The Alberta Electric System Operator, abbreviated AESO, is a not-for-profit corporation responsible for the planning[2] and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System in a safe, reliable, and economical manner[3][4]. AESO is the trade name of the Independent System Operator established by the 2003 Electric Utilities Act (Part 2 section 7). AESO's mandate is outlined in the EUA Part 2 section 17.

Among other things, the AUC may hear objections to of complaints regarding ISO rules, adjudicate contraventions of ISO rules and hear complaints regarding the conduct of the ISO. http://www.auc.ab.ca/about-the-auc/who-we-regulate/Pages/default.aspx

AESO operates a market for the exchange of electric energy in Alberta and attempts to uphold the principles of market fairness, openness, and efficiency. To this end AESO contracts with transmission facility owners to provide generators access to the electric grid.

AESO operates independently of any industry affiliations and owns no transmission or market assets[4].
