I need help with adding references and notes. I tried to improve the article by adding proper validation, however, some of the material needed to be put under references instead of being added to the body of the text. Now the reference numbers are mixed up and I can't figure out how to fix it.

The details presented in this article are presented for historical reference. I have provided the most accurate information I can find. The fitness craze in the USA during the 1980s is historically relevant. DeBarra Mayo's name emerged during that time for her health and fitness related writings. The intention of presenting this article is for historical reference and updated information about DeBarra Mayo and her ongoing contributions to health and fitness awareness in the USA.

It is wonderful news that you are so enthusiastic and I think you will have some valuable material to add in your field of interest. As I think you've already discovered, there are people willing to help out, and you've got some more exprerienced wikipedians to turn to now. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong when I try to add references. I make them but either they don't work or the numbers are wrong. Am I supposed to type the reference under the level 2 heading?

Also, should I put an external link in the body of a text, or with the tool bar above as I type this, or is it best to put it at the bottom.

As for references, usually a <ref>(insert link here)</ref> tag is used right after the sentence to be verified. Nike etc

I think the recent concerns you raised are not significant in the article. It doesn't give any implication that Nike is ongoing. It just says it happened at once point. The bit about the website is also not of great import. These things might be important to the subject of the article, but not to the reader or the editor. Don't worry, you're not the only one stuck in the '80s. I remember that Jefferson Starship song very well. I could hear it in my head as soon as you mentioned it! By the way, just a tip I thought to mention to you when I was copyediting one of your articles. When you mention an American location, such as Morgantown, West Virginia, it's best to write the state fully, rather than Morgantown WV. No worries. I should add that there's also a technical reason for it. The abbreviated location, eg Morgantown, WV, goes to a redirect page first. If you click on that you'll see at the top left corner, under the heading, it says "(Redirected from Morgantown, WV)". But if you click on Morgantown, West Virginia it goes straight to the article page. After a while, you'll notice that wiki-style prefers the direct routing. how to wikify

Hi, the template you're looking for is {{wikify}}, or {{wikify-date|August 2006}} (Change the month/year as appropriate). The date refers to the date you tagged the article. I have deleted this article. It can always be undeleted, but we need to talk about this. Please hold your horses a bit for now. Get the feel of things by doing smaller edits on other articles, and also seeing what makes for notability. You might want to participate in some WP:AfD discussions to open your eyes to the fate that can await. For ease of use that sort of question (which isn't about the article) is probably best left on a user talk page... Nobody sees it until you reply to that person, and then they see it (because you've sent them an email), but no one else. Your IP address may be visible in the header (to that particualar person only), but if you open a dedicated account on www.gmail.com (free) nobody will. DeBarra Mayo referencing

Would you be able to go through this with a fine toothcomb, referencing every single thing that you can. See Anna Svidersky for tight referencing, and also in the notes at the bottom the format for citations, with author, year, newspaper article title, etc. Page number not needed for newspaper, but is needed for book ref. You have put a reference for this. The reference goes to Dr Gibson's page. This does not mention Mayo, so it is not a proper reference for the statement, as it does not prove the truth of the statement, namely that Mayo assisted there, which is what we are concerned with in this article. Wikify tag / Redirecting pages

I see that you are a newbie. :) And I know we have lots and lots of templates for cleanup, so I thought I'd explain the wikify tag. Putting it on an article means that the article is not formatted properly, i.e. 0 or few very words are linked, it's not in any categories or it has bad formatting. Well, the Ali MacGraw page is well formatted and has no mistakes. Does it need work? Probably. But that is better utilized by one of the cleanup tags, not the wikify tag. Here is a list of the cleanup tags. In the case of the MacGraw article, the expand tag might work best. It's on that page.

Also, as for redirects, you had said that you don't know how to do them. All you need to do is to go to the redirect you want to create (in this case, you would search for "Ali Macgraw" and then click on the red link it gives you). Then you would type in #REDIRECT: [[Ali MacGraw]]. Easy as that. I'll leave it to you to make the redirect so you can see how it's done. And if you don't do it right, you can always edit the page until you get it right. I've been at this for nearly 2 years and I learned most of my skills on here through trial and error. Multiple referencing

Ok, here's how to do it. The very first time the reference appears in the article, it looks something like this:

Please note the important bit at the beginning:

Whenever you next want to use this particular reference in the article, all you have to type is this bit with a slash in it:

If you don't type the slash, the rest of the article will not be visible when you upload it!

To get these then to appear in the appropriate place, but the following below the "see also" section and above the "external links" section:

or a variation such as:

If books are cited, then these should be listed under a section "References", the references in the text to page numbers of the book with the author's name, and the "Notes and references" section should be called instead "Footnotes".

I noticed that you have removed red links from some pages, such as Ali McGraw and Heather Locklear. Red links often serve a useful purpose, indicating articles that need to be written, and links such as the ones you removed generally should be left alone (among other things, once these articles eventually get written, people are unlikely to restore the links promptly). Thanks for your comment about my dog. The funny thing is, he's actually a 14-year-old! Most people think he looks like a puppy and are really surprised when I tell them he's really 98 in dog years! He still loves playing and acts very puppyish so I find it very easy to forget he's not a puppy anymore.

Hi! In order to get alternative spellings to go to that article, you have to create redirects. You do this by typing in the alternative spelling that you want to go to the page, then click on the redlink for that name, then for that new page type #REDIRECT [[Ali MacGraw]] and save the page. Referencing

Please study the comments above in "DeBarro Mayo referencing". For example this reference "chief instructor Salvadore Convento, [3]" links to the web page for the institution but is not a reference for Mayo, as it does not show her on the page as an instructor, so should be removed. You might like to check for similar instances. The reference must prove the statement, or it is not a proper reference.

I've had a look at Erich Schiffer. That was a very useful contribution. I've formatted the refs and you might like to check the diffs in the edit history to see what needed to be done.

Sometimes I hit the navigation button on the left called "Random article". This takes you to a completely random Wiki article. I find if you hit it a few times (at the most) you'll find an article that needs some basic editing, such as spelling or grammar errors, basic formatting, wiki-linking various words, adding cats, adding some sources etc. You could try doing this if you're ever looking for something to do. You write well, so I'm sure you'd be excellent at that kind of copyediting.
I, too, was very upset about the Steve Irwin tragedy. My heart aches for his poor children and for the other children in the world who loved him and thought of him as their "Superman".

Accessed date

This is the date you actually looked at a web site to get the info. If the web site changes or becomes defunct it may be possible to use a site called waybackmachine to access a past version from that date.

If you're stuck with coding, just find another article which has something similar to what you want, go into edit mode, copy the code and adapt it to what you want. Then just close the page you've copied, without bothering to save it.

Where have you seen that? If you aren't sue on the usage you probably don't need to worry about it. Generally speaking an ndash is a typographical term for a dash which is the width on a capital N, similary mdash the width of a capital M.

The manual of style contains most information on such matters. They are guidelines so not necessarily uniformly used and indeed if there is a good reason to ignore them you can. For dashes there is a specific section --pgk 15:26, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Typically m dash is used in text, with or without a space either side (although n dash can be), n dash between dates, normal hypen on keyboard in a hyphenated word (I think that's right). Tyrenius 15:51, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Under the heading ==References== list the books, e.g.:

Under the heading ==Footnotes== put the usual code, i.e. <references/>. Then in the text put the reference, as per usual footnotes:
