Midmarch Arts Press is an American not-for-profit organization from New York, NY that publishes works involving the arts, criticism, and poetry.
Background
[edit]Midmarch Arts Press was established in 1974 by Cynthia Navaretta. It began with a periodical, Women Artist News, which ran for 24 years. Women Artist News, whose founding editor was Judy Seigel, published reviews on art and books, and also included poetry and essays by women. Midmarch Arts Press began publishing books in 1979 and have been issuing up to six titles annually since.[1]
Navaretta has also been widely attributed as a champion for obscure women writers.[2] She recognized that the art world was not only disproportionately male but also dominantly white. American artist Howardena Pindell once explained:
“Cynthia was very brave and supported women and women of color when no one else was willing to. Without her my books would not have been published or my opinion heard.”[3]
