Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Information icon Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did at 2024 Portuguese legislative election. Your edits appear to be disruptive and have been or will be reverted.

Please ensure you are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Continued disruptive editing may result in loss of editing privileges. Thank you. Ad Orientem (talk) 03:35, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock Request

[edit]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

I realized I had an extension enabled that added 'triple parenthesis' to certain names and organizations. This was something I installed years ago. I figured out how to disable it for Wikipedia today, and I assure you that none of my edits were in bad faith at all, and these parenthesis were added by mistake by an automated program. I assure you that I will follow Wikipedia's guidelines, and I hope my edits that I have done myself prove that I am acting in good faith. Thank you for your consideration. Bauthier24 (talk) 17:56, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

As per below. We have no tolerance for this here. Yamla (talk) 18:13, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Please explain in detail why you installed this malicious extension on your computer. Cullen328 (talk) 18:00, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is very, very hard for me to imagine an answer to that question that isn't an obvious decline for the unblock request. But hey, I'll wait to see what answer is given before reviewing the request. It's not the first time I've seen this excuse used, though I can't find the other example. Without an incredibly good reason, just installing such a browser extension is more than sufficient grounds to leave the account blocked indefinitely. At least, it was last time. --Yamla (talk) 18:04, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why would having it installed but disabled on Wikipedia be an issue? Bauthier24 (talk) 18:08, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is that of concern if it will be disabled on Wikipedia? I installed it years ago when I was involved in debates on providing Israel with weapons, which I am opposed to, but that has no effect on my edits here. I appreciate Wikipedia aiming to foster an unbiased and informative encyclopedia of worldwide knowledge and events, and I want to keep it that way. None of my edits where bad faith was assumed were intentional. Wikipedia's moderation team does a good job undoing vandalism like that, and I applaud that. Why would I waste my time adding those parenthesis if I knew they would be removed swiftly? I want to keep contributing in productive ways. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:07, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You promised to remove that antisemitic extension four days ago and failed to do so. You are paying the consequences. Cullen328 (talk) 18:11, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is fair. It sounds unbelievable, but I did in fact remove it, but the last edits I made, I was using my laptop which it was not disabled on. Additionally, user "Ser!" referred to me as a Nazi in the discussion page, which I am not.
"the fact a user has an extension like this installed in the first place is a pretty clear violation of WP:NONAZIS, which while not Wiki policy, is a pretty good guideline to follow. Good block."
Does having an extension installed for reasons that aren't even applicable in recent days mean I am a committed national socialist or white supremacist? I have Arab ancestry. Will you give me 1 more chance? Why would I be wasting my time responding here if I didn't want to provide constructive edits that aren't removed immediately? Bauthier24 (talk) 18:14, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Yes. An obviously racist browser extension like that? That you deliberately installed? We have no tolerance for that kind of garbage here. I'll go and decline your unblock request. --Yamla (talk) 18:12, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like an unproductive and biased response that has nothing to do with curating this wiki. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:15, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Especially using words such as 'racist' and 'garbage.' Really? Everyone else has raised good points and has been cordial, but this is just disrespectful and unprofessional. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:17, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand. Sorry Bauthier24 (talk) 18:21, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I already discussed this label. I am not a nazi/white supremacist/whatever you want to call me. I am trying my best to make constructive edits. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:20, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also want to say thank you to User:Cullen328 for being respectful. I appreciate you trying to curate an informative and respectful encyclopedia. You also keep everything professional, which I appreciate. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:35, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate everyone's work in creating a clean and unbiased encyclopedia. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:38, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also want to say, as a muslim who has lived in diverse areas across America, Canada and Mexico, I am deeply sorry for any harm I have done. I hope you accept my apology but an unban is not needed. Bauthier24 (talk) 23:13, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I assure you that I will follow Wikipedia's guidelines, and I hope my edits that I have done myself prove that I am acting in good faith. I am also NOT a nazi, white supremacist, or anything of the such. I have partial Arab ancestry and I had such an extension installed in the first place because I was involved in high-level debates about funding Israel with money and weapons about 5 years ago. I recognize that having an extension installed that highlights people based on their ethnicity is wrong. At the time, I saw it as a way to tell what side people were on in the debate, but it was misguided. I want to prove to you that my edits are productive. I removed this extension from both computers I use for editing on Wikipedia. Thank you for your consideration. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:26, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

You were cautioned about this on March 11. You said you disabled it on March 11. Good faith was assumed and you were given a pass. Then you did it again on March 14. Why should we trust you at all? --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 19:56, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please realize that I forgot to disable this Chrome extension from my laptop. I already disabled it on the Computer. I appreciate the pass being given, but it was a silly oversight on my part to not remember to disable and uninstall this on both devices. I ask you please give me one more chance. I will not disappoint. Bauthier24

Maybe you give me a chance to make some edits for a day and prove that I am acting in good faith? I will not disappoint. (talk)

  • I Endorse this block. As I currently understand the situation... The edit for which you were warned by me was not in fact some kind of technological glitch. That apparently there is actually some kind of program or extension out there that is designed to put antisemitic tags on the names of Jewish people and/or subjects that neo-Nazis associate with Jews. And that you intentionally had this program on at least TWO of your devices. I am admittedly one of very few admins who doesn't treat odious beliefs as grounds for an instant block. But we are all responsible for our conduct. That doesn't just apply here, it's a rule of life. You have, by your actions, advertised social/political views that are rightly condemned by all civilized people. How can you possibly expect to function productively on a collaborative project composed of people from every corner of the world, every ethnic, racial and religious (or non-religious) background? A project that deals with FACTS, contra fringe pseudo-science and conspiracy theories. I very rarely support draconian sanctions, but given your apparent beliefs, which you have advertised through flagrantly disruptive edits, frankly I am inclined to regard this block as a de-facto WP:CBAN. Courtesy ping Cullen328, Yamla, jpgordon. -Ad Orientem (talk) 21:51, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for being cordial and understanding, and for giving me a chance.
Using the term "rightly condemned," "odious," and judging people as civilized or not based on their acceptance of beliefs seems to negate Wikipedia's policy on staying politically neutral (Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view). I have already stated before I am not hateful and I work with people of all different ethnoreligious backgrounds. I didn't know this was a "Neo-Nazi" extension when I downloaded it as a teenager, so thank you for letting me know about this.
I do want to make it clear these weren't intentional edits, and I did not in fact install this extension on two devices. It is synced by Google Chrome automatically. See the following link for further details:[1]. I encourage you to read other dialogue from my account to develop further understanding. I believe I can in fact collaborate with people from every corner of the world, as shown through my normal edits unaffected by this extension issue. Bauthier24 (talk) 22:10, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also want to add that these are my current extensions installed at this point:
- Honey
- Adblock
- Google Translate
- Transpose Pitch
- Malwarebytes
- Ublock Origin
- Cently
- HTML5 Audio Tag Sound Effects
- Coupert
- Secure Bookmarks
- Return YouTube Dislikes
- Grammarly Bauthier24 (talk) 22:15, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't need to be unbanned anymore. I just want to say I'm sorry for any harm I have caused and for breaking your trust. Bauthier24 (talk) 22:27, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

About Me

[edit]

Hello. I am from Alberta, Canada (adopted from Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine) currently living in Mexico, and I would like to provide mostly quick edits and fixes for Wikipedia articles. I also like to keep track of endorsements of political candidates and I try to update live results of elections as they come in here on Wikipedia. I strive to stay apolitical. I am now done with using Wikipedia. I wish everyone the best. Bauthier24 (talk) 18:29, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page

[edit]

You have access to your talk page solely so you can contest the block. You may also choose to remove any or all content apart from declined unblock requests. Nothing else, though, please, not while you are blocked. --Yamla (talk) 22:54, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is that a rule? Can you cite it please Bauthier24 (talk) 22:56, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:OWNTALK, WP:WEBHOST. It's not for spewing essays apparently (according to zerogpt) written by AI chatbots. Seriously, I wonder why any of us are bothering wasting our time here. --Yamla (talk) 23:00, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Guidelines aren't rules. But I apologize for the time I have wasted. I'm embarrassed and I wanted to put info about one of the most interesting and misunderstood ethnic groups to drown out the negativity. Being born in Carpatho-Ukraine, it is important to me. Anyways, have a good day and I truly wish you the best.
- Brock Bauthier24 (talk) 23:09, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We deviate from the guideline only when there’s a very good reason to do so, and so far I’m not seeing any. If you want to earn the trust of other editors, don’t claim to be born in a state that ceased to exist 85 years ago. Northern Moonlight 00:37, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is what my family has always called it. It is also called carpatho-ruthenia and zakarpattia. How would I have been born in an unrecognized state that existed for only a couple days? You seem misinformed on the naming of the region. Bauthier24 (talk) 00:42, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also are you delegitimizing the existence of such a region? That undermines Ukraine's cultural claim to the region. Bauthier24 (talk) 00:46, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This has gone on long enough. Any further comments or discussion should be related to the block. Otherwise I will revoke talk page access. -Ad Orientem (talk) 01:00, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I will stop I just didn't appreciate the snarky comment from them. Thank you for doing your job and have a good day. Bauthier24 (talk) 01:13, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
