Ways to improve Akira Watanabe (chess)

[edit]

Hello, Ebefl,

Thank you for creating Akira Watanabe (chess).

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

This article needs more references to satisfy notability for sport, Chess in particular. The requirements are found at WP:NCHESS.
At present, due the article not meeting NCHESS, it has to meet general notability, which it does not.
General notability requires references about this PERSON, not how to learn Spanish, not Bobby Fisher, nor introduction to Chess.
What is needed are references from significant coverage about the topic of the article, and independent of it, in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS; that is your guide. You may also read WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources. A more comprehensive guide is WP:SOURCES ... Providing sufficient references, ideally one per fact referred to, that meet these tough criteria is likely to allow this article to remain. Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that the topic is not suitable for inclusion. Kindly do the needful. Thank you.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Whiteguru}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

This page is a direct translation of the Japanese page for this player/author. I'm not sure why that page is not cited as having issues but this one is. Are the standards different in different langauges? Ebefl (talk) 07:08, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ebefl. I'm not sure whether you're still around. Since your question is more than two years old, perhaps you already know that the answer is "yes": each local Wikipedia project is separate and distinct from one another in the sense that each has its own respective policies and guidelines as well as its own communities applying and enforcing such guidelines. English Wikipedia is the largest and oldest of the various projects, and many of the other language Wikipedias have modeled their policies and guidelines on those of it. Even though there can be lots of similarities, there can, however, also some important differences. In addition, since the English Wikipedia community tends to be the most active and largest of the various communities, its policies and guidelines tend to be more vigorously applied and enforced than perhaps is done by other communities with respect to their projects. To make a long story short, just because an article exists on another language Wikipedia doesn't automatically mean (1) that it should exist there and (2) a translated version of it should exist on English Wikipedia. What's needed for an article about this person to exist on English Wikipedia is for it to be clearly established that the subject meets WP:N (WP:NBIO for biographies), and the article is at risk of ending up deleted as long as the subject's Wikipedia notability is unclear. See WP:OTHERLANGS for some more information.
Finally, while it's allowed to translate non-English Wikipedia articles into English per WP:TRANSLATE, Wikipedia's licensing requires that proper attribution be given to the source article per WP:TFOLWP and a failure to do so is technically considered a "copyright violation". So, if this is truly a translation of a Japanese Wikipedia, you should try to fix the lack of attribution. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:10, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
