WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
  • England Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, Denmark MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Well wishes

Hey there, Lee Vilenski! It's been a while since you passed Kenny Omega for GA, so it's nice to speak with you again. I wanted to drop a quick thank you for your analysis here. I also saw that it was your birthday last week? Belated happy birthday to you! May you continue to prosper and find safety and creativity. KyleJoantalk 10:44, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi KuleJoan, thanks for the wishes. I had a great day (and got Masters tickets as well! I don't really think we should be allowing users to rollback others nominations, unless it's a drive-by, the user requests it or its clearly malformed/not intended. FWIW, I do think the article needs some work, but we need to be careful where we draw the administrative line from content creation and editors abilities to assess a work for if it is ready. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:43, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
That's wonderful! They're for next year's tournament, I assume? I can't wait to attend sporting events myself. The last one I attended was Double or Nothing in Las Vegas last year. Anyhoo, I completely agree with everything you're saying. The article does need work, but I really wanted a fair chance to gather productive input in a formal GA review, especially since many editors have worked hard to improve it. I understand not supporting a nomination, but for anyone to dismiss the work that has been put into it by saying that it deserves a quick fail is disheartening. KyleJoantalk 12:07, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Steven Gerrard

Hi there. Apart from the one that I have left a reply for I think that I have addressed the issues that you pointed out at Talk:Steven Gerrard/GA1. Could you have a look to see if it meets GA criteria? REDMAN 2019 (talk) 10:14, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Russian Five - GA review

Hi Lee. Thanks for reviewing Russian Five and suggesting improvements. I've managed to get back to the article recently, and addressed the issues you highlighted; I feel the article is much improved now due to your feedback. I did want to make a couple of comments and wasn't sure if this would be a better place, or the article talk page, but I settled on here, as you can also move this to Talk:Russian Five if you want, but I get the feeling the etiquette on moving things off article talk pages is different.

I didn't address just a handful of the things you pointed out, and I wanted to explain why. Below I copied your comments and added my explanations.

  • 11 of the sources are to the same source - This makes it seem like we have much more talking about the topic than we are.
It's true that the book "Russian Five" is cited 11 times. However, that's because the book contains a wealth of knowledge of the subject of the article, and I cited items from many different chapters. Also, there are now 25 other sources in the article. I do feel that 26 total sources is plenty.
  • Could you add some ISBNs and page numbers?
I added ISBNs. I have only the e-book, not the hard copy, and the page numbers change based on the size of the window that I use when reading the book in iBooks. There's no preview of the book available in Google Books. Also, Wikipedia:Good article criteria does not mention page numbers as a criterion.
  • The word "defect" is used here, and I have no idea why. The countries aren't at war
Defections from the Soviet Union to the United States during the Cold War were plentiful - we even have an entire category called "Soviet defectors to the United States" and a List of Soviet and Eastern Bloc defectors. Sources use the word "defect" with regards to the three players' journeys to the NHL.
  • The first image seem completely irrelevent.
All five players played in the jersey in that image before they came to the NHL. I didn't add the image originally, but I think it's relevant, so I left it.
  • Most of the article talks about 1990, and then jumps to 1997
I don't see this. The article talks about every single season, in some context, between 1988 and 1998. I don't know what jump you're referring to.

That's it. I think I addressed all of the rest of the issues you raised, and as I said, I think it improved the article quite a bit. I could not have done that without your critical eye, so thank you again. If you have the time, I would welcome any comments you have on this. JimKaatFan (talk) 05:50, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Adminship and Email

Hello! don't think we've interacted, but I've seen you around before, if not vice versa. =) Just saw your comment over at WT:RFA and was curious whether you think having email enabled is necessary to pass RFA - it's definitely beneficial, but I'm just not comfortable enabling it. I'm not planning an RFA, not quite there yet, but was curious nonetheless. Thanks in advance for your reply, looking forward to it! Cheers -- puddleglum2.0 21:41, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Puddleglum2.0 - I do remember you commented on my RfA! The short answer is no. But, when in the heat of the RfA you need to speak to your noms, the best place for this to happen is offwiki. That doesn't need to be email, but it helps.
It should be noted you don't give out your email until you reply to an email; so people can't just find your email without your consent. I think all individual talk about prospective noms should be handled offwiki. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 21:45, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks much for the reply and help! All the best -- puddleglum2.0 22:00, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Florian Nuble article name change

Florian Nuble is known by World Snooker and it's websites as Florian Nuessle. He is also listed as Nuessle on the World Snooker live scores site for the upcoming World Championship. Can you change the name on his profile page ?. Regards 89.204.238.11 (talk) 10:01, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi IP user - I don't think this is un-contentious. First - this isn't a profile page this is a biographical article on a person. Second - whatever the WST has him down as - we should refer to him by his actual name. Third - the article title could be changed, but you'd be best off creating an official WP:RM. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:23, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

So are you saying World Snooker is wrong that Nuessle is not his actual name ?. BTW I don't need a lecture from you on what wikipedia is I would say I have being editing on here longer than you have . 89.204.238.11 (talk) 10:55, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Well done on the long tenure. It's quite common for names to be translated for English organisations. In English we don't have the "üß", which is roughly approximated to "uess". I'd suggest that's likely why the change, but his birth name will be Nüßle. It's more common with European names, such as Eklent Kaçi who is sometimes called "Klenti Kline". I'd start a requested move if you think the target is wrong. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:35, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Jimmy White's 2: Cueball

The article Jimmy White's 2: Cueball you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Jimmy White's 2: Cueball for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Abryn -- Abryn (talk) 21:01, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
