With regards to Wikipedia, a few things you should know about me:
  • I try to accommodate. I'm sure every personality type is represented here, and surely some people just aren't going to get along. I try to practice common courtesy, with Zen being the popular word to describe it; "Go with the flow". However, even the deepest river has a limit to how much crap it can flow over and still remain calm. But I do my best.
  • I'm not perfect. If I've done something wrong or offended you, please let me know — I most likely didn't even realise what happened! I'm mostly a friendly chap. See WP:AGF and WP:BITE.
  • I try to evoke discussion. I strongly believe in healty, vigorous debate as well as WP:CITE, so additions without motivation can sometimes be viewed under increased scrutiny, especially when I'm on patrol for vandalism. Without proper references and citations, there are times when it can be difficult to tell between fact and targetted vandalism, and then one tends to err on the side of caution.
  • I tend towards inclusionism. There are no storage issues on Wikipedia, but I agree with WP:NOT and Wikipedia:Notability.

Goed so! Just give me a few days to get my ducks in a row and write a swell motivation (I'm having a bit of a busy week :-) ) ... how does early next week sound? Kind Regards, Elf-friend 10:02, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

OK, I've gone and done it ...
Regards, Elf-friend 13:46, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
Jammer dat ek so lank gevat het om terug te skryf, ek was nie gister naby 'n rekenaar nie ... ek stem saam, dit lyk my of 'n hele paar mense vashaak by 'n kleinerigheid (en iets waarmee ek eintlik nie saamstem nie) ... ek sal probeer om nog 'n paar stemme vir jou te probeer werf. Sterkte, Elf-friend 10:03, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Sjoe, ek is baie jammer dat my nominasie jou in so 'n spervuur laat beland het! Sterkte, Elf-friend 11:29, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
En nou het ek myself lekker deurmekaar gemaak ... wat ek eintlik bedoel het, is dat ek met jou filosofie saamstem, maar nie met hulle rede hoekom hulle teen jou stem nie. Groete, Elf-friend 11:44, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi, I did not participate in the debate because it seems there are always those who know better and I would need to understand all the motivation, or otherwise, that is presented. In my book you exude enthusiasm and a constructive approach. Now I shall read the discussion document and try to understand the logic..

Cheers..keep on sailing.. Gregorydavid 09:47, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

spammy references to SafariNow.com on various South Africa pages

Hi Dewet

I was playing around and on the offchance i searched for my company name 'safarinow' on wikipedia...

Not expecting to find anything i found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dewet/safarinow.com

I see you have been having to remove reference to 'safarinow' in the past, just ti let you know that i have no idea who has been adding the references, we don't authorise this kind of spammy stuff. We have a large affiliate program, so it could have been an affiliate.

Anyway sorry for the hassle, please don't blacklist us or something!

Regards Matthew Director, SafariNow.com http://www.safarinow.com/cms/about-us/irie.aspx

RfA

Okies, I put my comments up. Others have pretty much said it already, but I tried to explain as best as I could. Anyway, cheers! Master of Puppets That's hot. 16:20, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Great design you use on your user/talk pages; I've gratuitously stolen and adapted it for my own pages :) dewet| 23:58, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

No problem. I hope it serves you well. joturner 00:02, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

On Stellenbosch

Hi Dewet, I suppose I have been full circle on Wikipedia now and I have come to realize that some things do not get done by others, and others do.. I learned how to use Popups from you, and I know you are around.. Thanks and cheers Gregorydavid 11:54, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Deleted article

Hi, I see you noticed this issue relating to Kees Bruynzeel. Do you concur that it qualifies for a Netherlands Bio Sub relating to Stellenbosch and South Africa? If you can access it I am sure you will agree. Thank you Gregorydavid 15:48, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

WP is acting up, and I can't view/edit your talk page so I hope you're watching here ;) Yes, I do believe that it would qualify. Do you maybe have a copy (crossing fingers) that I can look at, and if need be we'll work on it to be a proper bio stub. dewet| 15:54, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
I have temporarily restored the Kees page under User:Gregorydavid/Kees so that we can review it. I would say that one should put his most important assertion(s) of notability (such as winning the yacht race) in the introductory paragraph, to prevent his notability being questioned. Regards, Elf-friend 06:23, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, after a "speedy-proof" version of the article has been completed, I see no problem with just recreating the article, after all it would probably be substantially different, and not just a plain recreation. I will then delete the temporary page. Kind Regards, Elf-friend 07:17, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I have added a few things, but I agree, if somebody now wants to delete it for whatever reason, they will have to go to AfD, at least. It would probably be the best if somebody (re)created the article by cutting and pasting it ... I considered moving it but that would probably destroy the page history. I can then delete the temp file. Kind Regards, Elf-friend 07:21, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Your admin candidacy

Hello there, sorry for the neutral vote. I suppose I should explain that I tend to think being an admin is a silly function. I don't think good editors should be admins, I think people who want to perform administrative tasks should be admins. Your responses didn't indcate to me that you were that interested in performing any administration tasks. Was I wrong? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 06:41, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Please see my response

Answered there as well. dewet| 13:49, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I had thought that you had decided the GA nomination of that article failed because of the reference style. I now see that it is still on the nom list. My misunderstanding. See you. ike9898 22:02, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Photos

Hey Dewet you live in Stellenbosch, right? I'm seriously trying to get the Cape Town article up to Featured Status, but we really need some more images. Could you maybe take some of the main train station and another MetroRail station? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 16:44, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Naturally there are better candidates, it's Cape Town for chirssakes! :) But I need some more photos for the transport section of the CT article. Someone uploaded a new image of the N2 that's great, but it doesn't have any licencing so it has to go. So maybe one of the train station, one of the N2, maybe one of M2 or the Ou Kaapseweg? One of the airport would be great, too. Oh, and one of the Convention Centre like this one Image:CTICC.jpg. And maybe one of the Media24 Building or someone selling newspapers on the street corner, maybe on a big intersection? Something off of Buitengracht?. Not too much, I hope! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 17:04, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Great, that'll be fantastic. It's a shame you weren't available when I was last in CT. It would have been fun to have met up. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 17:23, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen

Thank you for contributing this article! I have announced it in the stubs section of Portal:Germany/New article announcements. If you write more about Bach cantatas, please add your articles to our announcement page. Thank you, and happy editing! Kusma (討論) 20:00, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

I read Special:Newpages quite often. Whenever I see something that looks German, I check it and add it to our announcement page. I think I'll add de:Gott ist mein König to my to-do list, the high point of my extremely short choir career, I will probably translate it over the weekend. Good luck with the rest of the cantatas! I have translated this article (a bit later than I promised, but I spent most of last weekend getting Georg Forster featured). RE: reverting vandalism in Seychelles & your new list

Sure I'll fix it. I was just reverting the edit by the person who continually spams links into the page, must have overlapped your edit Fyver528 14:56, 7 June 2006 (UTC) & in relation to the above comment; I'm half Seychellois, and lived there. I agree with Dewet.

Update - Can you please do the revert yourself (I have no objections), as I'm not sure exactly which one you want doing. In case of 3RR I say that this is a special circumstance.
Don't worry about it, you have my support in helping clean up the page, I watch it constantly, for some reason its quite a target for vandalism and spam. Cheers. Fyver528 15:09, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Milestone tool

Hi Dewet, you're right - the tool was totally broken, due to an oversight on my part. Thanks for pointing it out! It should be fixed now; but note that the toolserver is currently suffering from database corruption for the English Wikipedia. The database will be fixed when the server gets new disks, but I'm not sure when this will occur. Anyway, the milestones for all other projects (even the Asian wikis) are working correctly, so I hope you can put the tool to some use. Cheers, Tangotango 07:39, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

The corruption meant that some of the articles and edits were not matching up in the database (the IDs were strange, for some reason). This affected the milestone tool quite severely, as it needs an exact count of edits to be of any use. However, we're in luck - DaB., one of the administrators of the toolserver, has started replaying the enwiki database to fix it. The process may take several hours, even days, and during this, the data may be considerably wrong. So, we should expect some good results in a couple of days or so. :D Tangotango 16:11, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Another new Bach cantata article that just appeared. Do you have a good idea what to do with the full text? Please take a look, Kusma (討論) 18:57, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Cape Town FAC

Well, it's done. I listed Cape Town as a featured article candidate. Take a look on its FAC page and have a vote. Thanks! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 06:13, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

PDF file Ceres, South Africa

I was just messing around. (I had just discovered I could make PDF files). I doubt making PDF files for past versions of articles would be a significant addition to most articles. Certainly not Ceres, South Africa. I will remove the image and link. Fred Bauder 19:14, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Seasons v Seasons

A disruption to solstice and season occurred when a third-party uploader replaced Seasons.jpg with what is now Seasons_(Nadia_Russ).jpg. I have since re-uploaded the image to the latter location and reverted Seasons.jpg to the diagram of the Earth's seasons covered by NASA's PD policies. However, I have no idea what the license status is on the Nadia Russ file - as it was originally uploaded using a PD image's placeholder as a "shield" against deletion - and have not been able to reach the uploading member. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Orethrius 02:58, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Nadia Russ

From what I've been able to nail down from her contact page, Ms. Russ can apparently be contacted at neopoprealism1ATyahooDOTcom. Would it be a wise decision to bring this to her attention and request display permissions for her work "not for the defacement thereof, rather for the edification of the community through peer review" noting that should she object or not comment, automated procedures will remove the files within seven days of the initial uploading, making her mini-biography rather threadbare? I'd hate to see such helpful artwork lost to the sands of time if the artist has no objections - though it may pay to reference Newsweek, the Post, or any other positive mass media coverage of Wikipedia. She apparently has IM coverage, as well, but I'm holding off on contacts until I have a clear idea of what I should say if anything at all. Additionally, the article is an absolute MESS - I'm going to attempt to tackle it tomorrow. Orethrius 11:14, 18 June 2006 (UTC) (re-signed Orethrius 11:24, 18 June 2006 (UTC))

Hookah article vandalism

I just wanted to let you know that someone is removing information from an article on the Hookah. I'm new to editing and I wasn't able to figure out how to revert. Adding back all the info would be more difficult, and I might miss something. So as the last person to edit the article before the vandalism I thought I'd let you know. --Knuckle Bean 06:14, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
