The 2020 North American GT Championship was the first and only season of the fictional American sports car racing series organized by the Association for Worldwide Motorsport (AWM). The series began its inaugural season in 2020, folding at the end of the season to make way for future events on the calendar. All races were run in the form of 2:40 sprint races.
The season was set to begin on August 9th at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and end on November 8th at Sebring International Raceway.
History
[edit]The competition was born in late 2019 as the AWM looked to expand into their home market of the United States. In June 2020, the series was announced to be streamed live on the AWM's YouTube channel, barring the final round at Sebring. This would be broadcast on YouTube TV, featured on tape delay on the aforementioned channel.
The series was initially announced to have a length of 22 races, but was shortened to 14 races due to dwindling entries and the association's financial difficulties.
Class structure
[edit]There were three classes in the series, all of which consisted of grand tourer-style cars.
- GTE: A class featuring cars built to the ACO's GTE specifications.
- GT3: A class featuring cars built to FIA GT3 specifications.
- GT4: A class featuring cars built to the FIA's GT4 specifications.
