Flow Newsletter

Hey Jtmorgan. I'm dropping you a note to let you know (or remind you) about Flow, the structured discussion system for Wikipedia that we're building. You may have heard about some of the longer-term vision for Flow in the past, but in the last two months we've been moving quickly to narrow down the short-term scope of the project, and we're keen to get feedback.

First: we've written up an explanation of the "minimum viable product" – the set of features that will be in the first, on-wiki deployment. Because discussions on Wikipedia are complex and varied, we're approaching Flow development as an incremental process of uncovering user needs for different types of discussion. The first release will be limited to a few WikiProject talkpages only, with the goal of testing out our first stab at peer-to-peer discussion functionality and improving it based on feedback from the WikiProject members who use it. If you've got any thoughts on the MVP, or on the philosophy we're trying to follow with this software, let us know on the Flow talkpage. If you know of a WikiProject that might be interested in testing this out, let Maryana know on her talkpage :)

Second: we're having a set of discussions around some experimental features we'll be trying in the first release. These include indenting and nesting of comments and comment editing. If you've got any practical thoughts on these, we'd appreciate hearing them. For background and feedback on the design, there are the ongoing set of design iteration notes, a Design FAQ, and a page for design feedback.

The software prototype is still in early development, and changing daily in small ways, with major goals updating every 2 weeks. If you've got comments about other bits of the software, we'll be holding an IRC office hours session in #wikimedia-office at 18:00 UTC on 17 November to talk about Flow as a whole, and fielding questions on the talkpage before and after then.

Third: this is a pre-newsletter announcement of a new WP:Flow/Newsletter signup page! If you'd like further updates, details, and requests for input, please add your name there.

Thanks, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:56, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Due to multiple-human-error (the best kind of error!) the Office Hours meeting was announced with the wrong month. The logs for today's (quiet) meeting, can be seen at m:IRC office hours#Office hour logs.
The updated time and date of our next IRC office hours meeting is: 18:00 UTC on 24 October. Thanks, and sorry about the mixup. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:37, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

UW- MLIS Program interested in Wikipedia contact

Hi JTmorgan,

I'm the WiR at the Metropolitan New York Library Council in New York. I have been in touch with a current MLIS student in her last year at UW that is interested in having a Wikipedia meeting or session at the UW Masters in Library Science program. Could you send me your email so I could get in touch? Lane Rasberry told me that you were a good Seattle contact, as did Pine. Cheers! OR drohowa (talk) 15:28, 23 October 2013 (UTC) (UTC) Email me here.

HI OR drohowa! I'm happy to chat with anyone interested in Wikipedia. The first thing to do is suggest that interested students attend the Seattle Wikipedia Research Hackathon on November 9th, which I'm coordinating. And if folks want to talk to other Seattle Wikipedians, there's a monthly meetup at Cafe Alegro, right off campus. There are also quite a few people at the iSchool who are Wikipedia researchers & contributors. I'll followup off-wiki with some names and more info. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 21:37, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Not updating checkins

The bot doesn't seem to be updating the check in page... -- t numbermaniac c 06:46, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi numbermaniac, yeah I had disabled checkins a few weeks ago because of a persistent bug. I've described a potential fix here. Hopefully this resolves the problem! Thanks, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 20:16, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

HostBot misfire

[1]. User in question was indef blocked (account creation blocked, email disabled, cannot edit own talk page) and therefore probably won't ever be able to use the Teahouse because the roads to appeal left are so small (and the user's contributions have all been vaproized). Can you add a check to not send out teahouse invites if the user is indef blocked? Hasteur (talk) 20:51, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Hasteur. The bot does this already... or had been doing so relatively consistently, until recently. I made a change to the invite script the other week, based on a similar incident. That change may have actually exacerbated the problem. I've rolled it back. This may or may not fix the problem--the logging table HostBot pulls blocked users from may just lag sometimes, meaning that a few blocks will occasionally be missed. Or, there may be some other bug that I haven't found yet. Anyway, I'm working on it. Lmk if you see more cases like this. Thanks, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 22:10, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
Hrm... What does hostbot use for it's programming? If it's semi-interactive it might be able to poke the api (example) to see if the user is blocked. If the blockexpiry = infinity then you could skip the user. Hasteur (talk) 16:29, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Yo! HostBot is written in Python, hosted on Wikimedia Labs, and uses MYSQL for storage and retrieval (although I do hit the API for some tasks). I've been skipping invites to users who have had any blocks, actually, no matter what the expiry. Mostly that's to avoid frustrating vandal fighters: I try to err on the side of caution. The reason the bot occasionally slips up, I believe, is that the replica db it uses sometimes lags behind the production database that blocks are logged in. You're correct that checking the API would probably yield more up-to-date information, and prevent a few false negatives.
Interestingly, this may all be a moot point soon. I'm currently working with EpochFail to transition HostBot to pulling potential invitees from the Snuggle database. That program maintains a daily log of new users who are likely to be editing in good faith: it uses smarter selection criteria that include filtering out blocked users. I'd love to get this going in the next couple weeks. Anyway, thanks again for watching the bot, and definitely ping me with any updates or questions. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:32, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Let me guess, you're reaching into the replication databases. I've discovered that the repDBs are up to 8 hours stale. For User:HasteurBot, there was a task I was working on to grab transclusions of a specific template, and I was getting results that were 8 hours old (or worse) from the replication DB. That's why I used the front side API/Search to to my solution. Hasteur (talk) 18:56, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Yep. It's our good friend replag :) But see my comment about switching to a better sampling procedure that may obviate the problem. If I don't end up going that route, I will do as you suggest and add an api check function into the codebase. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 19:35, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Blocked users

Would it be possible to tweak the bot a bit so it doesn't do this. It's not a big deal but looks a little odd. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 23:03, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up, CambridgeBayWeather. The bot does check for blocked users, but unfortunately it may not be always able to avoid messaging users who have been blocked within such close proximity to the time of invitation: it takes time for the block log table to update, and for the messaging script to run. That said, I'll see if there's an easy way to work around the lag issue. And if you see HostBot messages on pages for users who were blocked more than, say, an hour or two beforehand, please let me know since the current code should be specifically avoiding that scenario. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 00:24, 7 December 2013 (UTC)r

Host bot adventure invitations

A few admins, including myself noted the huge volume of edits that HostBot made inviting users to the Wikipedia adventure. As far as we could tell your bot only has authorization "~100 edits per day". Do you know why it made so many edits so rapidly? It appears to have made around 500 in an hour. NativeForeigner Talk 18:51, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Hey User:NativeForeigner. I think our paperwork is in order. Here are the relevant notifications for the invite increases (1, 2). The pilot is set to run through Thursday, 12/19, after which the bot will not send any more invites until a new bot request has been filed and approved. If you have any concerns about who the bot is inviting, or notice a new bug, let me know and I'll fix it ASAP. And User:Ocaasi if you have any other types of questions. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 19:00, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Hey, J-Mo,

I was just visiting the Teahouse:Monthly Metrics pages and the latest information is from August 2013 and it is supposed to be updated monthly. Since it is December 5th, maybe it could update to November stats? Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 22:59, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Want to become member of tea house

hello there! I want to become member of tea house. Can you please add my name in the list ? Nechlison (talk) 08:30, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Nechlison. No one person is in charge of the Teahouse; it's more of a consensus thing. You're welcome to create a Host profile for yourself. FYI: sometimes, when a brand-new editor such as yourself signs up to be a host, other Teahouse hosts will temporarily remove your profile, usually with a note that says something like "Thanks! Come back when you have a little more experience". This isn't intended to be a snub, or make you feel unwelcome: the host profiles are there as a resource for newcomers who visit the Teahouse. We want to make sure that when they reach out to Hosts through their profiles, they reach someone who is around, and that they get good advice and such. So be bold and sign up. If you get reverted, just answer questions for a while, edit some articles, and in general try to learn the ropes of Wikipedia (it's a complex place). Then add yourself back as an "official" host in a few weeks. Welcome to Wikipedia & happy editing... - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 01:47, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Perfect! /Fluff (talk) 21:12, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Woot! Talk to you then. Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 21:42, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Hey Fluff, I added a short description of the HostBot invitee database table here. Let me know if this is suitable to your needs? I can always add more information. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 02:17, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! /Fluff (talk) 07:16, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Making slow progress here but isn't there some database tables missing? A "SHOW CREATE TABLE" would really help for all tables. And in the git repository I'm asuming that the hostbot_settings.py is missing due to private information but a dummy would be helpful, even if I have created one for myself. /Fluff (talk) 13:05, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Fluff. I've added a sample settings file to the repo. As you can see, it's just used to store username/password, and a few other default settings. As for the other tables: I'll work on adding schemas for those tables to the repo documentation. But depending on your goals, you may not need them (at least not right away). Inviting new editors is by far the most important function of HostBot—everything else is, as they say, gravy :) Mostly, I used those other tables for logging activity (how many questions asked, how many newcomers visited, etc), rather than for maintaining basic functionality. Because TH started as a research project, we needed to keep track of how people used it. Do you plan on doing the same? Perhaps we should have another IRC chat, so I can get a sense of what's blocking you and where I can provide the most help over the next few weeks. Happy new year! - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 21:00, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Running https://github.com/jtmorgan/hostbot/blob/master/scripts/frontend/reporting/teahouseinvitees.py on line 88 there's a reference to the column "invited" which doesn't exists in the table you've laid out. Is it invite_status that should be referenced? /Fluff (talk) 22:15, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
Mmm. Yes, I introduced a dependency recently, and I had forgotten about it. You will need to remove AND user_id NOT IN (SELECT user_id FROM twa_up_invitees WHERE invited = 1) from Lines 88 and 118 in teahouseinvitees.py. I had added that clause in order to prevent overlap between users invited to the Teahouse and those invited to play The Wikipedia Adventure. I was tracking TWA invites in the table twa_up_invitees. There is also a field hostbot_personal (which contains legacy data that I need , but you don't) which exists in the live table but not in the schema I posted for you. You'll need to remove references to that column from the queries in teahouse_invitees.py (in the same two insert queries as the dependency above) and hostbotInvites.py (line 15). I looked through the three invite scripts, and those are the only inconsistencies I found, but there may be more. Sorry it makes for slow going. I'll keep responding to questions here. And if you want to formally fork the HB repo and make me a collaborator on GitHub, I can help more directly. Cheers Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 21:27, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for continued effort to support me here. I've finally understood why there was more tables to it. Next up I wonder what the field hostbot_skipped does and how it is updated. I can't find any script that is updating that field. /Fluff (talk) 17:05, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
Ah yes. That field records whether HostBot found one of the skip templates on the potential invitees talkpage. The talkpagecheck method grabs the wikitext for each potential invitee's talkpage and checks to make sure they haven't received a Teahouse invitation already (from an editor, for example), or a serious warning, which would indicate that they're editing in bad faith. It does this by checking for key words in the text of the talk page. If it finds an offending template, it records hostbot_skipped = 1 in the database table and doesn't send that user an invite. Keep the questions coming! Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:27, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Since "subst" doesn't work inside edit summaries, could the bot's code set the edit summary explicitly to make the talk page history look more friendly? -- John of Reading (talk) 21:15, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi John. That sounds sensible. I've updated the code, and it seems to be working. Let me know if you see something funny, or if something goes wrong. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 03:06, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

HostBot and vandals

I found this rather funny: [3]. First we warn the vandal, then we offer a tea. A bit like those cartoons where even Tom & Jerry stop chasing each other and drink a tea together at 5 pm, when they're in UK. --Nemo 08:07, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

How genteel of us. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:18, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
How about this one where the vandal has already been blocked before being invited? Shouldn't the bot avoid inviting at least those who have been blocked? Meters (talk) 01:40, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
Meters, the bot checks usernames against the recent block log before sending an invite, but there is a short but somewhat unpredictable lag between when the user is blocked, when that block shows up on the Labsdb replica table, and between when the bot checks the table and the invite is sent. This user was blocked a mere 14 minutes before they received their invite. I suspect lag is the culprit. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 21:12, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I didn't notice the very short time lag. Meters (talk) 22:58, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

HostBot invitations to alt

I think maybe the HostBot could not invite users when the Alternative account template is on the page? See my talk page for an example. These are people who probably don't need inviting. Stuartyeates (code test) (talk) 19:39, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Invite to indef blocked vandal?

[4] Enigmamsg 14:59, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Enigma. Looks like the enwikiDB on Labs has stopped replicating[5] due to an error, so this user's block didn't appear in the logging tables. I'm going to halt Teahouse invites until the database is up and running again. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 22:43, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on your user page, User talk:Hastabachpan, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be blatant advertising which only promotes or publicises a company, product, group or service, and which is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages; user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

If you can indicate why the page is not blatant advertising, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: Click here to contest this speedy deletion which appears inside of the speedy deletion () tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy deletion candidate). Doing so will take you to your user talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also edit this page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would help make it encyclopedic. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Katieh5584 (talk) 09:30, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Researcher

Hi

Does researcher allow you to view deleted articles and if so how do you apply? Valoem talk contrib 03:13, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi User:Valoem. Researcher lets you view the metadata associated with deleted revisions: revid, revuser, revtimestamp, revcomment. It doesn't allow you to view the content of deleted revisions. It's kind of a bespoke userright created a few years ago for some research interns. I don't believe it's currently maintained (there's no formal process for requesting it that I know of). That said, I don't see why you couldn't request it. Probably the best thing to do is to either: send an email to analytics@lists.wikimedia.org (subscribe here) or to ping Dario Taraborelli (DarTar) on #wikimedia-research connect. He may not be around much this week (he's at a conference) but he usually hangs out there. Hope that helps! Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:24, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

TWA data pull

Hey J-mo,

I would love to do another TWA descriptive data analysis this month, just like we did last time but considering all editors who have been invited to TWA since we started up until May 1. It's probably 80,000 invites and about 800 who have finished the game. This would be good to look at long term behavior and retention. I'm also giving a talk at the "premier gamification event" GSummit on June 12 and would love to have updated comprehensive metrics to report. What do you think? Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 03:34, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

I think I can do that. Let me try to have it for you by end of next week. Feel free to nag me here or on IRC between now and then. It keeps me motivated :) - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:26, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi J-mo! Thanks for taking on this second round of database digging. You have a deal, sir. Not only may you be a trusted, two-time, gold-standard analyst, but also a data teacher/mentor/professor/guru. Ocaasi t | c 12:44, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

I came from the Teahouse and I was told you people like you can HELP! May you Please Help me

Hi, I'm a Wikipedia user/editor and I like to say Hi! Nice to meet you.

I wanted your help with the Wikipedia article Dominant minority when I first discovered the page it was detailed and had large amounts of info like a list of examples of dominant minorities across the world and someone went with their audacity to eliminate most of the information around 90 something % and left it a measly husk of an article with only one tiny paragraph left in its place. Now I can't fix the problem because I don't remember everything that was in the article before it was messed with by whomever.

Hi Michelle here. 2016 approaches and centenary of Rising in Ireland. My grandfather Michael Comyn KC has been written about in certain books recently and I want share details with Wiki. I have errors and don't know what to do. I need a little help and patience. I sustained ABI so memory is a problem and lots of effort for me to enter data. Can somebody assist me. I live in Dublin. HostBot grabs recent questions off the Teahouse questions page, and copies them into a set of pages under WP:Teahouse/Questions-recent. In the case you are referring to, it grabbed this question. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 21:56, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

A request about your signature.

Hey there J-Mo, I don't suppose I could convince you to update your signature to be up-to-date with HTML5, can I? If so, I suggest replacing:

- J-Mo <font color="gold">Talk to Me</font> <font color="purple">Email Me</font>

with:

- J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me

which will result in a 166 character long signature (14 characters shorter) with an appearance of: - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me

compared to your existing 180 character long signature of: - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me

— Either way. Happy editing! — Technical 13 (etc) 22:07, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
