Please stop removing introductory and serial commas

[edit]

You are making edits in the name of grammar, but they are not improvements.

  • Introductory commas necessarily reflect pauses that would be there if read aloud. If you have confusion as to what these are or the introductory clauses that they set apart from the rest of a sentence, please see nps.edu/web/gwc/commas-introductory.
  • Serial commas are mandated by many American style guides, allowed by some style guides, and occasionaly disavowed by others. MOS:SERIAL states: Editors may use either convention so long as each article is internally consistent. Serial commas are more helpful when article text is complex, such as a list with multi-word items (especially if one contains its own "and") or a series of probably unfamiliar terms.

Now that you have been alerted, please take heed. I will regard future removal of introductory commas as disruptive. Except in a case of copyedit that obviously resolves cases of ambiguity, I also will regard your removal a serial commas without a clear explanation to be disruptive. In either case, I will advise you here with progressively higher levels of warning.

Please excuse me for be so brusque, but I do not think we can tolerate removing good puntuation in the guise of grammar correction. Peaceray (talk) 22:31, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in Wien (river), disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Please see MOS:CURLY Peaceray (talk) 22:10, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
