Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Joeoffer. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Rise Up Singing, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Since you state [1] that you were the Associate Editor for the Rise Again Songbook you have a conflict of interest. Meters (talk) 03:19, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. As far as I can see, the "revision history" lists nobody who was part of the production of the songbook. I did not edit the article at all. -Joe Offer- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joeoffer (talkcontribs) 04:23, February 3, 2019 (UTC)
You need to reread what I wrote. I did not say that you had edited Rise Again (songbook). I said that you had edited Rise Up Singing, which you did. Your edits were not a big deal at all (just a helpful attempt to correct a link to the originators' website, if I remember correctly), but because you worked on the followup book you have a potential conflict of interest on both articles. I was just letting you know that you need to be careful with any edits pertaining to these books.
You have no idea who has edited these article. Wikipedia user names do not have to be real names, and users may edit using anonymous IPs. It means nothing that you do not recognize any editors' names as those of people who were associated with the book's production. And, as I tried to explain on Talk:Rise Again (songbook), the paid editor tag on that article concerns WP:PAID editing of this Wikipedia article [i.e. Rise Again (songbook)], not whether people were paid to create the book. We don't care whether the book was an unpaid volunteer effort or a professionally written, edited, and published product. We are not saying that anyone from the book's production team contributed to the article, and we are not concerned with whether or not the producers of the book received any remuneration. We're saying that it appears that someone was paid to write the article without disclosing that fact, a serious violation. The editor in question user:375mon was later blocked indefinitely by user:Huon, who stated that there was ironclad off-wiki evidence that this user was an undisclosed paid editor.
