Himalayan Monasteries

[edit]

[1]Buddhism had spread to the Himalayan region during Buddha's life time. During 3rd century BC, Emperor Ashoka[[2]]visited Kathmandu in Nepal[[3]]. Great Buddhist Masters[4] like Vasubandhu, Santarakshaka and Padmasambhava[5] visited Himalayan kingdoms of Nepal[[6]] and Tibet.[[7]] Vajrayana Buddhism[8] is followed almost all along the [9] Himalayan range. Monasteries of Vajrayana Buddhism are found throughout Himalayan range in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan; the earliest being Samye Monastery[[10]]in Tibet.

The religious structures of Vajrayana Buddhism in the Himalayan belt are seen as Monasteries, Lakhangs/ Gomphas and Chortens.[11] In Mahayana Buddhism they are known as Chaitya, Vihara and Stupas, respectively.
