During its 16 years period of rule, the Kingdom of Cambodia was ruled by a Muslim ruler named Ramathipadi I who – with the help from Malayan Muslim merchants – in 1642 took over the throne from his cousin and his uncle and changed his name to Sultan Ibrahim, becoming the only khmer sultan to ever reigned in Cambodian history. Being a Muslim and a ruler of a majority Buddhist nation, Sultan Ibrahim faced many challenges, from the internal resentment, conflict with the Dutch East India Company, and the neighboring states of Siam and Vietnam, which eventually led to his own disposal after an invasion in 1658, ending the brief period of Muslim rule in the country.

This period is deemed as an important piece of Islamic history in Cambodia and the history of relationship between Khmer and Chams as well as Malays, in their role for the establishment of Islam in Indochina.
