My Heart In San Francisco"again for the Penthouse Records label which was owned by Marino and operated by Dote'. He then began touring the bay area as a drummer for legendary performers such as Gregg Allman , Buddy Miles , and the king of blues John Lee Hooker. But when Dote' learned that Marino owed $5,000.00 in back taxes to the company, Dote' terminated the relationship. It was also a well known fact that he was also terminated from Warner Bros. as an executive for the same reason. He was credited with launching the careers of Frank Sinatra , The Dave Clark Five , The Kinks and Goldie Hawn . He also worked and produced local bay area artists with Felton Pilate best known as a member of the 1970s and 1980s funk-R&B band, Con Funk Shun. He is also notable for the songs and albums he produced with MC Hammer.
However, the later part of the 80's witnessed the crash of the music scene in San Francisco. The cost of living skyrocketed and most major record labels and distributors either moved to L.A. or New York including Nashville. Many recording studios saw a decline in business as well and closed shop leaving the bay area hanging and looking like a skeleton. Empty office buildings and parking lots where bands and artists used to showcase their talents became a ghost town for the homeless, the pimps, drug dealers and the prostitutes.
In 2000, he created his own television series titled "Night Beat In Las Vegas" which aired 50 episodes on Screen Gems Network for ABC Television.
Dote' has promoted for every major star that reads like "the who's who" in the record industry including Christina Aguilera, Sting, Mary J. Blige, Sarah Mclachlan, NSync, Backstreet Boys, Garth Brooks, Leann Rimes and even his own name, just to name a few.
But his most memorable moments are when Santana would bring his guitar over to his San Carlos Recording Studio and layer his lead guitar while sitting on the couch to a Dote' composition with Dote' on drums. This is not about what John Dote' has accomplished but rather who he is.
