Hi! I have some notes on the article content!

  • Make sure that you avoid writing in an essay style. This is probably one of the hardest things to get used to on Wikipedia, to be honest - it certainly was for me, since it's the writing style that we're all the most used to. I've made a bit of a tweak to the lead as an example. This paragraph needs to be tweaked. One of the ways to get around this would be to find the most basic information that you're trying to impart and write sort of a basic-ish paragraph.
With the health effects of increased exposure to heavy technological use being now compared to the use of drugs, smoking, and alcohol[4], there needs to consideration to users that are vulnerable. Adults have had the luxury of growing up without the ubiquitous presence of technology and now an unintended social experiment with unknown consequences is occurring with the easily accessible availability of screen media to our youth.[5] Getting children off of screens is not an easy task as reported in 2004 that an average American child spends just 50 minutes a week of outdoor time[6], since then that number must not have done much better. This is also a world were schools such as the Los Angeles School District are making multi-million dollar investments to get wireless digital devices in the schools[7] Looking forward, strong conversation about the ethics of technology use and what type of accessibility to technology best serves our interests needs to be discussed before there is no opportunity for a conversation.
The main points are basically these:
  1. Health effects of exposure to heavy tech use are compared with substance abuse and smoking.
  2. This is primarily impacting younger users who have grown up with technology as a standard.
  3. It's shown to be difficult to restrict use, especially as American children spend less time outdoors.
We can't use the narrative flow and style that we would with writing, so what we have needs to be more cut and dry. Any major claims need to be attributed, especially if they sound like an opinion. So arranging the material a little, we have something like this:
Researchers from the University of Sydney have reported that an increased exposure to and use of technology has led to a negative health effects that are comparable to the use of drugs, smoking, and alcohol.[1] Adults who have grown up without technology being ubiquitous in their lives have been shown to be less at risk of showing adverse effects and becoming a Digital Zombie as younger users are, as they have easier access and likelihood of interacting with screen media.[2] Studies have also shown that children spend less time outdoors and more time on the Internet and technological devices, which has made it difficult to limit time spent on these devices.[3][4]
This is a bit spartan in comparison, but is more straightforward and is less likely to be seen as an essay.
  • Be careful with sources. What you have here isn't bad, but always check and see if there are academic and scholarly sources available since those are typically seen as the stronger sources. However since this term is seen as fairly new (all things considered), I know that they're going to be harder to find. Something you may find interesting and want to add to the article is this definition of a digital zombie.

A lot of this is just basically tweaking and rephrasing at this point, so I definitely want to say that I'm impressed that you went so above and beyond with your assignment! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:35, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I love the use of the image in the article - that looks great! My main concerns now center around the writing style - the writing is a little choppy, so it needs to be edited for flow. Also, make sure that you attribute any claims or theories to the persons or institutions making them, so they don't come across as personal observations.
