This is going to be HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE!!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:05, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To do... I'm going to try to list the articles created in the 2009 challenge and add a photo gallery so the next generation of Bacon Challengers can reflect on past accomplishments. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:50, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking for an excuse...

[edit]

... not to finish bacon ice cream. Remind me again in 7 months... Bigger digger (talk) 17:02, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Which one of these will be notable?

[edit]

I'm guessing the floss is gonna be huge. [1] Law type! snype? 11:55, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm thinking the bacon alarm clock (not listed in the article link) has a good shot. One or two house fires and there will be plenty of news coverage. Does BLP 1E apply to bacon products? ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:52, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change of scope?

[edit]

Given the resistance towards the previous bacon challenge's articles being all on the main page dyk at the same time (and thereby it passing with people not even realizing it happened), perhaps we should change the scope of the challenge. Maybe create a featured bacon article for national pig day? Featured articles on specific days seems to be accepted. Thoughts?--kelapstick (talk) 16:53, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for a special Bacon WikiCup

[edit]

You probably know about the WikiCup, well how about an alernative WikiCup specially for the bacon challenge? A point scoring system is used and all participants report any bacon pictures, articles or DYKs that they have created/contributed to. More information on how to report your contributions should be posted at a later date. The scorekeeper (Sky Attacker) awards points for such contribution to the Bacon Challenge. At the end of the challenge, the paritcipant with the most points is awarded the "Bacon Bits Of Recognition" Trophy. All participants recieve a barnstar for their involvement. Suggested point scoring is as follows:

  • New bacon article: 5 points
  • Substantial contributions to a bacon article: 2 points (4 points if brought up to GA / 5 points if brought up to FA before the last day)
  • Bacon photograph/illustration upload: 2 points (6 points if FP is achieved before the last day).
  • Successful DYK nomination 1 point for both the nominator and key contributor(s)--
    • Copy-editing by itself will only score 1 point regardless of the article's quality status. Additions of content will score the points noted. You must make at least six appropiate "differences" in the same article to score the point. For example, fixing three typos can count as three "differences", regardless of whether or not you make those differences in the same edit or in three individual edits.
    • If an article or picture gets deleted, all points that any participants gained from their work in that article or picture upload are lost.

Proposal Comments

[edit]

Say what you think about the proposal here.--Sky Attacker the legend reborn... 21:30, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like the idea very much, it will motivate users to participate much more in this event. As for the 8 points for GA/FA status of articles you created, I assume this would be awarded to the user who significantly helped promote the article to such a status, not necessarily the user who created it, correct? If so, it should be clarified. Also, I think FA should be worth more points than GA, like 10, if this is the case. As for copy-editing, perhaps this could also be clarified with requirements, such as increasing an article's size based on its quality (stubs=4x, C=2x, something like that). Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:08, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If the hamster likes it then I approve. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:02, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am happy with the alterations in points.--Sky Attacker the legend reborn... 03:07, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I made some slight adjustments if you don't mind ([2]), please amend them as you find necessary. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:52, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sir Francis Bacon

[edit]

Shouldn't Sir Francis Bacon be declared the mascot of this contest? After all, he proumulgated the scientific method, which presumably can be applied to how to make the best bacon (I've found by applying the scientific method the best way to get the tastiest bacon is to bake it in the oven instead of frying it). President of the United States

[edit]

And don't forget that the President of the United States is judged by how well he enables the citizens of the United States to "bring home the bacon"--i.e., by how many jobs he creates during his administration. Keraunos (talk) 05:37, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern-style barbecue is obviously better than what Lexington infidels like to call "barbecue". APK whisper in my ear 07:17, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bad idea

[edit]

It is a bad idea to leave an article sitting in your sandbox for months as is suggested by this challenge. User:LadyofShalott/Ossabaw Island Pig was scooped by Ossabaw Island Hog, and I only had that for a few says. Sorry I'm in a bad mood at the moment, feeling like I wasted a good bit of time. LadyofShalott 06:32, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Seriously, of all the redlinks on that page, he and I had to pick the same one??? :( :( :( LadyofShalott 06:37, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we could change it to instead see how many DYKs and article improvements, etc, editors make before the piggy date arrives? :) Cirt (talk) 07:12, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I (obviously) think that would be wise. LadyofShalott 07:13, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm just going to do mine with that goal in mind, see Everything Tastes Better with Bacon. I think it is a noble goal in either case, and this way we don't risk overloading and possibly annoying the good ole' WP:DYK folks (not that there's anything wrong with that). Cirt (talk) 07:17, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is a worthy effort to get X number of live DYKs by a certain date on a certain topic. :) It is along the same lines of WP:AUSGA, which succeeded in getting over 200 WP:GAs on Australia topics before Australia Day. Cirt (talk) 07:25, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New template

[edit]

Heads up, created new template:

WikiCup participant interviews

[edit]

Week 1 interview is up: User:Sky Attacker/Bacon WikiCup 2010#Participant Interviews ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:56, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The first interview was of Glane23 and the second one of Cirt is also up now. I found it interesting and entertaining. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:19, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK special event holding area

[edit]

Why not post bacon related articles to the DYK Special occasion holding area for International Bacon Day? That would more or less guarantee they all get used on the same day and DYK would have overwelming bacon superiority. SpinningSpark 00:36, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds like a good idea. That might alleviate the attraction of sandbox development. I think we need approval form the DYK powers that be though... I volunteer you to be our delegate in that discussion. Good luck. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:56, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think the best plan might be add a heading there and see if anyone objects. If the heading sticks, we can start adding articles under it. I'll go do it. Can someone confirm that I have the right date, 4th September 2010? SpinningSpark 10:56, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Aargh, just realised that there is a special occasion for 1st March, did not read the challenge page properly. Changing the heading on the DYK page. SpinningSpark 11:23, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The consensus at DYK seems to be that we should not post anything in the holding area earlier than a month before the event. In this case that's after the end of January. SpinningSpark 16:32, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A bacon task force?

[edit]

What does everyone think about a bacon task force within the boundaries of WP:FOOD? --Dylan620 (contribs, logs) 21:43, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it sounds delicious. --kelapstick (talk) 21:49, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense to me... maybe expanded a bit to pork in general? LadyofShalott 22:08, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
@ LadyofShalott: Sounds like a good idea.
Also, as a quick addendum, I was also thinking about making a bacon portal. --Dylan620 (contribs, logs) 22:33, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For what it might be worth, I notice there isn't a "Meat" project, task force, or portal yet. Considering this is at least scheduled to be a temporary matter, I think that might be the best way to go. It would also allow for beef, turkey, chicken, maybe fish, and other specific "challenges" for the rest of the year. Of course, if you all want one, go ahead. I haven't done any articles myself yet, but I have done a lot of project and portal setup, so if anyone wanted any help in that regard let me know. Also, for what little it might be worth, I was thinking maybe it might look strange if "bacon" were the only thing featured on National Pig Day. Maybe expanding to include the rest of the pig might not be a bad idea. John Carter (talk) 21:30, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
John makes some good points. I was thinking also that it could be a joint taskforce (or whatever) of both the F&D and the agriculture projects, since it could cover the actual animals (specific pig, etc. breeds...) that are relevant. LadyofShalott 21:44, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Meat substitute products such as Quorn? --Redrose64 (talk) 22:30, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mmmmmm, pork chops Geoff Who, me? 05:02, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK section

[edit]

I set up a DYK section for National Pig Day. I don't know if there is any guarantee relevant articles will be put up that day, but I am optimistic that the powers that be will respect this important holiday celebration. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:39, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re your message about moving articles to DYK. All mine were moved earlier in the week (except for a couple I am still writing). It is probably too late to get any more in for tomorrow in any case, the queue looks pretty full already and the reviewers usually like a couple of days to process them before putting them up. You might want to take a look at Sky Attacker's articles though, and see if any of them can be moved to mainspace. SpinningSpark 11:47, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
