Merging

[edit]

Hello, PBP, I would like to remind you that after you complete the merges for Rainier Wolfcastle, etc. that you follow through with the instructions at Help:Merging. Specifically, things like adding a template, removing the proposed merge notices, and adding a link back to the article for archival purposes are, while seemingly trivial, not to be overlooked, and they greatly help when I'm trying to clear the 16,414-article backlog. I do appreciate all the work you've done with the Simpsons characters—I think that you do a much better job at selective paste merging than me, since I'm more suited to maintenance tasks like copying and pasting, and fixing templates, rather than any sort of creative writing—and because of your experience, that you have a better grasp at the content than I do, and that I should give you a friendly reminder. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 18:23, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, of the three things you mentioned, all were done, and those articles do not appear in the backlog. Your TP note was unnecessary. Please heed Fr33k's suggestion to stop second-guessing my edits. Also, keep in mind that I have been editing this article for two years and almost 5,000 edits Purplebackpack89 18:27, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, look, honestly, I've been trying to tell you, in the politest manner that I could think of, and from a fellow editor's point of view, not from anyone with a grudge or bad experience, maybe you should consider doing these three things instead of having me do them. I'm not trying to "second-guess" your edits or anything, please don't continue with "I have two years on this article" or whatever, it was just a reminder, and leave it at that, okay? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 19:00, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ouch! You've used a template to send a message to an experienced editor. Please review the essay Wikipedia:Don't template the regulars or maybe listen to a little advice. Doesn't this feel cold, impersonal, and canned? It's meant in good humour. Best wishes. User:Purplebackpack89 (talk) 01:23, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know why you consider making talk page redirects hounding (I suggest you re-read the content of that page), but it is clearly not hounding by any stretch of the imagination. Redirecting talk pages is both common and good practice. If you're under a lot of stress, please take a few moments to take a deep breathe and stay calm. Accusations of hounding on such shoddy grounds and trivial matters can be seen as a violation of WP:CIVIL and other behavioural guidelines such as WP:AGF.

Regards. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 03:38, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Headbomb, you need to look at the edit in the broader context of Tele's interaction with me. I've sent you an e-mail about it. Talk page redirection is not always good policy...you need to save the talk page for discussion of the redirect. Also, he makes those type of edits almost exclusively on pages I've edited Purplebackpack89 03:49, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Take a step back and realize what you're complaining about: an editor making redirects. That alone should give you some perspective on how ridiculous the whole kerfuffle is. If dude/dudette X wants to redirect the talk page, let him/her, there's no harm in having them, and in most cases this will be beneficial. If you just don't like to see the edits pop in your watch list, unwatch the redirect after making it. I'll read your email soon, but I'll doubt it'll contain anything that will turn creating redirects into reprehensible behaviour. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 04:17, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't be so sure, Headbomb. I don't say those things without a reason, and I have a pretty good reason. Purplebackpack89 04:26, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

[edit]

Are you up for some free advice? Do not react to any edit that Tele makes WHATSOEVER! If he reverts or comments on something you have acted/interacted on, record it and ignore it. Make a note of all of the objectionable edits and report it to an admin (admins). Feel free to ask an admin to contact me. BUT!, ... do NOT get involved in any conversation with or reversion of Tele AT ALL. And I mean NO MATTER WHAT. Report it! fr33kman -simpleWP- 05:26, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Buster Baxter

[edit]

I just wanted to give you a notice that I have redirected the Buster Baxter article to the Arthur Characters page. It has been well over a week since my RD was undone - I gave it some time under the impression that the article would be improved or edited to meet compliance with Wikipedia's policies. The main issue that is keeping the Buster from getting his own article is the lack of credible sources to establish notability and a lack of critical commentary. These terms are covered in Wikipedia:Notability. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at your convenience. --  StarScream1007  ►Talk  21:41, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm undoing you again. Since you're the one with the notability concerns, maybe you should try and find some sources, instead of badgering me to find them (WP:SOFIXIT). I want you to set this out in an AFD, which people actually bother to read it. Nobody ever responds to merge requests and you know it. Also, whenever you merge something, I get a lot of bot messages about the images, so you just make more work for me that way Purplebackpack89 00:11, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You cannot make chicken soup with just feathers - there are not that many sources for Buster Baxter on Google that can be used to write an encyclopedic article. Without trying to sound like a jerk - neither any either nor myself possess any obligation to improve an article an article on Wikipedia. I am not 'badgering' you to improve the article; I was rather making you aware of my issues with the viability of the article. I have posted a memo on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television , if there is not a response or actions taken - then we can go to AFD. --  StarScream1007  ►Talk  04:05, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Jewish atheists

[edit]

Hi. There are people in the category who have no exact explanation in their articles as to whether they are "ethnically" Jewish. There are black Jews, too, and are they of "Jewish descent"? Do they cease to do so when they become atheists? Difficult to say. I'll keep that statement like it is since while the statement might be amiguous it's better than an overstatement. Regards Hekerui (talk) 19:03, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do they cease to have a Jewish descent if they convent to atheism, or any other faith? Of course not! If your parents are Jewish, and you become Catholic, you still have Judaism in your background. With regard to the black Jewish question, I doubt that there are many, if any, articles on Black Jewish atheists (and note that there is a type of Jewish ethnicity from North Africa) Purplebackpack89 19:48, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Top importance biographies (California)

[edit]

Hello,

Would you ind if I corrected a few of the typos in the list you posted, because they show as red links? This is an interesting question, but the main purpose of these ratings, as I understand it, is to help identify which articles (eg: top importance but lower quality) need immediate attention by this project. These ratings are subjective and only a tool for active editors. I am pondering which bios should be added to the three now so listed. Cullen328 (talk) 16:38, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Go ahead. It shouldn't be too hard to bluelink 'em, though you may need accents Purplebackpack89 17:09, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) leads at the time of writing with 1180 points, immediately followed by Hungary Sasata (submissions) with 1175 points. "You can't be an atheist while practicing Judaism"

[edit]

You felt so strongly about this assertion that you made it bold and added "full stop". A personal story: When my wife and I moved to the Napa Valley about 18 years ago, we wanted to join the local synagogue. She is born Jewish and deaf, and I was an atheist who had been born Catholic. Due to my wife's deafness, I had to discuss things on the phone with a guy from the membership committee. When I explained we were an intermarried couple (unacceptable among Orthodox Jews), he laughed and said, "That's OK, I'm an atheist." All these years later, he's still at the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, I've converted to Judaism and served as synagogue president without adopting traditional theism, and Jewish atheists abound. Read about the teachings of Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan, and perhaps you may begin to understand. And also be aware that all denominations of Judaism place the highest priority on overt behavior, which is objective, than on internal faith, which is a mental state that people can lie about if they wish. Cullen328 (talk) 05:37, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I understand where you're coming from, kinda. The problem is that that is a very "in-universe" perspective...on the face of it, most people would find the term "RELIGION atheist" contradictory or confusing, because they haven't read Kaplan. It may make sense to the few in the know, but it's not very good for navigational utility. I'm guessing after this, I sound like the world's biggest dick, so my apologies Purplebackpack89
I certainly don't think you're a "dick" but rather a well-meaning young guy who knows very little about Jewish thinking and identity. My guess is that you think of Judaism as a kind of Christianity without Jesus. I spent 13 years in fairly serious study of Judaism before deciding to convert. It was only when I understood how profoundly differerent Jewish thinking on God really is that I was prepared to call myself Jewish without accepting the all powerful guy in the sky with the voice of Charlton Heston. Cullen328 (talk) 06:08, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think Jewish is an admirable religion, because of its question. Yeah, I'm not Jewish, and yeah, I did assume that Judaism required a belief in something at the end of the day. Heston was Moses, DeMille was God. Maybe we stop worrying about this and analyze the WPCali mess some more Purplebackpack89 06:12, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't "in universe" a term derived from the imaginary worlds of science fiction? More than skeptical Jews practice non-theistic religious behavior. So do Buddhists and indigenous religions worldwide. Theism is not the same as religion. Cullen328 (talk) 06:19, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are right about the movie, and I've made my point. Back to California history. Cullen328 (talk) 06:23, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, back to something I'm more familiar with...so, Cesar Chavez top-priority for the project? Noticed you fixed the redlinks Purplebackpack89 06:27, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cesar Chavez? Absolutely. Others I would suggest: Leland Stanford, John Sutter, Earl Warren, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, John Steinbeck, Jack London, Huey Newton, Angela Davis, Ishii, Robert Mondavi, Ernest & Julio Gallo, Alice Waters, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jim Jones, Charles Manson, Howard Jarvis. More to come. Cullen328 (talk) 05:45, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the top importance bios should be of people who are central to our conception of what California is all about. In my mind, that rules out most famous athletes, entertainers and movie stars, who by definition operate on a worldwide stage. I was thinking of Charlie Chaplin, who I think is the central figure in the dominance of California moviemaking, even though he was a Brit who left the US in disgust at McCarthyism. Cullen328 (talk) 05:54, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Other possibilities, though I wish I could think of more women: Harry Bridges, Mariano Vallejo, William Mulholland, Samuel Brannan, Samuel Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer, Jack Warner, Howard Hughes, Linus Pauling, William Randolph Heartst, Mario Savio, William Shockley, Bill Hewlett, Dave Packard, Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce, Andy Grove, Johnny Carson. Cullen328 (talk) 07:13, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bill Graham, Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana, Jim Morrison, Theodore Judah, Collis Huntington, Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, A.P. Gianinni. I agree with Leland Stanford. Cullen328 (talk) 07:18, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) This should go on the Cali projecttalk page, or the Cali assessment talkpage. Jobs is a good one because of his work in the Silicon Valley. Steinbeck, Chavez, and Stanford definetely should be up there. Most of the others are more high-priority. Purplebackpack89 07:21, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Civility

[edit]
FYI

Dear Killiondude, Hi Ya! I only asked about The Purple's schooling in case he attended in another state or country and perhaps could be excused for his lack of knowledge. The Beach Boys are icons and should be mentioned, which I did not. Steinbeck is a given. The Purple said this about Cesar: "Chavez because a state that has 8-10 million Mexicans should probably have a biography up there." As a Mexican-American, I found that racist and insulting but was polite about it. I had no intention of causing any divisiveness, but you may want to know that Purple was taken to Ani for insulting me before, as he has again on my talk page. I was very careful only to repeat his own words back to him. If you double check, you will see at no time did I "attack and/or lie." Yes, I speak plainly, but like Jack Nicholson said. "..some people just can't *Handle* the truth!" LOL! K'Dude you did an excellent job in assessing the situation and I look forward to working with you. Namaste!...DocOfSoc (talk) 11:48, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

And you go around calling me a twit on other user's talk pages? That's definitely a personal attack. Hi, perhaps you would like to reconsider less use of nationalistic comments when discussing Wikipedia content and its editors. Do remember that the Wikipdia is a truly international project and many editors are concerned with maintaining its neutral policy. Thanks.--Kudpung (talk) 22:25, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have violated no policy in these discussion. If you're suggesting I don't take a global perspective, consider that the support opinions I have cast; many of the oppose policies have not; and also that most WP users live outside the Commonwelth Purplebackpack89 01:51, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What Commonwealth are you talking about? I certainly agree that most English language speakers live outside the USA - it's a linguistic statistic. On policy violations, perhaps you might like to familiarise yourself with: WP:POINTY, WP:GAME, and WP:CIVIL, and there is also the one somewhere about deliberate misuse of warning templates. In my opinion, a better knowledge. of policies helps foster a more friendly environment, and leads to improved collaboration. --Kudpung (talk) 00:05, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Commonwealth? You know, the one with the UK, Canada, Australia, India, etc. I believe Jeni to have exhibited POV violation, which she clearly has, and instead of agree with me, you accuse me of POV. Why are you operate on the assumption that Dough, Floyd and myself are all operating under one big ruse? WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

[edit]

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Category:American Quaker clergy

[edit]

I've so far managed to find a few Brits and Canadians, so I don't see why those categories couldn't be created as well. However as you have pointed out, former training isn't nessisary to be a minister in Quakerism, so it is quite dicey to pick out who should be called "clergy". Maybe that's where we should start and then decide if we need national sub-cats.--Kevlar (talkcontribs) 19:13, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of List of Conan sketches for deletion

[edit]

The article List of Conan sketches is being discussed concerning whether it is suitable for inclusion as an article according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

AfD WP:CRUFT, WP:SOURCE, WP:TRIVIA, etc. It's a pretty arbitrary and trivial list. —Justin (koavf)TCM19:07, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So are any other number of lists on TV shows...why this one? Why not any others? Purplebackpack89 19:42, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure See WP:OTHERSTUFF--the simple fact that other unacceptable articles exist is no rationale for this one existing. I've nominated several such articles for deletion before (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chronological list of Star Trek stories (2201-TMP), Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of villains and monsters in Powerpuff Girls Z, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Mad's TV shows spoofs, and the very similar Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Short-lived recurring characters on Saturday Night Live); I just nominate them as I see them. —Justin (koavf)TCM19:48, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
