Hello, OliverWang, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. Adding Lyrics

[edit]

Hi Oliver and welcome! Just a note on adding song lyrics: because they're usually copyrighted (unless very old... like the 1920s) they can't be directly added to articles. The only thing we can do is to link to them on MetroLyrics, which is a lyric database that is properly licensed with the record companies to do that. Linking most anywhere else is a copyright problem too. If you look at the article If You're Gone (The Byrds song), you'll see I added them to the External Links section at the bottom. That's the only way we're allowed to link to lyrics to avoid copyright problems.

Feel free to ask me anything (about lyrics, copyright, or anything else Wikipedia related), either here or on my Talk page (Click "Caw). Thanks! CrowCaw 16:04, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the helpful description for OliverWang on this Crow. Very helpful. --- FULBERT (talk) 14:08, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Song lyrics

[edit]

Hi, I received a notification that you had posted some content that had previously been published elsewhere. The content has been removed by another editor (Crow), however I wanted to give you a head's up about lyrics and copyright on Wikipedia. We can't post song lyrics on Wikipedia due to copyright reasons, as almost all songs are held under a copyright that isn't compatible with Wikipedia. While we can do small quotes on Wikipedia it becomes a bit more difficult with song lyrics, as songs are longer than books, articles, and the like - which means that it becomes far easier to run afoul of copyright.

The general rule of thumb is to not list song lyrics on Wikipedia and to instead link to them in the external links section of an article. I've tagged Crow on this so they can add to my explanation. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:13, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
